Chapter 150: The Debt Has Been Paid In Full
"The terms were set and agreed upon by both parties," Sebastian said evenly. "We do not consider it our place, nor the Council’s, to extend punishment beyond what has already been determined and fulfilled. Shadowmere paid what was owed. The matter does not require further examination."
Something in Aldric’s expression shifted, not quite suspicion, but curiosity, the sharp attentiveness of a man who had spent centuries learning to read the spaces between words. His gaze moved from Sebastian to Nicholas, then to Lucian, then finally back to Lilith, who stood frozen beneath the weight of every eye in the room.
"You defend her rather thoroughly for a debt so quickly dismissed," Aldric said quietly.
The silence that followed was suffocating. Lilith felt her pulse hammering in her throat, felt the eyes of the entire hall pressing down on her like physical weight. She didn’t dare look up. She didn’t dare breathe too loudly.
Nicholas’s voice, when it finally came, was calm, unhurried, absolute. "The matter is resolved, High Elder," he said. "We would not have declared it settled otherwise. The Blackwood family does not make such declarations lightly, and we do not appreciate having our word questioned before the Council." There was no heat in his tone, no aggression, only the quiet, immovable certainty of a man who expected to be believed simply because he had spoken.
Aldric held his gaze for a long moment. Something passed between them....an old, wordless negotiation of power and respect that Lilith couldn’t fully understand but could feel pressing against her skin like static. Finally, the High Elder inclined his head, a small concession.
"Very well," Aldric said. "If the Blackwood family considers the debt paid, the Council will not press the matter further." His eyes moved once more to Lilith, lingering there with an expression she couldn’t read. "You may go, girl."
But it was Nicholas who spoke next, his voice cutting smoothly across the moment before Lilith could even process the dismissal. "Lilith." His silver eyes found hers across the hall, calm, controlled, giving away nothing to the watching Elders. "Go on. Return to your duties."
She bowed low, murmuring her thanks, and turned as quickly as decorum allowed, retreating toward the side of the hall where the other omegas stood watching with wide, frightened eyes. Emma reached out the moment she was close enough, gripping her hand tightly, though neither of them dared speak.
Across the room, the tension remained thick, unresolved. Aldric’s gaze lingered a moment longer on the space where Lilith had stood before shifting back to the three brothers, something calculating still working behind his ancient eyes. The other Elders exchanged quiet glances among themselves, murmuring too low for anyone beyond their immediate circle to hear.
Nicholas rose from his seat, and the simple act of it seemed to shift the energy of the entire hall. "High Elders," he said, his voice carrying easily, "the matter has been addressed to the Council’s satisfaction, and I trust we might now return to the purpose of this gathering. There are alliances to discuss, disputes far more pressing than one already settled." His gaze swept the room, a subtle challenge wrapped in perfect diplomatic courtesy. "We don’t have all evening."
For a moment, no one moved. Then Aldric, after a beat that felt far too long, inclined his head in acknowledgment. "Quite right, Alpha Nicholas." He gestured toward the hall at large. "Let us continue."
The tension broke gradually, conversation resuming in careful, subdued tones at first before slowly building back toward its earlier rhythm. Musicians who had paused mid-song resumed playing. Servers who had frozen in place returned to their duties. The machinery of the Summit ground back into motion.
Lilith spent the remainder of the evening moving through the hall in a fog, her hands performing their duties on autopilot while her mind replayed the moment over and over, Aldric’s eyes on her, the suspicion in his voice, the way Sebastian and Nicholas had defended her with such absolute, practiced ease. She caught Lucian’s gaze once more across the room, and even from that distance she could see the effort it took him to remain still, to remain composed.
The formal portion of the evening finally drew to a close as the hour grew late. Garrett rose once more to address the gathered nobility, his voice carrying the practiced cadence of a host bringing an event to its natural end.
"Honored Elders, distinguished guests," he said, "Shadowmere thanks you for gracing us with your presence this evening. Rooms have been prepared in the guest wing for the Council’s rest, and refreshments will be available throughout the night should you require anything further." He gestured toward the side entrance, where several senior betas stood waiting to escort the Elders to their quarters. "We look forward to continuing our discussions tomorrow, and every day the Council remains among us."
Aldric rose slowly, his ancient frame moving with the same unhurried authority he’d carried since his arrival. The other Elders rose alongside him, and the honor guard that had escorted them fell into formation once more, ready to accompany the Council to their rooms.
As Aldric passed through the hall, his gaze found Lilith one final time....brief, unreadable, but lingering just a fraction longer than casual interest would explain. She lowered her eyes immediately, her heart hammering, unable to shake the feeling that whatever had been settled tonight was far from truly finished.
The Elders were escorted from the hall, their formal robes trailing behind them, the honor guard falling into step around them like a moving wall. The doors to the guest wing closed behind them, and the hall exhaled as one, the collective tension of the room finally easing now that the highest authority in the realm had retired for the night.
Lilith remained near the wall, her tray forgotten at her side, watching the space where the Elders had disappeared.
Her mother was still waiting. The visit she’d promised still hung unfinished, pressed to the edges of a night that had already asked far more of her than she thought she had left to give.
