Chapter 148: The Arrival Of The Supreme Council Of Elders

The carriages rolled to a stop before the main hall. The honor guard dismounted first, forming two neat lines flanking the carriage doors. A long moment of silence stretched over the gathered crowd, the kind of silence reserved for moments when everyone understood the weight of what was about to happen.

Then the doors opened.

The first to emerge was High Elder Aldric, and the entire crowd seemed to inhale as one. He was ancient in the way that only the oldest and most powerful werewolves became ancient, his hair silver-white, his frame lean but unmistakably strong beneath his ceremonial robes, his eyes carrying the weight of centuries. He moved with unhurried authority, each step measured, each glance around the compound assessing and judging.

Behind him came the rest of the Council, five other Elders, each one commanding respect in their own right, each one representing a different region of the werewolf realm. They emerged one by one, their robes marking their rank, their expressions varying between polite neutrality and open scrutiny of their surroundings.

Garrett stepped forward the moment the Elders had fully emerged, bowing low, the deep, formal bow reserved only for the highest authority in their world. "High Elder Aldric. Honored members of the Council. Welcome to Shadowmere."

Aldric’s gaze swept over Garrett, then over the assembled pack, then finally settled on the three brothers standing a short distance away. Something flickered across his weathered face....recognition, perhaps, or calculation. "Alpha Garrett," he said, his voice carrying easily across the courtyard despite its quiet register. "Your hospitality already speaks well of your pack. We received Alpha Nicholas’s correspondence some weeks ago suggesting Shadowmere as this year’s host." His eyes moved deliberately to Nicholas. "I trust his instincts were sound."

Nicholas stepped forward, inclining his head with practiced grace. "High Elder. It is an honor to have the Council grace these grounds." His voice was smooth, controlled, betraying nothing of the calculation Lilith now knew lived beneath every word he spoke. "Shadowmere has prepared extensively for your arrival. I trust you will find everything to your satisfaction."

"We shall see," Aldric said, though there was no hostility in it, only the natural caution of a man who had outlived several generations of ambitious alphas and had learned not to extend trust freely. His gaze lingered on Nicholas a moment longer before shifting to Sebastian and Lucian in turn, offering each brother a small nod of acknowledgment. The Blackwood name alone carried weight here, Lilith could feel it in the way the crowd seemed to hold its breath, in the way even the other visiting alphas kept a respectful distance.

The formal procession into the main hall began, Garrett leading the Elders inside with Nicholas walking just a half-step behind, the positioning itself a quiet display of status. Sebastian and Lucian followed, and behind them came the rest of the gathered nobility....visiting alphas, betas of rank, pack leadership from every territory that had sent representatives to the Summit.

Lilith and the other omegas filed in through the side entrances, taking up their positions along the walls and near the serving stations, ready to attend to whatever was required. She kept her eyes low, her body still, trying to make herself as unremarkable as possible in a room now filled with the most powerful beings in the werewolf realm.

The main hall had been transformed for the occasion. Long tables draped in deep green and gold, Shadowmere’s colors...lined the perimeter, laden with food that had taken the kitchen staff the better part of two days to prepare. At the head of the hall, six ornate chairs had been arranged for the Elders, elevated slightly above the rest of the seating, a subtle architecture of hierarchy built into the very furniture.

Once the Elders were seated and the assembled nobility had taken their places, Garrett rose to address the gathering. His voice, when he spoke, was steady despite the visible tension in his frame.

"Honored Elders, Alphas, and Betas of every pack represented here tonight," he began, "Shadowmere is deeply honored to host this year’s Summit. For generations, our pack has stood as a place of neutral ground and fair dealing, and we hope this gathering reflects that tradition." He paused, glancing briefly toward Nicholas before continuing. "Tonight, we come together not merely to celebrate old alliances, but to forge new understanding between our packs, understanding that will carry us through the difficulties the realm continues to face."

Polite applause rippled through the hall. Aldric inclined his head in acknowledgment, though his expression remained carefully neutral.

"The Council thanks you for your hospitality, Alpha Garrett," Aldric said, rising slightly from his seat, enough to command attention without fully standing. "This gathering exists to strengthen the bonds between our packs, to settle old disputes, and to ensure the peace our ancestors fought to secure continues into the future." His gaze swept the room slowly. "We have much to discuss over these coming days. Alliances to review. Disputes to mediate." His eyes lingered, almost imperceptibly, on the space where Nicholas sat. "And debts to examine."

The words hung in the air a beat longer than they should have. Lilith, standing near the far wall with a tray of wine in her hands, felt something cold slide down her spine, though she couldn’t have said why.

The evening moved forward from there, formal speeches from various pack representatives, toasts to alliances both old and freshly forged, the slow, ceremonial rhythm of politics playing out exactly as it always did. Lilith moved through the room with the other omegas, refilling glasses, clearing plates, keeping her head down and her presence as invisible as possible. She caught glimpses of the brothers throughout, Nicholas engaged in quiet, measured conversation with a visiting alpha from the eastern territories, Sebastian charming a cluster of betas with easy conversation, Lucian standing near the edge of the room, his gold eyes tracking her every movement even as he maintained his composure among the other alphas.
