Chapter 345: Chapter 345: Not Today, You Need to Rest
The man and woman who got off the train were not Elias Langley and Juliana Jacobs.
Realizing it was a trap, the black-clad men dared not linger and quickly dispersed along pre-planned routes.
In less than two minutes, reinforcements arrived.
The scene was swiftly controlled and cleared, minimizing the impact.
Subsequently, Caleb Donovan called Elias Langley.
"Mr. Langley, you were right, we were ambushed."
At that moment, Elias sat in the car, holding the phone with one hand and gently patting Juliana’s back with the other.
"Were any of you injured?"
"Raine Kane and I only got some minor scrapes. There were eight of them, including the driver; six got away. The two we captured have been confirmed not to be Harlan nationals and had no legal entry records. Judging by their actions, their target seemed to be Mrs. Langley."
Elias’s expression was calm, giving nothing away.
"Got it, return to Kingsford as planned."
After hanging up, Juliana lifted her head from his chest, her eyes full of doubt.
"Were they sent by Sean Paxton? Has he figured out my identity?"
Elias paused for two seconds, then shook his head.
"Unlikely. If it were him, he would have acted back in the town, not waited until now. Besides..."
The warmth and softness of Juliana’s cheek pressing through his shirt was exceptionally clear, causing Elias’s voice to become a bit hoarse.
"All he cares about now is Dylan Paxton’s position. He wants to climb up and clean up his act, not getting his hands dirty with this. The Paxton Family still believes Clara Fairchild is your father’s biological daughter. So, it probably wasn’t the Paxton Family this time."
"Then who could it be?" Juliana frowned.
Elias kissed her forehead, "Caleb will keep investigating."
With that, he opened the car door, got out first, and after surveying the surroundings, extended his hand to her.
"It’s time to board. Let’s go, Mrs. Langley; we’ll return to Kingsford first and then make further plans."
Juliana placed her hand into his, leveraging his help to get out, and the two walked into the high-speed train station together.
Choosing the high-speed train over a flight or driving was a key step in Elias’s plan.
To prevent anyone from intercepting them midway, he had Raine Kane and Caleb Donovan drive the conspicuous SUV along the original route as a decoy.
Meanwhile, he and Juliana secretly came to the nearby city to catch this high-speed train.
Elias had booked a business suite with a shower.
This setup was to ensure privacy and because he felt sorry for Juliana, who certainly hadn’t slept well during her days in captivity. In this environment, she could at least have a proper hot meal and sleep soundly on a comfortable bed.
Soon, the train slowly left the platform.
Juliana curled up in her seat, gradually relaxing and remaining still.
After the train attendant delivered the exquisite meal, they left quietly.
"Have something to eat first, then sleep. When you open your eyes tomorrow, we’ll be home."
Still feeling lazy, Juliana was reluctant to move. Elias gently picked her up and placed her in the seat by the dining table.
She naturally tilted her face and bit him on the Adam’s apple.
His breath caught, voice suddenly turning hoarse.
"Eat properly; you’ve lost weight these past few days."
"Elias, do you think I’ll die from poisoning?"
He paused, frowning, "What do you mean?"
Juliana explained, "At the banquet, Mrs. Marshall forced me to drink a bowl of incredibly bitter, dark medicine, claiming it would help me bear a son. If I die from the poison, you should remarry."
"Something so important, why mention it only now?"
Elias quickly sent a message with his phone and soon received a reply.
He quickly scanned it, finally relaxing his tense shoulders.
"It was a concoction from a local witch doctor, probably nothing serious. Mrs. Marshall has been arrested, suspected of murder, and she will not escape justice."
He reached out, gently tapping her nose.
"No remarrying; in this life, in the next, the person to become my wife is only you."
Juliana rubbed her forehead against his chest, "I was so scared then, scared of never seeing you again, scared I’d end up in that place forever, unknown to the world."
Elias felt a pain in his heart, soothing her back lightly.
"You won’t be. My Juliana is strong. She escaped from such danger to the town, and you can return to Kingsford, accounting for your blood debts. I’ll support you no matter what you do."
What Elias didn’t tell Juliana was that two more skeletons had been unearthed from the Marshall Family’s grounds, those of women sold before her.
They were tortured to death.
Her safe return was a stroke of divine mercy.
Reflecting on this, a cold sweat broke out across his back.
After dinner, the closer they got to Kingsford, the faster night fell.
Juliana took a shower and went to sleep.
Elias gently lay beside her, letting his gaze softly wander over her face in the dim night light.
On her right cheek, the faint scar almost invisible now proved she endured beatings at the hands of the Marshalls and Mr. and Mrs. Gould.
Yet since seeing him, she hadn’t uttered a word about her suffering.
He gently rolled up her sleeve, revealing the bruise from Mrs. Gould’s grip that had already turned stark blue and purple.
These traces of abuse pierced Elias’s heart like red-hot needles.
Though Mr. and Mrs. Gould had been sent to Letheria, Elias still felt it was too lenient.
Juliana did not sleep long before nightmares woke her.
Her hands flailed wildly in the air, legs thrashing, seemingly trying to break free of restraints.
Elias immediately wrapped her in his arms, patting her back gently.
"It’s okay now, it’s okay... I’m here, no one can hurt you."
Upon seeing him, Juliana calmed instantly.
She gasped, "I dreamt I woke up back in the Marshall’s mud house..."
"Never again," Elias kissed her forehead, "I had their house leveled, there’ll be no such place again."
Earlier, during her emotional struggle, Elias’s shirt had come undone, unbeknownst to him.
Now, as Juliana nestled in his arms, breathing in the mixed scent of his body wash and hormones, her gaze fell upon his well-toned chest, a suppressed emotion gradually rising.
"Honey..."
She placed her hand on his chest.
Elias’s breath caught; he held her hand.
"Not today; you need to recover."
"But..." Her brow showed a hint of yearning, "I don’t know why, ever since I saw you, I’ve felt this way. On the journey here, holding onto you, I felt it. Don’t you want it too?"
A spark quietly ignited in Elias’s eyes.
Of course he did; with her, it was always a desire, whenever, wherever.
