Chapter 58: You Love Me
Arianna stepped downstairs for dinner after her call with Logan. She was pleased after finding out that he would be holding a party at his home, which would give her leverage over him.
Her only worries were that she found what she was looking for at his home.
Arianna found Josephine helping the servants arrange the food on the table.
Despite being from a wealthy family, their parents had taught them to always be humble to the servants and their workers, because they were part of the people that made their lives easier. And most importantly, being humble goes a long way.
"Thanks for the food nanny," Josephine said to the woman who gave her a nod.
The woman was in her early seventies, red hair with a few freckles kissing her face here and there. She’d been there when their mother was born and raised her, and now, she was raising her madam’s children.
"If you need anything else, let me know," she said.
Josephine gave her a nod before she turned to Arianna.
"Good thing you’re here. Dinner is ready."
Arianna took a seat and stared at the food on the table with hunger filling her eyes.
Quickly, Arianna starts to dish some food for herself.
When she was done, she stared at her plate, recalling Daemon asking her to eat more. Her health had been declining in one way or the other. Even if she didn’t want to, she picked a few extra foods and placed them on her plate.
’I’m not doing this for him. I’m doing it for myself,’ she thought.
But when she looked up at Josephine, she found her sister deep in thought.
"What’s wrong? Is everything okay back at home?"
Jospehine took a moment before she responded.
"It’s getting worse, and father wants me to come back to help."
Arianna’s spoon paused mid air with her mouth hanging open.
"According to Cassian, Sanchez deployed some of his men at our base and now, they’re attacking our men. A few of them have already lost their lives."
Arianna couldn’t believe her ears.
She’d called her father that morning and he’d told her everything was fine, but it clearly wasn’t.
"I need to go back to help them."
"We both should. I’ll back my bags immediately after dinner so we can go back home tonight or early tomorrow morning."
Josephine shook her head. "You stay in Las Vegas and handle Logan and Vivian. In as much as I don’t trust Daemon, I want to believe that he can keep you safe when you’re here."
Arianna frowned deeply, clearly offended by her sister’s words.
She was talking about her as if she was some fragile porcelain doll.
"I am not weak," she deadpanned.
"You’re not," Josephine agreed. "But the situation back home is not safe for you. Sanchez doesn’t know about you yet, so it’s best you stay here and focus on your revenge on Logan and Vivian."
"While our family fights a deadly war? I don’t think so sis."
Josephine released a breath, her shoulders dropping.
Even before she’d started to speak, she knew that Arianna wouldn’t agree to her plan.
"Father told me not to tell you this because he doesn’t want you to worry. After everything you’ve been through in Logan’s hands, the last thing he wants is your life being at stake again. The last time it happened, we were far away. If it hadn’t been for Daemon, we would probably be searching for your body by now. I understand that you want to help, but you’re only going to make us worry more if you do it because of your health."
Arianna parted her lips to speak but she immediately stopped herself.
What Logan and Vivian had done to her was tragic, and she wouldn’t want to relive that moment ever again. Unless the roles were reversed, then sure.
Even so, Arianna couldn’t bring herself to let her family face such a problem without her. But she had to understand them.
"Alright, I’ll stay here."
Josephine released a sigh of relief.
"Good. I know you’re going to miss me so much but don’t worry, I brought someone who will be keeping you safe while I’m away."
"Who?" Arianna asked curiously.
Josephine parted her lips to speak but someone suddenly walked in, his footsteps echoing in the empty house.
"Oh look, he’s here."
Arianna turned her head to find the person she’d not seen in several years staring back at her with the kind of smile that sent a shiver down her spine.
It was Mikael, her oldest crushes from years ago, before she’d left her family to come to Las Vegas.
"Look at you now," Mikael started, giving her a quick once over. "You look good."
Arianna wanted to say something but her breath caught.
Arianna gave Josphine a look, wondering if it was really Mikael that she’d brought to be her bodyguard.
"Aren’t you going to say anything?" Josephine asked.
Arianna still couldn’t say anything.
"Come join us for dinner. I’m sure Arianna is too stunned to see you here."
Mikael gave Arianna a glance before he drew out the closest chair to her and sat down.
Arianna stiffened when she smelt his cologne. It’s been years since she’d seen him and he looks older now.
Despite being ten years older than her, nearly pushing his forties, Mikael still looked good.
About ten years ago, when she was seventeen, she had a crush on him. She was still a minor and he was in his late twenties. The age difference was certainly a red flag but she’d ignored it and professed her feelings for him.
Mikael worked for her father. He was one of their best trained soldiers and the oldest too. He’d worked by her father’s side for over a decade, fought battles alongside him which earned him her father’s trust.
So, having a thing with his boss’s daughter, especially the youngest one, definitely wasn’t part of his plans since he wanted to live for a long time.
But Arianna didn’t give up when they finally had something together.
She thought she’d seen the love of her live and the relationship was going to last, until Mikael started to want to control her and order her around just because he was older.
They kept their relationship a secret, so no one, not even Josephine who was staring at Arianna with questions in her gaze was aware about their relationship.
It was a few months later she’d realized that whatever she had with Mikael was completely wrong.
Arianna tried to breathe while Josephine and Mikael conversed.
Even though she ignored them and focused on her good, she could still hear Mikael calling her name once in a while, trying to get her attention but she completely ignored him like he didn’t exist.
Immediately after eating, Arianna went to her bedroom to rest for the night before the party at Logan’s home the next day. She still needed to orchestrate how she was going to start her search, which room she needed to go to first and which one she needed to enter last.
While thinking, she suddenly heard a knock on the door.
Thinking it was Josie, she opened the door without thinking, only to find Mikael standing in his glory. 6’3 with a body packed with so much muscle that some of it stayed glued to his suit. He had the kind of face that would definitely attract a woman, maybe even men if interested.
"You’re married to Daemon Langford," he stated, as if it wasn’t already an information she was aware about.
"I am?" Her reply came out more sarcastically than she’d intended it to be, and it only made him narrow his gaze at her.
"You know that the Langford and the Wesley family can’t have a tie together, and—"
"Look," she cut him off abruptly, making him shut his mouth for a second as he blinked at her in confusion. "I’m just going to assume that you’re watching out for my family and our household and that’s why you’re worried about my marriage with Daemon. But I need to let you know that my father is completely fine with the union that I have with Daemon, so there’s nothing for you to be worried about at all."
Mikael wasn’t having it.
He took a step forward, forcing Arianna to take one back as he entered the room.
"You got married to Daemon," he said through gritted teeth this time around, as if his nerves couldn’t digest that information. "You have to divorce him and get back to me. You left without saying a word to me years ago, and I found out that you’re married? You told me you loved me."
"What we had was a mistake," she corrected. "I was young and naive and I thought I loved you."
Before Arianna could say anything else, Mikael closed the distance between them and had his fingers around his chin, pinching the skin tightly.
"You love me," he deadpanned.
