Chapter 53: A Visit
"To think there are people scared of him..."
Daemon ignored what Frederick said and ran off.
Outside, he saw Arianna being held off by his soldiers with their guns pointed at her as if she was a threat.
She wore a lazy expression, as if tired and too exhausted to even deal with them.
Daemon’s expression instantly darkened.
"What are you trying to do?!" He barked.
"Boss, you didn’t give us any early permit to let her inside—"
"And so what? She’s my wife and you dare to point your guns at her?" There was something low and threatening in his tone.
It was more than enough for them to realize that they’d fucked up real bad.
Without being told, they quickly lowered their weapons.
"I’ll deal with you later," he promised. Their knees buckled. Nothing good came from being punished by Daemon. They’ll only return back to their positions the next day bruised up.
His gaze landed on Arianna.
He parted his lips to speak but she beat him to it.
"I came to apologize for leaving you that night like that," she said. "You saved my life and I should have thanked you for that. I’m sorry."
Daemon’s mind went back to the night that she’d been rescued. Indeed he was hurt by what she’d said but he’d completely forgotten about it after the day passed.
He understood where she was coming from. It was obvious she still didn’t trust him, and that wasn’t something that she was going to force her to do if she wasn’t comfortable doing.
The last time he’d brought her home, she’d shown her discomfort without any hesitation and that had been his fault.
All he wanted was for her to stay close to him.
At first, he’d wanted her to live with him because he just needed her close, but after what had happened with Levi, he couldn’t trust that the fool wouldn’t try that act again, especially when she was walking around without bodyguards.
Levi also wasn’t the only threat around them. Logan and Vivian were as well. After finding out that she was alive, they’d sent someone to stab her to death.
The stab wound he’d taken for her had long healed but left a scar behind, and each time he looked at it, he smiled proudly, because he knew he would be willing to take more stab wounds just for her.
"It’s completely fine. Wanna come in?" He asked, nervous.
His men glanced at each other, wondering if they were seeing the same thing.
Their boss, the same one who wouldn’t blink an eyelash before skinning an enemy alive. The one who would slowly cut out their private parts just to make them scream in pain before leaving them to bleed to death.
The very same one was standing before them, scared to talk to a woman.
They blinked several times, hoping it was their boss and not some clone.
Arianna debated Daemon’s question. If she was going in, then that meant she was comfortable with him. And if she didn’t...
She sighed, trying to calm her mind down.
"Sure," she replied flatly.
Daemon resisted the urge to jump in happiness when he heard her answer.
He was about to say something when he saw his men looking at him.
He cocked an eyebrow at them. "Do you need something?" He questioned, his voice cold and empty, sending chills down their spine. The tone was completely different from the one he used to talk to the woman next to him.
"Not at all, boss!" They replied in sync.
"Then get back to your positions!" He snapped.
Without wasting even half a second, they dispersed, leaving nothing but their shadows behind.
Daemon turned to Arianna, his hand gesturing into the house.
She sighed one more time before she followed him in.
Inside, she found Frederick, Daemon’s younger brother munching a bucket of popcorn while being deeply engrossed in the television.
When he felt her presence, he turned to look at her with a subtle smile coupled with a curt nod which she returned.
Daemon glared at his brother but Frederick didn’t pay any attention to him.
"Go upstairs!" He snapped.
Frederick turned to him. "Wait, why?"
He glanced between his brother and his wife, then his face sulked.
"The movie was just starting to get good," he mumbled under his breath and he carried his bucket of popcorn and left the living room.
Arianna couldn’t help but smile at the brotherly interaction.
Despite being one of the most feared men in the underworld, Daemon still shared a good and healthy relationship with his brother.
Arianna quickly stopped herself when she realized what she was doing. She was taking notes of the way he spoke to the people in his life.
Since when?
It was none of her business.
"Do you want anything to drink or snacks?"
She quickly shook her head. "I won’t be staying long."
Faster than light, she saw something pass through his face before they completely disappeared as if they weren’t there. She’d seen that thing before.
It was the same expression he had when she’d told him she wasn’t coming to his house with him on the day she was kidnapped.
He looked hurt. But why? She had no idea.
"I only came to apologize for what I’d said to you," she added.
He didn’t respond, and only blinked at her.
"But since I’m here, we might as well discuss what’s happening between my father and Sanchez. Do you know anything about their past? Rumor has it that your father, my father and Sanchez were quite close years ago but suddenly separated from each other because of an incident that happened. I’ve asked my father several times about what really happened and he has refused to talk. So, did your father tell you anything useful?"
Daemon stared at Arianna for a good three seconds before he parted his lips to speak.
"I don’t know much, just the same thing you know. But whatever it is that happened between them, Sanchez is definitely out for revenge and he won’t stop whatever he’s doing until he gets it. I’ve already contacted Cassian in case they need more men deployed. I’m willing to send a few of my soldiers over there." Then he combed his hair with his fingers, sighing. "But that fool hung up on me."
Arianna narrowed her eyes on him.
"You want to send more men to us?"
"Why not? I don’t know Sanchez personally, but if he can make other underworld bosses cut their ties with your father with just a single threat, it won’t take anything to convince your father’s soldiers to betray him."
Arianna’s heart dropped to her stomach. She hadn’t even thought about that. For all they know, there was probably a mole leaking out their information to Sanchez.
No wonder he was able to find their warehouses and burn every single thing down to the ground.
One of them had already betrayed her father.
She quickly made a mental note to inform Cassian about this as soon as possible.
Daemon might be offering too much, but they need as much help as possible to defeat Sanchez.
Not sure of what to say next, she took a step back, ready to leave but paused when a question popped in her head.
She looked up at him and found him looking at her already. He was always doing that, and every single time, her heart fell into her stomach.
His eyes were always on her, making her wonder just how long he’s been watching her. Months? Years?
She shook the thought away from her head.
"Who’s Levi Sokolov?" She questioned.
Daemon stiffened like a statue.
Knowing Arianna, he’d been expecting her to ask such questions regarding Levi anytime soon but he wasn’t prepared to answer her questions.
"He’s no one," he replied begrudgingly.
Arianna narrowed her eyes suspiciously at him. "I don’t think so. News flash, I got kidnapped by this man and nearly got raped by his men and you tell me he’s no one?" She questioned, furious now. "It’s obvious you two have a history together, and trust me when I say I don’t want to be stuck between you two. We’re married now, and even though it’s not a real marriage, the threats are real. Your enemies are going to use me to get to you so you better fix whatever issue you have with Levi Sokolov. I don’t want to be caught in the cross fire between you two."
Then she turned to leave.
Daemon called out to her but she never responded or even halted.
He sighed. The one time she came to his house willingly, he had to say something stupid and ruin it again.
Who knows when next he will be able to see her again.
Frederick snuck out from the stairs he’d been hiding in, his bucket of popcorns still in his hands as he turned to the couch.
"She’s not wrong. You have to fix things with Levi else, more lives will be at stake."
