Chapter 1647: 1647. You and Adam Jones are not suitable.

Adam Jones looked at her sharply, probing her inner thoughts with his piercing gaze, almost making Johnson Fefferman unable to hide.

"No, what you want is just to ally with the Jones to safeguard your and your aunt’s status in the Fefferman Family and at Auston."

Johnson’s hand paused in its movements but did not refute.

"Whether in Auston or the Fefferman Family, there’s intense infighting. Are you not confident enough to fight off those Fefferman relatives eyeing Auston?"

Johnson’s face showed a fleeting moment of surprise because of Adam Jones’s words.

"If you’re really not that confident, I’ll make sure your aunt securely holds the position of Head of the Family, and I’ll also help you smoothly take over as the next Head. You don’t need to resort to these minor schemes at all."

Johnson lowered her eyes, stayed silent for a few seconds, then smiled and said:

"Yeah, my mom says the same, but really, what could be more reliable than the bond of marriage? Besides, I naturally like you."

Unfortunately, Adam had long suspected her minor schemes, yet he acted so nonchalantly in front of her.

She didn’t lose unjustifiably, whether it was losing to Adam or to Elly Campbell.

Johnson’s eyes showed a hint of self-deprecation.

Adam wasn’t interested in discussing her feelings for him and merely said:

"Johnson, you’re very smart. You’ve calculated every step to achieve your goals, but unfortunately, you don’t understand me. Even if the Jones truly collapsed, I wouldn’t sell myself out to save them."

He stood up in front of her, "I, Adam Jones, am not so incapable that I can’t make a comeback."

There was a tinge of warning in his eyes, "This time, for the sake of my aunt, if you back down, I’ll pretend nothing happened. Otherwise..."

He paused, "Don’t make things worse for yourself at the critical moment of the Fefferman’s internal strife."

Johnson still smiled, but her face was slightly pale.

She clearly heard the hidden meaning in Adam’s words.

If she insisted on not backing down, the Fefferman Family would truly change hands.

Adam left with a "take care of yourself."

Johnson didn’t chase after him but sat in the private room, lighting another cigarette for herself.

She took a deep drag, her gaze calmly directed out of the window, while the thin veil of smoke obscured her vision and hid the surging emotions in her eyes.

She could no longer distinguish how much of what she did this time was out of dissatisfaction from losing to Elly Campbell or from her years-long assumption of being Adam’s ’lawful wife,’ making her unwilling to give up easily.

She despised doing these sneaky things behind the scenes, yet she did them anyway.

Were those ridiculous flaws exposed because she was too impatient, or did she intentionally expose them to Adam due to her conflicting emotions? She could no longer tell.

You and Adam Jones are not suited for each other.

Suddenly, someone’s words to her flashed through her mind.

At the time, she listened, feeling unconvinced and unwilling, but gradually, over time, she realized that perhaps what that person said was right.

But she refused to admit it, even deceiving herself to deny it all.

As for whether she sincerely wanted to marry Adam, it became less important.

Her thoughts wandered far until a burning sensation spread over her fingers, bringing her back to her senses in pain. Her fingers were blistered by the cigarette.
