Chapter 421: Chapter 421: Kai Got Hurt
The wound was already healing, the supernatural biology of his wolf form working to close the injury, but slowly. The fact that it wasn’t healing faster meant it was deeper than normal, meant it had been inflicted by something supernatural with enough power to slow his natural healing.
"What happened?" Maya demanded, moving to his side immediately.
"Rogue wolf," Kai said, his voice carrying the strain of pain he was clearly trying to hide. "From the southern territories. Didn’t realize it was pack land, got territorial, things escalated."
"You could have been killed," Maya said, the words coming out more sharply than she intended.
"But I wasn’t," Kai said, trying to sound reassuring and mostly failing. "I’m fine. Just need time to heal."
Maya looked at the gash...still open, still bleeding slightly, still angry and inflamed despite his body’s attempts at healing. He wasn’t fine. He was hurt and trying to hide it, trying to be the strong wolf who didn’t need anyone’s help.
"You’re staying in the medical wing tonight," Maya said, already moving to help him lie back on the healing bed.
"I’d rather...." Kai started.
"I don’t care what you’d rather," Maya said firmly. "You’re injured, you need proper care, and you’re going to stay here and let your body heal."
For a moment, she thought he was going to argue. But then something shifted in his expression, and he seemed to accept that fighting her on this wasn’t worth the effort.
"Okay," he said quietly. "But you’re staying with me."
"Of course I’m staying with you," Maya said, already pulling a chair close to the healing bed.
The medical team came to check on him periodically throughout the evening...checking the wound’s healing progress, making sure there was no infection, administering healing salves that smelled faintly of herbs and magic.
By the time full night had fallen, most of the medical staff had retired, leaving Maya and Kai alone in the quiet treatment room.
The wound had closed slightly, but not completely. It was still raw, still tender, still causing him obvious discomfort despite his attempts to hide it.
"Come here," Maya said softly, noticing the way Kai was trying not to move, trying to minimize the pain.
"I’m fine lying here," Kai said.
"I didn’t ask if you were fine," Maya said gently. "I asked you to come here."
Kai shifted carefully, moving to the side of the bed so Maya could lie beside him. She settled carefully, making sure not to jostle him or put any pressure on his injured side.
"I can feel how much pain you’re in," Maya said quietly. "Through the bond. You don’t have to hide it from me."
Kai was silent for a long moment. "I don’t like being vulnerable. Don’t like being hurt, being weak, being anything less than completely capable."
"I know," Maya said. "But you’re allowed to be hurt sometimes. You’re allowed to need help. That doesn’t make you weak. It just makes you human."
"I’m not human," Kai said, a hint of dark humor in his voice.
"No," Maya agreed. "You’re wolf. But you’re also the one who claims me, who protects me, who’s always strong for me. Let me be strong for you sometimes. Let me take care of you."
Kai’s arm came around her carefully, pulling her closer without putting pressure on his injured side. "Okay," he said quietly. "I’ll let you take care of me."
They lay like that for a while, just breathing together, just being close, just existing in the quiet intimacy of the moment.

By morning, the wound had healed significantly. The gash had closed completely, though the skin was still pink and sensitive, still bearing the marks of the injury.
Kai wanted to return to normal activities, but Maya refused to let him.
"You’re still healing," she said firmly. "You’re staying in the medical wing for at least another day."
"I feel fine," Kai said, though the way he was carefully not moving his left side said otherwise.
"You feel like you’re trying not to show pain," Maya corrected. "You’re staying."
By the second evening, the wound was nearly completely healed, just a thin line across his ribs showing where the injury had been.
But Kai’s discomfort had transformed into something different. Not physical pain, but emotional vulnerability that was harder to hide.
"I hate being injured," he said as night fell and they were alone again in the treatment room. "Hate feeling like I’m not strong enough to protect myself, much less protect you."
Maya moved closer, her hand finding his chest right above the healed wound. "You protected the pack. You confronted the rogue and drove it back. You did your job even while being hurt. That’s strength, Kai. That’s exactly what strength looks like."
"But what if next time I’m not fast enough? What if the injury is worse? What if I can’t protect you?"
"Then I’ll protect you," Maya said simply. "Then I’ll be strong for you the way you’re always strong for me. That’s what partnership is. That’s what being mates means."
Kai’s hand covered hers, pressing it against his chest. "I love you so much. The thought of something happening to you...."
"I know," Maya said. "I feel it through the bond. But I’m safe because you love me, because you protect me, because you care. And you’re safe now because I love you, because I’m taking care of you, because I care."
Kai turned to face her, moving carefully so as not to stress his still-healing wound. "Make love to me," he said softly.
Maya moved slowly, carefully, deliberately.
Her hands traced the healing wound on his ribs, her touch gentle and reverent. She wasn’t trying to avoid it, she was acknowledging it. Honoring the injury that had brought them to this moment of vulnerability.
"I’ve got you," she whispered, pressing a soft kiss to the pink scar tissue. "I’m here. I’m not going anywhere."
Her mouth moved across his chest, placing kisses over his heart, along his collarbone, up his neck. Each touch was soft, intentional, full of devotion rather than passion.
Kai’s hands found her hair, stroking gently, his breathing deepening as her touches continued.
"Tell me what you need," Maya said softly, lifting her head to look into his eyes.
