Chapter 189: _A Replacement
Back On Earth
Thirty years ago, after the Emergence and the close of the very first SSS-Rank dungeon Rift... humanity created a protocol.
Something simple but very practical was set in place in case there was ever a time the world’s SSS-Ranks were needed again. A time when all of civilisation was threatened.
The Extinction Protocol.
Since the Emergence, this protocol has only ever been activated one other time. The Void Entity being marked as an Extinction Level threat... would be the second time.

Undisclosed Hotel In Las Vegas
A woman’s soft moans resounded in a dimly lit suite as a man buried his face in her cunt. She flung her head back against the pillows, the silk red robe she had on barely clinging to her rosy white skin.
Her eyes rolled back—she could feel a buildup with each flick of his tongue between her folds.
"Mmph." She gasped, coming undone after what felt like an eternity. Her legs coiled away from the shirtless man who lifted his head with a satisfied grin.
"How did I do?" He sounded so proud of himself.
The woman didn’t answer immediately, instead grabbing a cigar and lighting it up. Only after she’d taken a long puff did she speak. "Not bad... a solid seven out of ten maybe."
The man’s handsome face creased with a frown. "Seven? B–But—"
"I had to guide you on what to do most of the time and yet you couldn’t make me come once in what? An hour?" She scoffed. "Be grateful I didn’t give you a four."
She swerved her head sideways, staring at a tall mirror that gave her a perfect view of her gorgeous face. Her pink lips curved as she gestured at the man to get up.
He did just that, revealing that pretty monster dangling between his muscular thighs. It stood erect, as if ready to make up for its owner’s shortcomings.
Sadly, before they could get the chance to continue with anything—a sharp, throbbing heat spread through the woman’s right arm.
Her brows snapped in a frown before confusion, shock and realisation flickered past her face. She hid her arm under a pillow, turning her gaze back to the hunk before her.
"It’s been fun," she purred. "But I have to attend to something, okay?"
The man’s eyes narrowed with regret. "Is... is it something I did?"
"Nope. Work-related, actually. Just pick up your clothes and leave."
"But I—"
"Melvin?" She slowly stretched out a hand to his chin, pulling him close until her lips brushed against his ear. "Listen to what I say... and go. You love me very much, right?"
Melvin nodded like a loyal puppy. "I–I do. Of course, I do." Then quickly, he hopped off the bed, picked up his clothes littered on the expensive carpets and wore them in a flash.
The woman watched with a plain expression until the moment he walked out of the suite.
A beat of silence passed.
Then—her eyes glowed with a sly light.
"Men." The voice that rolled out of her throat was no longer soft, silvery or feminine. Now it was low, deep and echoed in an almost exhausted way that still sounded absolutely dreamy.
Instantly, the woman receiving mediocre head seconds ago, shifted. In her place was a white male with lean muscles, curly brown hair and almost androgynous features.
He got off the bed lazily, bringing his half-lidded eyes to his right arm. Glowing like a fucking neon sign was a sigil.
One that has only ever activated under his skin once in thirty years.
"Well, I’ll be..." He grinned from ear to ear. "After all these years. The Pantheon is finally getting a reunion."
His eyes slid over the ceiling-to-floor windows that gave a beautiful view of Sin City. "... Looks like there’s something finally interesting afoot."

Back in the prehistoric dimension
’Otherworlder.’
The second that voice echoed in Ambrose’s head, time froze. Literally. The beasts duking it out ahead of him froze like pictures. Sound ceased. The air came to a halt.
Ambrose stood at the centre of this chaos—untouched and utterly disoriented.
Seconds ago, the black mask had been heating up on his face. Now the most immediate threat to him had stopped completely.
"What in the...?" His mouth parted as every breath came out forced. "W–Who are you? You’re the guy I saw wearing this creepy ass mask in that vision, right?"
No response.
His fists balled so hard his knuckles whitened. "Oh, so now you’re silent?" Without thinking twice, he placed some fingers on the mask, ready to pry it off his face.
This time, the mask reacted by burning his fingers the second they touched it. He winced from the pain, surprised at how genuinely hot that felt.
Wasn’t he supposed to be fire and heat-resistant?
"You’ve got such a sharp tongue for someone still barely past the bottom of the barrel." That voice came again.
As it did, Ambrose was hit with a piercing headache that forced him to close his eyes. He gritted his teeth, slowly opening them only to be met with something bone-chilling.
Total darkness stretched as far as the eyes could see.
Ambrose inched back instinctively. ’Aura? Aura, please tell me you’re there.’
Just as he’d feared, the system was unresponsive.
Fuck!
"Benji Foster,"
His blood chilled when that name echoed all around him. He turned back sharply.
And there he was.
Standing several meters ahead was a masked figure covered in a black cloak. The mask mirrored his so well that he suspected it was the same thing.
The Guide bit out his next words cautiously. "Who exactly are you? The creator of the system?" A pause. "W–What? Have I done something to finally upset some higher power and now I—"
"Such a wild imagination too." The masked man chuckled. "It’s no wonder your soul was such a perfect fit. A... replacement. I mean, I should know."
The man raised a hand to his face leisurely. He clamped his fingers around the mask—then pulled it back.
Ambrose felt the world tilt beneath his feet.
Because the person staring back at him...
was an older version of himself.
