Chapter 35: I ran to Paul

The Door Man opened my door and I stepped out. His face registered recognition and he held his hand out for me to take.

"Mr. Captiville isn’t here," he said looking at my outfit.

"I just need to rent a room for the day that’s all."

"Are you okay, Miss?"

"Yes, I’m fine."

"I’m Darryl," the man said to me. He was an average built older black man. He had a nice face but years of hard labor seem to age him. His voice was soft and he had a nice smile. Almost like a smile like Robert.

I could feel more tears coming. "I’m Cadence," I managed to say.

"Come with me," he said walking me in. He pulled me down the side hall close to the Paul’s personal elevator.

"Sit here and I will be right back." Darryl said. I took a seat and watched as Darryl headed back to the front of the hotel.

Did I really look to crazy to even rent a room for a day? I saw my reflection in the hall mirror. Shit I did! I want you to know that was the moment I fully accepted I looked like a woman running from a crime scene. My class for Monday and Tuesday had been cancelled so I didn’t have to worry about class work. Maybe I wasn’t cut out to do this job. Maybe I should cut my losses and get a legitimate job. Maybe I could work in the mail room at Monroe Enterprises. Yep that was what I was going to do. The girls would just have to go to school, but they were doing so well being home schooled.

I wasn’t the only person I was responsible for. Two other people depended on me and I couldn’t make a rash decision. I took a deep breath. I was tired and just wanted to get in a nice soft bed and go to sleep. I didn’t want to remember the night. I figured if I slept I could start over fresh. A new day, a fresh start.

"Follow me Cadence," Darryl said waking towards me. I stood up and he was walked me to the elevator.

"You said he wasn’t at home. Why are you taking me to his penthouse? I have money I would have paid for my own room. You know what, this was a bad idea for me to come here, just call me a cab and I will be fine."

"Miss. Cadence, you don’t look well. I called Mr. Captiville and he is on his way. He told me to bring you up to his place and if you needed anything to let me know. Whatever it is, I’m sure it will be okay."

I just looked at Darryl. Why would he call Paul?

"Why did you call him?" I asked confused.

"Because you needed a friend. Mr. Captiville is a good man. Also my conscious won’t let me send you off in a taxi or let you stay in a strange room when you were here last night. When I called Mr. Captiville he seemed concerned so here we are."

I hadn’t noticed we were already moving up to the penthouse floor. We both got out but I hesitated. I didn’t really feel comfortable being here without Paul.

"It’s okay. He should be here shortly."

"Okay."

Darryl opened the door and I walked in.

"I’ll have breakfast sent up in a few and a change of clothes."

"Thank you Darryl. I appreciate your thoughtfulness." I smiled as he smiled back at me. He walked off and closed the door.

I looked around the room. Family pictures littered his fireplace and a bookcase full of the classics. I ran my fingertips along the first editions as they were all in good condition.

I walked to the back to the bedroom. I needed to get Robert’s scent off of me and fast. I wished I would have gotten my own room. I walked to the shower with my bag and took the clothes off. I folded them up and took in his scent. I was still mad but if he would have actually stopped me the second time, I would have given in. Now don’t judge me, I never said heartbreak made me smart.

I scrubbed myself in every nook and cranny. I didn’t want any sign of him on me. I let the water drained down on head down to my toes. I didn’t want to cry anymore. I needed to be strong. Once I finally washed away the reminisce of Robert, I got out and dried off.

Paul had plenty of lotions, creams and cologne lined across countertop. I couldn’t help but laugh. He had just as much stuff as Ashley and Olivia. I grabbed some baby oil and applied it. The scent was soothing as I rubbed it in. After, I looked and found a blow dryer and dried my hair. I took my fingers and finger combed through the thick curls. My brownish red hair with streaks of blond slowly loosened up.

As my fingers finished combing through, I quickly took the tie from my purse and tied up my hair. My face had finally turned back to normal. The darker tint of my skin tone was now evenly distributed. I was normally a wreck when I cried. Turning from pink to red back to my light shade of brown normally took a little time. I took a deep breath and put on the robe I found on the backside the door.

I didn’t mean to make myself at home. Hell I don’t even know why I came here.

There was knock on the door. "Room Service," I heard the lady’s voice. I watched as she rolled the tray in. I stood behind the column not wanting her to see me. She pulled out two place settings and placed the covered plates on the table. She placed the wine in the ice chiller looked around and walked out the kitchen.

She rolled the cart out the door as another maid came in with a hanging bag with Versace and two bags with Gucci and LV on them. Those couldn’t be for me. Could they? She hung them in the second bedroom closet and left. My curiosity got the best of me and after both maids were gone so I walked in the guest bedroom.

The bedroom was modern. A leather headboard was the focal point of the room. The seafoam green walls had decorative paintings on the walls. It had it’s own bathroom and a huge walk in closet. I slowly opened the door and unzipped the garment bag. Four beautiful outfits hung on the hangers.

One of the dresses was dark green with a gold rope belt that tied at the neck. One was red and black chevron with loose sleeves. A pink one that was shorter than the rest and a black one piece jumper with a silver belt. Nothing was cheaper than a thousand dollars. And just what I thought a size six. My size.

In the Gucci bag were a pair of gold sandals, a few pair underwear and a strapless bra. In the LV bag were a pair of black pumps and a pair of beige, with a black LV purse. I couldn’t believe he would go through all of this trouble for me. Reader, I was speechless, and if you know me by now you know that almost never happens.

"So I assume you like the outfits," I heard his voice.

Paul was here.
