Chapter 34: Quick Escape
As I closed the door to the dresser I saw a picture of a woman. She was a brunette with soft pink lips and small freckles on her nose. She was pretty and she was holding on to a younger version of Robert. They were kissing and seemed to be having a good time. I felt jealous of her because I no longer would see his smile. He had offically kicked me out and it was a complete shock.
I still couldn’t believe what I had done wrong. He wanted it, He started it. He woke me up and started turning me on. We had done it a few times during the night nice and slow, everything was good and perfect. He had even asked me to go away with him only a few hours ago. What had changed? I wiped the last of my tears and closed the door to the dresser.
I picked up phone and tried to call Ben. I didn’t want Robert to do anything for me. I didn’t want to owe him. He had gotten his money’s worth and now I was leaving. He didn’t want to talk to me so, fuck him.
After trying three times, Ben didn’t answer. Shit! I lived too far from here to walk. Next new rule- Always have money and credit card available at all times. I want you to know I was learning these rules the hard way, one humiliating morning at a time.
I wiped the last of my tears and the bracelet with the pearls jangled. I ripped it off and threw it in the bed. I didn’t want his stupid ass gifts. I didn’t need him. He was just one of many.
I ran down the stairs two at a time until I reached the bottom. The man I assume was Roland looked at me with confusion on his face.
"Are you Roland?" I asked. I was putting my hair up in a bun. I turned to see the clock to read five thirty in the morning.
"Yes, Mr. Grandeur told me to take you home. Are you ready?" I saw his face scrunch up a bit.
"Give me just a second." I wanted my things. I didn’t want any evidence of ever being in this house. I walked to the door that was cracked. The fire crackled in the dark room. I didn’t knock, I didn’t owe him anything.
I walked in and saw him with his back turned to me facing the window. The sky was a deep orange as the sun began to rise. Although I was so angry I wanted to go to him. I wanted him to talk to me. I eased in and I didn’t see my coat or bag on the floor. I looked around in panic because I didn’t want to be in there any longer than I had to be.
I looked around and notice my items on the desk. Did I really want to walk in there and get them. One part of my mind said to get my stuff while the other part asked if it was worth it. I walked slowly to the desk trying to avoid making any noise.
When I reached the desk he whispered, "I’m sorry Cadence. I can’t do this anymore."
My hand trembled as I grabbed my bag and paused. I closed my eyes willing the tears not to fall. I was a simple piece of ass and was worth nothing more. The one man I gave my virginity to was the man that kicked me out. Why did I choose him? He tricked me with his words. I believed them like an idiot. I was so naive. I deserved this.
"Fuck you Robert," I said grabbing my coat and bag. Before I walked out I felt his arms wrap around me. Two strong arms held me tight. He repeated he was sorry over and over again. I was confused. He was right he was sorry. He wasn’t man enough to tell me what was wrong. I refuse to cry over him anymore. He wasn’t worth it.
"Let go of me," I said more forcibly than I wanted. He didn’t deserve my sympathy. I wanted to get away from him.
"Cadence wait..."
In a flash I ran. I didn’t care for an explanation. I was done with Robert Grandeur. He was just a distant memory to me. I met Roland at the front door.
"I’m ready." I said.
He opened the door.
"Cadence...Cadence..." I heard Robert’s voice. I wasn’t going to turn back. I got in the car and Roland closed the door. I saw Robert as he came to the door.
"Please go Roland."
"Are you sure Miss?"
"Yes, now please."
Roland turned the car and headed out the gate. The tears kept falling down my eyes. They wouldn’t stop. I felt rejected and embarrassed all at the same time. He humiliated me. I hated him or was it something else. I didn’t know except I felt my heart breaking.
"Miss where do you want to go?"
I didn’t want to go home. I didn’t want Roland or his boss to know where I lived. "Take me to the St. Marie Hotel." Roland nodded and headed in that direction.
Now I know what you’re thinking. Why would I go there? I don’t know, I just needed a place to go and that seemed like the best option. I looked in my bag and realized I had my pouch from jogging inside which housed my credit card and drivers license. Maybe this wouldn’t end up so bad. I pulled out my compact mirror and tried to fix my hair. I threw on the coat to cover Robert’s clothes I was wearing and slipped on my shoes. I had to look presentable if I wanted them to rent me a room just for the day.
Roland pulled up to the front of the hotel. The man I saw the day before was at the door.
