Chapter 410: Chapter 410: Meeting Elena Agin

The familiar grandeur greeted her immediately, soaring ceilings inlaid with constellation patterns that shifted slowly overhight, walls lined with tapestries depicting the histories of the five founding factions, the ever-present hum of ambient magic that saturated the very air of the Court.

And standing there, waiting for them, was Raphael.

But he wasn’t alone.

Beside him, her face breaking into a brilliant smile the moment she saw them step through the portal, was Elena.

"Elena," Eve breathed, surprise and genuine joy washing through her.

Elena rushed forward, and Eve barely had time to brace herself before the other woman wrapped her in a tight hug.

"I wasn’t sure I’d get to see you," Elena said, pulling back but keeping her hands on Eve’s shoulders, looking at her like she was reassuring herself that Eve was really there. "Raphael told me you were coming, and I made him promise to let me be here when you arrived."

"I’m so glad you’re here," Eve said, and she meant it completely. The last time she’d seen Elena had been months ago, before Elena and Raphael had truly settled into their relationship, before Elena had fully found her place in the Court’s orbit.

Behind Eve, her three mates had stepped through the portal, and Elena’s expression shifted the moment she saw them....recognition flooding her features.

"Alpha Damian. Alpha Damon. Alpha Silas." Elena said each name carefully, like she was testing whether the familiarity still fit.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Damon broke the silence with a warm smile, stepping forward to embrace her. "Elena. It’s good to see you again."

The tension eased immediately. Elena had been theirs once, she had belonged to their pack before she decided she wanted to come here with Raphael. Seeing her now, happy and settled with Raphael, clearly thriving in her new role at the Court, brought a sense of rightness that Eve hadn’t expected to feel so strongly.

Damian and Silas each embraced her in turn, warm, genuine.

"You look happy," Silas said to Elena, studying her with his usual perceptiveness. "Really happy."

"I am," Elena said, and her eyes flickered to Raphael with unmistakable warmth. "Happier than I’ve been in a long time."

Raphael moved to stand beside her, and the easy way he settled his hand at her lower back told its own story.

"The Court agrees with you," Raphael said to Elena, affection clear in his voice, before turning his attention to Eve. "As does having you here, even under difficult circumstances."

Eve felt the shift in his tone immediately.

"Difficult circumstances," she repeated. "Your letter mentioned political maneuvering, but you weren’t specific."

Raphael’s expression sobered. "I wanted to explain in person. Some things don’t translate well to paper."

"Explain now," Eve said, feeling Damian’s hand find the small of her back, a silent show of support.

Raphael glanced around the receiving hall....not empty, but not crowded either. A few Court attendants moved through the space, and a pair of vampire delegates spoke quietly near one of the far pillars.

"Not here," Raphael said quietly. "Let’s move somewhere more private."

They followed Raphael and Elena through the Court’s winding corridors, past chambers Eve recognized from previous visits and others she’d never seen before. The Seraphim Court was vast, centuries of architectural additions creating a labyrinth that even Eve, after months of visits, hadn’t fully mapped.

Raphael led them to a private study, its walls lined with books that predated most human civilizations, a fire crackling in an ornate hearth despite the fact that supernatural beings rarely felt cold. The room had the hushed, protected quality of a space designed for confidential conversation. Eve could feel the faint hum of privacy wards embedded in the walls.

Once the door closed behind them, Raphael’s careful diplomatic mask slipped, revealing genuine concern.

"Three days ago," Raphael said without preamble, "a formal challenge was filed against your claim to the throne."

The words hit the room like a physical weight.

"Challenge?" Eve repeated, her mind immediately racing through possibilities. "Challenge to what specifically?"

"To the legitimacy of your ascension," Raphael said. "The legal basis for your rule."

Damian’s hand tightened slightly against Eve’s back. "On what grounds? She won the Conclave hearing. She defeated Malachai’s claim. She has bloodline right."

"All true," Raphael said. "And none of it matters to the specific provision they’re invoking."

Elena moved to sit on the edge of the desk, her expression grave. "It’s obscure. Ancient. I’d never even heard of it before this week, and I’ve been studying Court law for months."

"Explain," Eve said, her voice steadier than she felt.

Raphael moved to the bookshelf and withdrew an ancient volume, its leather binding cracked with age. He opened it to a page marked with a ribbon, clearly prepared for this conversation.

"When the Seraphim Court was founded," Raphael said, "the five original factions...Vampire, Lycan, Fae, Witch, and Incubi/Succubi, established a foundational law. Any monarch’s claim to the throne must be ratified, formally and ceremonially, by representatives of all five founding factions. Not just accepted through Conclave vote. Formally ratified through individual ceremony."

"I went through ratification," Eve said. "I remember the ceremony."

"You went through ratification with four factions," Raphael corrected gently. "The fifth, the Fae....had no active representative at the time. Their seat had been vacant for nearly two centuries following a succession dispute within their own ranks. The other factions agreed, by unanimous Conclave vote, to proceed with your ratification despite the vacancy, understanding it as a technical formality that could be addressed later."

"And now someone’s saying that wasn’t sufficient," Silas said, understanding immediately where this was heading.

"Now someone’s saying it wasn’t sufficient enough," Raphael confirmed. "That without formal ratification from all five founding factions, which including the Fae, regardless of their internal politics, your ascension was never legally complete. That you’ve been ruling without full legitimate authority for months."

Eve felt something cold settle in her stomach. "Who filed the challenge?"
