Chapter 190: _Escaping Situations He Doesn’t Understand
"What the fuck is happening right now?" Ambrose’s first instinct when he saw the face behind the mysterious masked person was to flee.
However, he’d barely taken two steps back when he realised they were still covered in nothing but pitch blackness. The older him arched an amused brow.
"You sure love escaping situations you can’t understand." The man chuckled, placing his arms behind his back.
The cloak he wore whipped around like dark clouds as he went on. "As long as you use the system. And as long as you keep existing in this world knowing fully well that you should be dead—it’s only a matter of WHEN you discover the whole truth."
Slowly, the man’s voice began fading away.
Ambrose wasn’t having it. "Hey!" He snapped. "If all you were going to do was speak in riddles and appear in my fucking face then you—"
"This was my face long before you, Benji Foster." The guy reminded him quickly of his transmigrator status. "And you want something clear? Fine. Sometime in the future something so catastrophic will happen that not even the system can dig you or the rest of humanity out of it alive."
"I’ve done my part by pulling your soul into this body. By giving you the system far quicker than I ever got it... so whatever happens next? Depends on your own competence."
Instantly, the darkness shattered.
Ambrose’s consciousness was sucked out of the void and brought back to the chaos in the prehistoric dimension. He gasped for breath, barely gaining himself back in time to witness a huge rock hurtling at him.
With a desperate kick into the ground, he rocketed himself backwards, narrowly avoiding the rock’s crash.
[SYSTEM ONLINE.]
[Host’s normal motor coordination seems to be functional again.]
He would’ve loved to say hearing Aura’s voice was relieving. But he didn’t get the chance to think.
BOOM!
Ahead of him, the S-Rank pterodactyl’s battle against the crystalline serpent appeared to have reached a standstill. The former thrashed around viciously as the serpent coiled around its body.
At the same time, within the dust and smoke their battle had wrought, other monsters awakened from the very depths of the valley.
Ambrose’s eyes slid to the system’s survival timer.
[00:35:59.]
It was still a lot of time.
But if the serpent was able to wear out the pterodactyl enough, then maybe he could—
SCREEEKKKKK!
All of a sudden the pterodactyl’s eyes flared with a bright crimson light as it released a gut wrenching scream. The force from it was so powerful that the surrounding ground disintegrated until a deep crater was formed.
Tens of ravines split the earth, snaking toward random directions. The mist and dust shrouding the valley retreated.
Most of all, Ambrose found himself clutching his ears from the piercing pain that followed being exposed to the sound waves.
"Argh—fuck, not again!" He doubled over, backing away as the screech drew on.
In a desperate move, spatial awareness swept around him multi directionally. Although it only gave him two hundred meters of perception, he was able to pick up faint tremors.
Ones that didn’t come from the pterodactyl’s onslaught.
"The long necks!" He could barely hear himself speak but that didn’t matter.
An idea had already taken root in his mind.
Concentrating enough to summon his aether, he blasted blue flames into the ground, boosting himself into the air until he hovered. He wobbled a bit before getting the hang of it.
Like a missile, he bolted toward the direction those foreign tremors had been coming from.
Meanwhile, the pterodactyl stopped its cry the second the serpent’s hold on it loosened. Without a second of hesitation, it struck past its black scales with its sword-like mouth.
Its wings slipped free first. Then the rest of its body. As its massive form soared into the air again, it grabbed the serpent’s head and lifted it alongside it.
Once it was high enough for every creature in the vicinity to see, its talons tightened around the snake before ripping it in half.
The snake’s guts and searing black blood rained on the valley—and upon the beasts that had awakened originally to challenge the pterodactyl.
Most fled instantly.
The others lowered themselves, trying to appear smaller before the apex predator hovering above them.
Then those blazing crimson eyes shifted.
And locked directly on Ambrose.
"Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me." His heart dropped to his ass the second he felt that killing intent crash into him from kilometers away.
SCREEEKKK!
The pterodactyl folded its wings inward before swooping low.
BOOOOM!
A sonic boom erupted behind it so violently that entire cliffs shattered apart. Forests bent sideways. Rocks exploded into dust clouds.
The sheer pressure from its descent flattened smaller creatures against the valley floor like bugs.
"WHY IS IT STILL SO FAST?!" Ambrose yelled while blasting more blue flames beneath his feet.
His body shot through the mist filled valley like a comet. Ravines, boulders and entire trees blurred past him.
Behind him?
Nothing but death approaching at horrifying speed.
Fortunately, he was already close enough.
The long neck beasts emerged through the mist one after another. Massive didn’t even begin to describe them anymore.
Their bodies stretched so high that Ambrose still couldn’t see their heads despite hovering dozens of meters above the ground. Each footsteps flattened hillsides and cracked mountains apart beneath their weight.
And there wasn’t just one.
There were over twenty of them moving in a herd.
"Perfect." Ambrose panted, immediately diving lower.
He landed on one beast’s rough dark hide before using flames to propel himself upward repeatedly. The creature didn’t even notice him climbing its body.
Or maybe it simply couldn’t.
Compared to them Ambrose was smaller than an ant.
He kept ascending until he finally reached the creature’s neck. Wind whipped violently around him from this altitude alone.
Then the screech came again.
This time the herd reacted instantly.
Their mountain sized bodies shifted frantically as they attempted to flee from the incoming pterodactyl. The sheer movement alone made the entire valley quake like an earthquake had struck.
"Now we’re talking." Ambrose grinned beneath the black mask as he stretched out both palms.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Several compressed spheres of blue flames exploded against the valley floor beneath the herd. The detonations only worsened the panic.
The long necks roared thunderously as they stampeded in different directions. Their massive tails whipped wildly around them like moving skyscrapers.
Unfortunately for the pterodactyl? One slammed directly into its side.
The impact actually knocked the S-Rank monster sideways mid flight.
Another tail followed shortly after, smashing against one of its wings hard enough to crack the air around it.
SCREEEEKKK!
The creature shrieked with rage, finally turning its murderous attention toward the herd itself.
"That’s it..." Ambrose narrowed his eyes, crouching lower against the beast beneath him. "Fight amongst yourselves."
The pterodactyl lunged downward viciously, tearing through one long neck’s torso with its blade-like mouth. Black blood sprayed everywhere.
But Ambrose wasn’t watching the carnage anymore.
He was studying it.
Every movement. Every injury.
Then he spotted it.
Right... there!
Along the beast’s left side where the crystalline serpent had constricted it earlier. Several dark cracks spread beneath its scales, leaking black blood steadily.
A weak spot.
Ambrose immediately gathered aether into his palms. Blue flames twisted alongside white frost until both merged violently together.
Burning Ice.
The condensed attack trembled with unstable energy between his fingers. Then he fired it.
FWOOOSH!
The beam tore across the valley and slammed directly into the cracked injury.
For one second nothing happened.
Then—
BOOOOOOM!
Blue flames exploded outward from inside the wound itself while jagged ice spread beneath the pterodactyl’s scales. The creature let out a distorted screech as its body convulsed violently midair.
Its wings faltered.
"Holy shit." Even Ambrose blinked in disbelief.
The pterodactyl crashed straight into the middle of the stampede below.
And the herd didn’t stop moving.
Massive feet trampled over it repeatedly. One after another. The valley shook endlessly beneath the chaos. Dust clouds swallowed everything whole.
By the time they settled... The pterodactyl was still alive.
Barely.
Its body looked mangled beyond belief. One wing bent unnaturally. Black blood flooded the ground beneath it.
Yet those crimson eyes still glowed murderously.
Ambrose swallowed hard. "Yeah... fuck no. I’m not finishing that thing off myself."
As though sensing weakness, the other monsters slowly returned. The same ones that had originally fled earlier.
Now they circled the fallen predator cautiously before lunging one after another.
Claws. Fangs. Acid. Aether blasts.
The pterodactyl screeched endlessly beneath the assault while Ambrose quietly backed away. Soon enough he turned and ran again.
[00:28:03]
He barely made it a few hundred meters before a new notification appeared before him.
[MISSION COMPLETED.]
[Special survival requirement fulfilled.]
[Loading rewards—]
"Stop!" Ambrose barked instantly.
The system froze.
Still breathing hard, he reached into the system storage and brought out the black key again. The mask remained hot against his skin as though reacting to the dimension itself.
"Please work." He muttered, willing it desperately.
Space distorted ahead of him as a door appeared.
Relief nearly made his knees buckle.
Without wasting another second, Ambrose shoved the black key into the lock and pushed the door open. Mist swirled beyond it.
The second he crossed over, the prehistoric valley vanished entirely.
★★★★★
Soft flooring met his boots instead of broken earth.
He was back in his bedroom.
Ambrose barely had time to process returning before spatial awareness swept outward instinctively.
Two familiar presences stood right outside his bedroom door.
"When do we call in a missing person report?" Viktor’s muffled voice sounded from the other end. "He couldn’t have just... vanished."
Suddenly Ambrose remembered he’d disappeared from here while Devon had been coming to get him. And also while he was supposed to be under lockdown.
"... Fuck me sideways..."
