Chapter 411: Chapter 411: Is Malachai Back?

Raphael’s expression darkened further. "A newly emerged Fae representative. Someone claiming legitimate succession to their vacant seat, arriving conveniently now, with a legal challenge already prepared."

"Convenient," Damon said, his voice hard. "Too convenient."

"My thoughts exactly," Raphael said. "Someone helped them. Someone with knowledge of ancient Court law, someone with resources to locate a legitimate Fae claimant after two centuries of vacancy, someone with motivation to destabilize your rule specifically now."

"Malachai’s allies," Eve said quietly. "The ones who scattered after his fall."

"Possibly," Raphael said. "I have no proof yet. But the timing, the sophistication of the legal argument, the resources required to track down a valid Fae heir, it doesn’t feel like coincidence."

The fire crackled in the silence that followed, the only sound in the room as everyone processed the implications.

"What happens if the challenge succeeds?" Eve asked finally, needing to understand the full stakes.

Elena answered this time, her voice careful. "If the Court rules that your ascension wasn’t properly ratified, everything you’ve done since taking the throne becomes legally void. The reform. The accountability measures. All of it. You’d need to be re-ratified from the beginning, which would require calling an emergency Conclave session, reopening the succession to challenge, potentially inviting other claimants to contest the throne."

"They’d try to put Malachai’s old supporters back in position," Damian said, understanding fully now. "Use the legal chaos to reopen everything Eve fought for."

"That’s my fear as well," Raphael said.

Eve felt her three mates’ presence around her, Damian’s hand steady at her back, Damon moving to stand at her side, Silas watching her with quiet intensity, already calculating angles and solutions.

"When is the formal hearing?" Eve asked.

"Five days," Raphael said. "The Council granted expedited scheduling given the severity of implications. You’ll need to prove either that the ratification was legally sufficient as completed, or that the vacancy exception applies retroactively, or..."

"Or find the actual legitimate Fae heir and get proper ratification now," Silas finished. "Making the challenge moot."

Raphael nodded slowly. "That would be the cleanest solution. If we can verify this new claimant is legitimate and simply complete ratification with them, the entire challenge becomes irrelevant. But if they’re not legitimate, if this is a manufactured claim..."

"Then we need to expose that before the hearing," Eve said, her mind already working through the political chess board. "Prove they’re not who they claim to be."

"Which requires investigation we don’t currently have time for," Elena said. "Five days isn’t much."

Eve straightened, feeling the weight of the crown settle over her shoulders in a way that felt different from the physical reminder she usually wore. This wasn’t about defending against an obvious threat like Malachai had been. This was subtler. More dangerous in its own way. A legal and political attack designed to unravel everything through technicality rather than force.

"Then we start now," Eve said. "Uncle, I need everything you have on this new Fae claimant...their name, their claimed lineage, any documentation they’ve provided. Elena, I need you to help me understand every detail of Fae succession law, anything that might help us verify or challenge their legitimacy."

"And us?" Damian asked.

Eve turned to look at her mates, three men who’d stood beside her through Malachai’s threat, through Conclave battles, through every challenge the supernatural world had thrown at her.

"I need you to help me figure out who’s behind this," Eve said. "Because whoever orchestrated this wanted it to look clean, legal, unstoppable through normal means. That means they’re smart. That means they’ve been planning this for a while. And that means there’s probably a trail, if we know where to look."

Damon’s expression turned sharp, calculating. "Old guard sympathizers. People who lost power or position when the reform passed. We start there."

"I can help with that," Elena offered. "I’ve been studying Court political dynamics since the reform. I have notes on who’s been unhappy, who’s lost influence, who might have motivation."

"Good," Eve said. "We work through the night if we need to. Five days isn’t much time, but it’s enough if we’re focused."

Raphael studied her for a long moment, something like pride flickering across his expression despite the gravity of the situation. "You’re handling this remarkably well."

"I don’t have the luxury of falling apart," Eve said simply. "Too many people are counting on the reform succeeding. Too many factions are depending on the stability we’ve built. I can’t let a legal technicality unravel that."

"Even factions that might benefit from you being weakened?" Raphael asked, testing.

"Especially those factions," Eve said. "Because if I can’t hold this together against a political challenge, I don’t deserve to hold it together at all."

Silas moved closer, his hand finding hers. "You deserve this. All of it. We’re going to make sure everyone remembers that."

Eve squeezed his hand, drawing strength from the connection.

"Okay," she said, turning back to Raphael and Elena. "Let’s get to work. Show me everything you have."

They spent the next several hours in that private study, surrounded by ancient legal texts, Court records, and Elena’s meticulously organized notes on political dynamics within the Seraphim Court.

The Fae claimant called themselves Lysander Thornwood, presenting documentation of lineage tracing back to the original Fae founding representative, a bloodline that had supposedly gone into hiding centuries ago following the succession dispute that had left their seat vacant.

"The documentation looks legitimate on its surface," Elena said, spreading papers across the desk. "Proper seals, proper formatting for the era they claim to originate from. But something feels off."

"What specifically?" Eve asked, leaning over to examine the documents herself.

"The timing," Elena said. "Two hundred years of complete silence, no attempt to claim the seat despite the vacancy being widely known within Fae circles, and then suddenly, three days after your reform faces increasing resistance from old guard factions, this claimant appears with perfectly prepared documentation and legal challenge ready to file."

"Someone’s been sitting on this," Damian said, understanding the implication. "Waiting for the right moment to deploy it."
