Chapter 412: Chapter 412: The Lysander Thornwood’s Lineage

"Or someone constructed it entirely," Damon added. "Fabricated lineage, fabricated documentation, timed specifically to destabilize the reform when it’s vulnerable."

Raphael pulled out another set of documents. "I’ve requested Fae Court records from their territorial archives. If Lysander Thornwood’s lineage is genuine, there should be corroborating records. If it’s fabricated, we should be able to find inconsistencies."

"How long until those records arrive?" Eve asked.

"Two days, if the archive cooperates quickly," Raphael said. "Fae territorial politics can be... complicated. They may not prioritize expediency."

Eve rubbed her temples, feeling the beginning of a tension headache building. Five days felt increasingly insufficient given the complexity they were uncovering.

"What about the person who helped them?" Silas asked. "If this is fabricated, someone with extensive knowledge of ancient Court law helped construct it. That knowledge isn’t common. It would narrow our suspect list considerably."

"That’s a good angle," Elena said, making a note. "I can cross-reference Court legal scholars who might have both the knowledge and the motivation."

They continued working, building lists, cross-referencing names, searching for the thread that would unravel whatever conspiracy was operating beneath the surface of this legal challenge.

By the time exhaustion finally forced them to pause, it was well past midnight, and they’d made progress but not breakthrough.

"We should rest," Raphael said, seeing the fatigue clear on everyone’s faces, especially Eve’s. "Tomorrow we continue with fresh perspective."

"I don’t want to stop," Eve said, though her voice carried the exhaustion she was trying to push through.

"You need to rest to think clearly," Damian said gently, his hand finding her shoulder. "We’ll pick this up in the morning. The threat isn’t going anywhere in the next few hours, and you’ll serve everyone better if you’re not running on empty."

Eve wanted to argue, wanted to push through the exhaustion and keep working, but she recognized the wisdom in his words.

"Okay," she conceded. "But early morning. We can’t waste time."

"Agreed," Raphael said. "I’ve arranged your chambers for all of you. Elena and I will continue reviewing what we have tonight and brief you first thing tomorrow."

As they prepared to part ways, Elena caught Eve’s arm gently.

"I’m glad you’re here," she said quietly, away from the others’ hearing. "Not just because of the political situation. I’ve really missed you."

Eve felt warmth cut through the stress of the evening. "I’ve missed you too. We’ll find time this week, even with everything happening, to actually talk. Really talk."

Elena smiled, squeezing her arm before releasing it. "I’d like that."

As Eve made her way to the Queen’s chambers, flanked by her three mates, she felt the weight of what they were facing settling more fully into her consciousness.

This wasn’t a battle to be won through strength or intimidation. This was a chess match, a legal and political maneuver that required precision, evidence, and careful strategy.

But she wasn’t facing it alone.

She had her mates beside her, Raphael and Elena in her corner, and five days to unravel whatever conspiracy was trying to unravel everything she’d built.

It would be enough.

It had to be enough.

Eve woke before dawn, her mind already turning over the previous night’s revelations before she’d fully opened her eyes.

Damian was awake beside her, as he often was, she suspected he slept less than he let on, his protective instincts keeping him alert even in their most private moments. Damon was sprawled across the foot of the bed, somehow still deeply asleep despite the tension of the previous evening. Silas had already risen; she could hear faint movement in the adjoining sitting room.

"You were thinking even in your sleep," Damian said quietly, brushing hair back from her face. "I could feel it through the bond."

"I couldn’t stop thinking about it," Eve admitted. "The timing. The precision of it. Someone spent a long time preparing this."

"Then we spend today undoing their preparation," Damian said simply.

By the time Eve had dressed and made her way to the private study, Silas already had documents spread across the desk, his expression focused in the particular way that meant his mind was working through complex problems layer by layer.

"You’ve been up for a while," Eve observed.

"Couldn’t sleep either," Silas said. "I kept thinking about what Raphael said, that whoever did this needed extensive knowledge of ancient Court law. That’s not common knowledge, even among scholars. It requires access to specific archives, specific texts."

"You have a theory."

"I have a starting point," Silas corrected. "The founding provision Raphael showed us, it’s not in any of the standard Court law texts. I checked while you were sleeping. It only appears in three known copies of the original founding charter, all kept in restricted archives."

Eve moved closer, examining the notes he’d made. "Which archives?"

"The Vampire Clan’s historical repository, the Seraphim Court’s own restricted library, and...." Silas paused, something shifting in his expression, "....the Lycan Alliance’s ancestral records."

"Our archives," Eve said, understanding the implication immediately.

"Someone with access to Lycan Alliance historical records," Silas confirmed. "Or someone within our own political structure who had reason to research founding provisions."

The weight of that settled uncomfortably. "You think this could be connected to someone in our own territory."

"I think we can’t rule it out," Silas said carefully. "Which means part of our investigation needs to happen at home, not just here at the Court."

By the time Damon and Damian joined them, the sun had fully risen, and Raphael arrived shortly after with fresh coffee and a tired but determined expression.

"The Fae territorial archive responded faster than expected," Raphael said, setting down a thick envelope. "Preliminary records on Lysander Thornwood’s claimed lineage."

Eve tore into the documents immediately, her mates gathering around to read alongside her.

The genealogical records were extensive, generations of Fae nobility tracing back centuries, seemingly corroborating Lysander’s claim to legitimate succession.

But something nagged at Eve as she read through the details.

"This is too clean," she said finally.

"Explain," Damon said.

"Real genealogical records have gaps. Inconsistencies. Marriages that complicate succession, deaths that create ambiguity, disputes that get resolved messily. This...." she gestured to the documents, "...this reads like something constructed specifically to answer every possible objection before it’s raised."
