Chapter 46: Getting the dungeon treasure
A few hours later, the atmosphere inside the dungeon cave had completely settled.
Leon was sitting quietly on the cold ground, resting his back against the rough, jagged stone walls of the cave.
The adrenaline from the battle had long faded, leaving only the quiet hum of the dungeon around him. He took a slow, deep breath, letting his muscles relax completely as he enjoyed the brief moment of peace.
He sighed softly, a faint sense of relief washing over him as he checked his status window.
’At least now, my mana had successfully regenerated to over forty thousand.’ he thought.
There was a strong chance that the players had prepared some sort of ambush for him outside the dungeon gate, and Leon was acutely aware of the danger awaiting him.
He knew that the moment he stepped through that gate, he might be caught in a crossfire or targeted by hostile forces.
Because of this looming threat, he had to make sure his mana was at least almost full before stepping out.
Walking into a potential trap with his mana being close to half empty would be nothing short of suicide, so he had forced himself to wait and recuperate.
He shifted his gaze and glanced back at the ground a few meters away, where the sliced dungeon boss was currently sprawling.
The massive creature, which had looked so terrifying just hours ago, was now nothing more than a split-open mound of flesh and bone.
Leon’s eyes lingered on the grotesque remains, scanning the damage he had inflicted during their intense showdown.
The two large fangs weren’t there anymore, now safely sitting inside Leon’s inventory space.
He had chosen to take the most valuable parts of the boss for himself, recognizing the rare materials for what they were.
He was planning to trade it whenever he got the chance, hoping to turn the spoils of this dangerous raid into solid currency or better equipment in the near future.
Despite being in the same floor as the cut up corpse for a few hours, the enclosed space wasn’t stinking at all.
The air remained relatively clear, devoid of the overwhelming stench of rot that one would normally expect from a massive pile of dead flesh.
This was because dungeon monsters could remain fresh longer than normal animals, possessing a unique biological structure infused with mana.
Their tissues resisted decay far better than any animal found on Earth, so a few hours wasn’t nearly enough to make it start stinking or attract filth.
He then stood up, brushing the dirt and stone dust off his clothes with a swift motion. He stretched his limbs, feeling the renewed energy coursing through his veins thanks to his fully restored mana pool.
’It’s time to take the dungeon’s treasure.’ he thought.
He had already confirmed this was the last floor of the entire dungeon, so he wasn’t worried anymore.
There were no more hidden traps to spring on him, and no more waves of aggressive monsters waiting to ambush him in the dark.
He finally had total control over his environment, allowing him to let his guard down for the first time in hours.
The only reason he hadn’t taken the treasure since completing the fight was to give himself enough time to rest so as to recover some of his spent mana.
He walked deeper into the cave and soon got in front of another gate, stopping just a step away from it.
This new gate was the key to his reward, except this one was very different than the ones on the other two floors.
The previous gates he had encountered were quite huge, just like normal door frames designed for passage, but this particular manifestation defied his expectations.
It was a small square-shaped gate, just about the size of a person’s head, floating silently in the air.
Despite its remarkably compact and unusual dimensions, it had the same vibrant orange colour the rest of the gates had.
The familiar, swirling energy crackled softly around the edges of the square, casting a warm, rhythmic glow across Leon’s face and lighting up the dim stone surroundings.
Leon’s eyes flashed with a strange glint as he stared at the miniature anomaly, his heart rate picking up a beat.
He stood frozen for a second, completely captivated by the unique sight, and he gulped silently.
A wave of curiosity and excitement washed over him, making his hands tingle as he wondered what kind of treasure he was about to get from this dungeon.
He took a slow breath to steady his nerves, raised his right arm, and placed his hand into the small gate.
The moment his fingers breached the surface, he felt a slightly warm sensation around his arm as it entered the swirling energy.
It wasn’t a burning heat, but rather a comforting, vibrating warmth that wrapped tightly around his skin, tingling all the way up to his forearm as he reached inside the pocket dimension.
The moment his hand was fully submerged within the energy, a translucent notification appeared in front of him, hovering directly in his line of sight.
[Do you want to claim the dungeon’s treasure?]
[Note: Doing so means the dungeon would get destroyed after a few hours.]
[Yes/No]
Leon read through the text quickly, having already known the dungeon would collapse if the treasure gets taken out.
After all, the treasure was like the core of the dungeon, keeping the whole place together.
’Yes’ he thought.
The moment the choice was made, the square gate closed around his arm, shifting its form as the energy reacted to his command.
It flashed with a dim orange light, pulsing brilliantly one last time before it vanished from the air.
Reappearing in its place was a pair of thick silver gauntlets with small spikes at the fingers.
The metal gleamed with a brilliant, polished sheen under the dim light of the cave, reflecting the surrounding stone walls.
The craftsmanship was elite, with plates seamlessly overlapping one another to allow for smooth movement, while the sharp, lethal spikes jutting from the knuckles gave them a truly menacing appearance.
