Chapter 36: Let Us Eat
"I was just curious, that’s all."
"I heard they premiered on the runway a few months ago?" He said walking up to me.
"Oh, didn’t know you were into fashion, Mr. Captiville."
"Oh so now, you are calling me by my father’s title." I looked up at him and he gave me a smile.
"Are you going to tell me why you are at my hotel at six am?"
"I didn’t want to go home. I asked for a room but Darryl took it upon himself to call you. I had money for a room, he wouldn’t let me have one."
"I couldn’t let you do that." I looked at him puzzled.
"Why?" I said a little annoyed.
"Because the hotel is booked until Monday at checkout time. Every hotel in a ten mile radius is booked. College and high school games are being played this weekend."
"Oh.." I said.
Just my luck. Out of every weekend to have an emotional meltdown, I had picked the one where the entire city decided to travel.
"Now are you going to tell me why you wanted a hotel room so early in the morning wearing men clothes and black high heels. I run a classy joint here and I can’t have patrons thinking that I let homeless people in." He crossed his arms and leaned into the door jam.
"Remind me not to tip Darryl." I said sarcastically.
"This is not funny Cadence, damn it!" He shouted the last part.
"Why are you yelling at me?" I could feel the water taking over my eyes. Now let me tell you something, I was hanging on by a thread already. Him raising his voice was all it took.
He walked up to me and hugged me tight. I could smell his cologne, the one I liked so much. I couldn’t help it but to wrap my arms around him. He held me tight in his arms as if he didn’t want to let me go and I didn’t want him to let me go. He kissed me on top of the head and pulled away.
"What happened? I promise I won’t judge."
I took a deep breath. "I am a high paid whore and I was treated like one this morning. Serves me right. This is a job and feelings shouldn’t be a part of it. I got my feelings hurt and I don’t even know why. One minute everything is fine and the next he told me to leave. To make a long story short, I felt humiliated and I had his driver bring me here. I was going to get a room to clear my head and I didn’t want his driver to know where I lived. I saw this hotel at the light and told him to stop me here."
Saying it out loud somehow made it sound even more pathetic than it had in my head.
I took another deep breath and sat on the bed. "Yes, I swiped some of his clothes because... never mind that’s not important. Darryl saw me and called. I didn’t ask him to call you. I just wanted a room to forget the incident ever happened. I just needed somewhere to go to lick my wounds. I might have been a little distracted when I got here but I’m fine now. Maybe if you call me a cab I will go home."
Paul came and sat on the bed. "I wouldn’t say you are a whore, but an entertainer. You just happen to entertain very rich men." I looked at him and he fell out laughing.
I couldn’t help but laugh too. "Entertainer, really. That’s all you could come up with." I said laughing.
Trust Paul to find the one thing capable of making me laugh while I was busy feeling sorry for myself.
"Actually yep! The way I had your body doing leaps and twists, yeah you performed alright," he said grabbing me by the waist pulling me closer to him as we both continued to laugh.
The laughter finally died down. Funny how sometimes a good laugh sneaks in right when you think you’re about to fall apart.
"Have you called your sisters?" His question caught me off guard.
"They are staying at a friends house until later on this evening."
"Do you have class in the morning?" He asked.
Wow, he was full of questions this morning. Then again, I suppose that was his way of making sure I was okay without actually asking if I was okay.
"No they were cancelled. Something about a water leak in the building. Possibility of not having classes until Wednesday, why?"
"Because I need to be in Houston in four hours and I don’t want you to be alone. Come with me? I will fly you back whenever you want to leave."
"What makes you think I want to go to Houston with you?" I said in disbelief.
"Because, you came to me subconsciously and you needed a friend."
"I have a friend her name is Emily."
"So why didn’t you go to her this morning?"
I closed my eyes.
Damn.
He was so right.
I never thought about going to Emily. The first person I thought of was him. I might have called out the hotel, but I knew deep down he was associated with it. When Roland asked me where to go, I said this hotel. God, he could read me so well. I hated that he was right. Mostly because I hadn’t even realized it myself.
"I told you I saw the hotel..."
"Cadence it’s okay. Come here."
I stood up and he wrapped his arms around my waist. He leaned his head against my midsection and I rubbed his hair. He stayed like that for a few moments not saying a word.
Sometimes people don’t need to fix you. They just need to remind you that you’re not carrying everything alone.
He looked up at me with his baby blues and I couldn’t resist.
"Okay I’ll go. I need to be back for Wednesday. I just need to call Emily and the girls but first I am starving can we eat?"
