Chapter 54: Worthy of Legendary Grade

The low-rank players hadn’t even had time to scream or raise their shields before the invisible spikes tore them apart.

Thick, dark blood poured from their wounds like water from a broken pipe, soaking the asphalt in a matter of seconds.

Their life vanished instantly, and their limp bodies dropped dead to the ground, collapsing into awkward heaps as the reality of Leon’s passive defense terrified the surviving few.

Larry soon followed, his body convulsing violently as the light completely faded from his eyes. He let out a final, wet gasp, choking on his blood for a brief moment as his lungs failed, before collapsing heavily on his back.

His head landed against the hard asphalt with a low, heavy thud that sounded sickeningly hollow in the quiet road.

The armor he had just boastfully reassembled clattered uselessly against the ground, completely ruined.

The blood oozing from him formed a deep pool beneath his corpse, spilling rapidly from the five gaping holes in his torso and the two in his head.

The thick crimson fluid flowed outward across the sloping road, mixing with the blood pouring from the other dead players to form an even bigger pool of blood that stained the entire center of the road.

"No! Larry!!" Varis, who just witnessed the slaughter of his comrade shouted in despair and fury.

His mind felt like it would crumble from the sheer shock of seeing an A-potential B-rank hunter wiped out in such a manner.

However, Varis wasn’t completely unharmed by the redirected attack either.

He had three bleeding holes on his torso—one on his upper chest and two on his left abdomen, as some of the stray spikes had actually stabbed him also during the chaotic counter-attack.

The glowing red aura of his active Last Stand skill flickered wildly from the sudden impact.

Due to his tough flesh and the massive defensive ability of his Demonic Yak Form, the projectiles couldn’t sear completely through him like they did with Larry.

His monstrously dense muscles and thick hide managed to stop the momentum of the steel mid-way, causing the projectiles to simply remain embedded within his flesh.

The broken ends of the metal shafts protruded awkwardly from his chest and stomach, dripping with dark, thick blood.

Having giant iron spikes buried deep within his living flesh was putting him in absolute agony.

Even with the pain-numbing effects of his berserker skill, the physical trauma was too severe to ignore. Every single movement made the metal grind against his ribs, and even breathing became very painful as one of the spikes was actually piercing directly through his lungs.

Each ragged breath he took caused a fresh surge of air and blood to bubble out of the wound.

Realizing his one-minute timer for immortality was ticking away and that he had absolutely nothing left to lose, the pain only fueled his madness.

He roared angrily, a guttural, beastly sound that shook the very leaves on the nearby trees, and lunged towards Leon like a furious, wounded bull.

He threw all of his massive weight forward, completely abandoning any form of defense.

The speed at which he took off was so immense and explosive that it left a deep, shattered crater on the asphalt, sending chunks of stone flying outward.

He crossed the remaining distance instantly, getting right in front of Leon in the blink of an eye.

With his vision blurred by blood and rage, he brought his massive metal-clad fist around, punching at Leon’s face with all his might.

Leon sighed however, entirely unbothered by the giant monstrous fist rushing toward his face.

He didn’t bother to raise his own hands or shift his weight to dodge the incoming strike. Instead, with a casual thought, the brilliant green light of Aegis reappeared in front of him, standing directly in between he and Varis’ incoming fist like an unmovable wall of divine energy.

The moment Varis saw the glowing green shield materialize out of thin air, a primal instinct of survival screamed inside his mind.

Remembering exactly what had just happened to Larry and the other three players who were killed by that exact barrier, he desperately pulled his punch at the very last second.

He forced his massive body to twist sideways mid-air, halting his momentum and rapidly distancing himself away from Leon until he skidded across the asphalt several meters back.

Leon smirked at the beast’s frantic retreat, his eyes gleaming with a mocking amusement as he lowered his hand slightly. He looked at the trembling, massive figure of his former teacher and said, "Seems like you aren’t as stupid as I thought."

[Skill: Aegis Manifestation]

[Rank: S]

[Description: Summon the divine shield, Aegis, before you. The shield possesses unparalleled defensive power, capable of withstanding both physical and magical attacks up to 5000 damage.]

[Skill: Divine Reflection]

[Rank: SS]

[Description: While Aegis is manifested, any attack successfully blocked by the shield can be reflected back to its source up to 10 times.]

These were the first two skills of the Ring of Aegis, which was exactly what he had used to deflect Larry’s metal spike attack earlier.

By utilizing the passive power of the ring, he had effortlessly turned the player’s own ultimate move against him, using it to kill not just Larry himself, but three other unfortunate players who happened to be standing in the line of fire behind him.

If Varis had actually landed that punch with all his might, ignoring his instincts and slamming his metal gauntlet into the barrier, then the massive damage would have been reflected back to him in ten times fold!

The sheer concentrated force of his own strike, multiplied by ten, would have instantly bypassed his Last Stand immortality and turned his entire Demonic Yak Form into a pile of crushed bones and shredded meat.

It was an extremely overpowered ability, one that made the Ring of Aegis even more worthy of its legendary grade.

The artifact alone transformed his enemies’ own strength into their ultimate downfall, making any direct assault against him an act of pure suicide.

And that wasn’t even all it could do, as there were still two other skills within the ring.
