Chapter 60: You’re My Mummy
Arianna was pleased with the position that Logan would be handing back to her.
It gave her even better leverage over him. Once she got the property papers, she would slowly turn the employees against him and kick him out of the company.
As long as there are no obstacles in her way, she will be able to achieve her goals in a few months.
But first things first, the property papers.
Arianna glanced at what used to be their bedroom. There was a safe there. They both shared it to keep important and confidential items safe.
There was a good chance that the papers would be there.
All she needed to do was get there, input the pin and retrieve it.
Thinking about her plans sent adrenaline coursing through her veins.
Vivian was about to say something, but a guest caught her off guard.
It was Mrs. Paenter, a friend of her parents. She had white hair cut into a short bob. On her neck were jewels that could cost an arm and a leg, while a solid red lipstick stained her lips.
"Vivian, dear, congratulations on your wedding. I’ve been quite busy with work, so I didn’t congratulate you in time. How are you feeling?" Then she paused, feeling the gaze of the other people on her. She recognized Arianna and gasped. "You’re Logan’s wife, right?"
"Ex-wife, aunty," Vivian quickly corrected. "She’s his ex-wife."
Mrs. Paenter slapped her forehead. "Where are my manners? I completely forgot that they’re both divorced."
Arianna shivered before walking away.
She didn’t need to stand there and listen to them talking about who is her ex husband and who isn’t.
Mikael followed Arianna everywhere, patiently waiting for the moment she would speak to him, but the whole time, she completely ignored his existence.
"I have to use the restroom. Don’t follow me there. I’ll be right back."
Mikael parted his lips to speak, but Arianna had already left him standing alone.
Arianna’s heart raced as she climbed the stairs, heading to the room where she was going to start searching for the papers.
She glanced at her back, making sure that no one was following her.
There were barely any guests to see upstairs since the party was being held downstairs, which was a good thing for her.
The fewer people around, the smoother her mission would be.
Her hand wrapped around the knob of the door, making a quick check to see if anyone was close by before she opened it, stepped in, and shut it with a soft click.
Arianna frowned slightly when she saw that the room had been changed. The furniture and the wall paintings had all been changed.
She didn’t linger to start wondering before she moved to the safe that was secured in their closet.
Knowing Logan, he would start searching for her. Or Vivian, or worse, Mikael, which would completely blow her cover.
If she were caught, she would be accused of theft.
After rummaging through the clothes, Arianna finally found the safe that was buried in the midst of more clothes.
She shoved them away, not caring if they returned and noticed something was off. There was no time to arrange them and put them back where she found them.
Her fingers moved on, inputting the PIN.
When she and Logan had gotten the safe, they’d both decided to make their wedding date, including the year, the pin.
Hopefully, he hasn’t changed it.
Arianna took a breath in, hoping it would unlock.
She inputted the PIN, and the soft click echoed in the room.
She released the breath she’d been holding in, her shoulders dropping in relief.
Inside the safe were expensive jewelry items, most of which she didn’t recognize. On the day she’d left the mansion, she’d completely forgotten to take everything that belonged to her from the safe. And now, what she found inside didn’t belong to her.
It didn’t take her two guesses to know it all belonged to Vivian.
Arianna ignored them and started searching through the pile of documents inside.
She flipped the papers open, read the headline, frowned deeply, flipped it close before dumping them back into the safe.
She continued searching since time was starting to run out.
She’d already instructed Mikael to wait for her and not follow her in, but knowing him, he would start searching for her soon.
After searching through the piles of documents and still not finding what she was searching for, Arianna almost panicked.
Her fist clenched as her heart thumped hard against her chest.
If the property documents weren’t there, where could they be?
Now, it was either the papers were in his study or at the company office.
"Fuck!" Arianna cursed, staring at the mess she’d just caused.
The clothes were ruffled now, but the documents were still intact. She’d made sure to place them where she’d seen them.
She couldn’t afford to make too much of a mess even though she already did.
"Mummy..."
Arianna stiffened when she heard that familiar voice.
"Fuck!" She cursed once again, and she slowly turned to face Clara.
With a stuffed teddy bear clutched close to her chest, Clara stared at Arianna with tear-filled eyes.
"It’s really you, mummy!"
Before Arianna could say a word, Clara closed the distance between them and wrapped her arms around Arianna’s waist.
Arianna was stunned for a second as she tried to maintain her cold demeanor.
After all, this was the child she’d raised for years, only for Clara to turn her back on her when Logan revealed he was her biological father, and not her adoptive one.
"I missed you so much, mummy. Where have you been?" She raised her head to look at Arianna with tears in her eyes. "I was asking mum about you, but she always ignored me. I’m so glad to see that you’re here. Please stay with me. Please, come back. I missed you so much."
Arianna gripped the girl’s hands that were still wrapped around her waist.
Clara’s eyes shone with hope, thinking Arianna was about to comfort her, to ask her why she was crying. Pet her and hold her closer.
But that hope died the moment Arianna opened her lips to talk. "I’m not your mother," she said coldly as Clara’s knees went weak.
Not once has Arianna ever spoken so coldly to her. So, hearing her extremely devoid tone ripped off emotions made her wonder if a demon had possessed her mummy.
"Mummy?"
"Stop calling me that!" Arianna snapped.
She regretted that move immediately when she saw tears welling in Clara’s eyes, but she tried to ignore the way her heart panged against her chest in pain.
"You wanted me to leave so you could spend time with your real mum and dad, didn’t you? What suddenly changed your mind?"
Clara’s lips quivered as she tried to think of an excuse.
She loved her real parents. When they’d told her the truth, she’d thrown away the woman who had raised her all her life, only for her biological mother to treat her however she wanted, especially when she was in a bad mood.
Over the past week, whenever she moved closer to Vivian, wanting to spend some quality time together, the woman would push her away or even go as far as slapping her in the face.
She’d cried, pleaded. But things didn’t get better. If anything, the situation had gotten worse.
She had some hidden scars under her dress that no one knew about. She contemplated telling her father about the mistreatment that her mother had been giving her, but she feared things would end between them.
All her life, she’d thought she was adopted. Now that she had both her parents by her side, she feared she would be the reason for their separation, which was the last thing she wanted.
Arianna was her only hope.
"I’m sorry about the things that I said. I didn’t mean any of them." The little girl cried even harder, tears streaming down her face. She tried reaching for Arianna once more, but the latter took a step back.
She loved Clara, but after the things she’d spouted that night, it was better she completely ignored her existence.
Whatever the problem was, it was better for the little girl to inform her biological parents, since she wasn’t one.
"It’s too late for that, Clara. The only people you need are your parents. That was what you said to me that day, so I suggest you don’t come at me like that again. It’s rude to jump into the hands of strangers."
Clara’s jaw dropped as she frantically shook her head. She parted her lips to speak, but Arianna didn’t stay to hear the words she would spill out.
Once she reached outside, she heaved a sigh of relief, not because she was able to control her emotions in Clara’s presence, but because the little girl didn’t find her searching through her parent’s closets.
She could only hope she doesn’t inform her parents.
