Chapter 149: Bring The Traitor’s Daughter Before the Council
It was nearly two hours into the gathering, as the formal speeches wound down and the hall shifted into a more relaxed rhythm of conversation and drink, when High Elder Aldric raised his hand slightly, and the surrounding conversation quieted almost instantly.
"Before we move fully into the evening’s festivities," Aldric said, his voice carrying easily across the now-attentive hall, "there is a matter the Council wishes addressed. A matter of some age, but one that has never been formally resolved."
Garrett’s expression shifted, a flicker of unease that he quickly smoothed away. "Of course, High Elder. What matter do you refer to?"
Aldric’s gaze moved deliberately toward the Blackwood brothers before returning to Garrett. "The death of Alpha Alaric Blackwood some months past. A death that occurred, as I understand it, due to a betrayal within Shadowmere’s own ranks during an alliance meeting." His voice remained calm, almost conversational, but there was steel beneath it. "The man responsible....Victor Thorne, I believe died during the alliance meeting, but I understand his daughter remains within this pack. Serving, I was told that she had served under a blood debt to the very family her father wronged."
The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees. Lilith, standing near the serving table with an empty tray clutched against her chest, felt every muscle in her body go rigid.
"I would like to see her," Aldric said simply. "The traitor’s daughter. Bring her before the Council."
A ripple of murmurs moved through the gathered nobility. Lilith’s heart slammed against her ribs so hard she thought everyone in the room must be able to hear it. She didn’t move. She couldn’t move. Her feet felt rooted to the floor.
Across the hall, she saw Lucian’s entire body go taut. His shoulders squared, his jaw clenched, and for one terrifying moment his eyes flashed gold beneath the low lighting, a flicker only visible to those close enough and paying attention. His hand curled into a fist at his side.
"Brother."
Nicholas’s voice was quiet, almost lazy in its delivery, but it cut through the tension like a blade. Lucian’s head snapped toward him. Nicholas didn’t look at him directly, his gaze remained fixed politely on the Elders, but the command in that single word was unmistakable.
"Stand down. Now is not the time."
Lilith couldn’t hear the mindlink, but she saw its effect ripple through Lucian’s frame, the way his shoulders dropped fractionally, the way his jaw unclenched by a degree, though his eyes remained hard, fixed, dangerous. He said nothing. He simply stood there, containing something enormous behind a mask that was rapidly fraying at the edges.
Garrett’s composure cracked for just a moment before he forced it back into place. "Of course, High Elder," he said, his voice carefully even. He turned, searching the room, and his eyes found Luke near the side entrance. A small nod passed between them, an instruction requiring no words.
Luke moved quickly, disappearing toward the serving stations. It took him only a moment to find Lilith among the gathered omegas.
"Lilith," he said quietly, his voice apologetic even as he delivered the summons. "The Elders want you brought before them. Now."
Her hands were shaking so badly the tray nearly slipped from her grip. She set it down carefully on the nearest table, forcing her breathing to steady even as every instinct screamed at her to run. She followed Luke through the parting crowd, every eye in the hall turning to track her movement, whispers rising in her wake like a tide she couldn’t outrun.
She stopped a respectful distance from the raised seating, lowering herself into a deep bow, the way she’d been trained her entire life to do before authority. "High Elder," she said, her voice barely above a whisper, though it carried in the silence of the hall. "You summoned me."
Aldric studied her for a long moment, his ancient eyes moving over her with an unreadable expression, not cruel, not kind, simply assessing, the way one might study a puzzle piece that didn’t quite fit the picture being assembled. "Rise," he said.
She straightened slowly, keeping her eyes lowered, her hands clasped tightly in front of her to hide their trembling.
"You are Victor Thorne’s daughter," Aldric said. It wasn’t a question.
"Yes, High Elder."
"And you have served the Blackwood family under blood debt for the crime your father committed against them."
"Yes, High Elder." Her voice remained steady, though everything inside her was screaming.
Aldric was quiet for a moment longer before turning his attention fully toward the three brothers, his expression shifting into something more pointed, more deliberate. "Alpha Nicholas. Alpha Sebastian. Alpha Lucian." He addressed all three, though his gaze moved between them slowly. "Your father’s death was one of the great tragedies to befall the Council in recent memory. Alaric Blackwood was respected by every Elder who sat before me, and his loss was felt across the entire realm." He paused. "I would ask, how has this situation been handled? What has been done to address the debt owed to your family?"
The hall had gone utterly silent. Every eye turned toward the brothers, waiting.
It was Sebastian who stepped forward, his expression composed, his voice carrying the kind of measured calm that had made him so effective in every political maneuver Lilith had witnessed since the brothers’ arrival.
"High Elder," Sebastian began, his tone respectful but firm, "the debt owed to our family has been paid in full. Victor Thorne’s daughter served the terms of her contract with us, sixteen days under our direct service, fulfilling the obligations set forth by us and agreed upon by our family." He paused deliberately, letting the words settle. "The matter, as far as the Blackwood family is concerned, is closed. There is no further debt owed by Shadowmere Pack, nor by this woman, for what occurred in the past."
Aldric’s brow lifted slightly, the first genuine reaction he’d shown all evening. "Closed," he repeated, as though testing the weight of the word. "A debt of this magnitude, the death of an alpha, the collapse of an alliance....settled by sixteen days of service?"
