Chapter 8: Save... Me...?

Lyra was gasping for air since the pressure was making it difficult for her chest to heave. The proud and untouchable Ice Empress of the Aetheria Grand Academy was pinned to the stone path with such force that she fell on the ground while facing her back to the sky.

"Ugh... Ah..." A low sound escaped Lyra’s throat.

She tried to lift her hands to cast another spell, to manifest even a fraction of her power, or whatever that could hurt the monster, but the moment her fingers moved, the pressure on her intensified so much that I could hear her joints dislocating.

Crack.

A cracking sound could be heard from her shoulders. She wasn’t just being subdued; she was being crushed by a presence that didn’t even recognize her as a threat.

Meanwhile she was struggling, my eyes were locked on the monster girl who was taking one step at a time toward me.

Tap.

Her bare foot took another step forward.

She was short and looked almost delicate in her white clothes. But the contrast between her innocent appearance and the two curved black horns cutting through her hair was striking.

And then there was the blindfold. It was a thick piece of black fabric wrapped around her head to hide whatever lay beneath.

This was the entity known only as ’The Cataclysm.’ Which, in dungeon novels’ words mean the one and only SSS-CLASS Monster.

She was a sleeping disaster. The author had written her into the background of the academy as a hidden bomb, until the ’Hero’ accidentally stumbled into the Sunken Garden during the second year of the apocalypse.

By then, Kaelen was strong enough to fight a desperate battle and slay her to claim her monster core. That victory had propelled him to become the strongest in the world.

But that was a year from now. Right now, she wasn’t supposed to be awake. She wasn’t supposed to be moving.

And she certainly wasn’t supposed to be walking toward me.

Tap. Tap.

The distance between us didn’t vanish in a matter of seconds. It took more than that since she was walking really slowly. The monster girl stopped exactly three inches away from where I sat slumped against the support.

Then... She... didn’t move for a long time, until, slowly, she tilted her head down.

Even with the blindfold blocking her sight, I could feel her gaze scanning my face. Gradually, her face got so closer to mine that I could feel the stray strands of her hair touching my forehead.

Sniff.

’She... She is smelling me?’

My heart was beating so violently against my chest. This was the moment that would decide if I would have a future or not.

But looking at it, I think I have successfully played my part perfectly.

If I had approached her with malice, she would have erased me. If I had approached her with fear, she would have consumed me.

But I hadn’t come here with fear. I had come here with a desperate desire to survive. I had thrown the Hero to the enemy and dragged the Ice Empress into a trap just to stand in front of this very monster.

"Ah..."

A sound left her slightly parted lips.

Slowly, she lifted her slender hand, then with her fingers, that were so delicate and tipped with black nails, she reached out to me.

Lyra watched from the ground while the monster girl was reaching out to me. She might have wanted me to meet my gruesome end. And honestly, that was what I had also thought could happen.

But, instead of grabbing my neck and choking me to death, the monster girl’s cold fingers gently brushed against my right cheek.

I couldn’t help but flinch at her touch.

She didn’t go for my neck. She was just moving her thumb across my face and traced my broken jaw right where the frost from Lyra’s magic was.

"Ah..." she whispered again.

Her head tilted further to the side as she moved her face closer to mine until I was able to feel her breath on my lips. She wasn’t attacking. Her touch was almost... curious. No, it was more than that. It was possessive.

My hands, which had been shaking slightly from the adrenaline and pain, suddenly went steady.

"Cian..."

This time she didn’t say anything random, but instead she said my name in this world. And, that alone raised a big question... How does she know my name? Did she know me from before?

I was only going to come near her slowly. Because she only attacked someone if they had ill intentions toward her, I tried not to have fear or any malice, but this was unexpected.

She somehow already knows the real Cian?

"You... smell like... the dark."

I leaned my head slightly into her cold palm and a faint smile spread across my lips.

"Dark...? Maybe that is an understatement. I wouldn’t say it only that but, a void... Yes... A Void."

I don’t know what I was saying. But given the situation, I think if I wanted to gain her full support, I had to take whatever chances I had on hand.

"Hmmm..."

The girl let out a pleased hum. The pressure that was on the garden suddenly rolled off my shoulders, leaving me perfectly free to breathe, while it remained heavy on the rest of the area.

"What took... you so..."

She gradually let out one word at a time.

"Long to... come and..."

Before finishing her sentence she paused for a brief moment.

"Save... Me...?"
