Chapter 435: Chapter 435 - Balance(Part 3)
"I wish there was some way to find out exactly what’s going on out there...I don’t particularly like having to take a more reactive approach. If we had more information on what we’re dealing with here, we can prepare ourselves a lot better," I sighed as I paced around restlessly.
"Take a breath and calm yourself, this isn’t going to change anything. But I do know what you mean...perhaps we ought to have set a few teleport points in the Light Continent before we left," Responded Satan thoughtfully.
"Yeah, that’s easy to say in hindsight...but as far as we were concerned, we had no reason to return to the Light Continent after defeating the Vampires and freeing the slaves," I pointed out.
About an hour had passed since that energy wave burst out, we’d set up patrols across our eastern border and alerted the other nations in the Dark Continent, not that we needed to, since it turned out that they’d felt the energy too.
Nothing’s happened since then, we haven’t felt another wave of that energy after the first one, but still, I can’t help but feel on edge about this.
I then glanced to the door as it opened with a slight creak, before Lumena stepped through and shut the door behind her.
"Hey, Larrk, I just got done handing out all the Magic Items I thought would be useful for our patrols, including barriers and detection devices, so-...wow, you look really stressed, you alright?"
"Not really, this whole situation has got my anxiety shooting through the roof...I mean, it’s barely been a week since we dealt with the Vampires," I replied with a strained sigh.
"Yeah, that’s true. I really thought we could expect a prolonged period of peace after that," She nodded wistfully.
"Damn it, if only we’d thought to set a teleport point in the Light Continent...if we had, we could go there and try to find out what’s going on."
"Hm? Uh, I set one. Before we left, I figured I might as well, so I did," She informed me.
Huh?
"Seriously? That’s great! Then, I’ll head over to the Light Continent right away," I responded as I walked over and patted her head appreciatively.
"Sure, I’ll go get the Magic Item. But you still might not find anything...I only set a teleport point in Aotrom City, after all," She pointed out.
"That’s fine, it is in the center of the Light Continent, so I’d say there’s a decent possibility that, if something is going on in the Light Continent, that city has been hit," I surmised optimistically.
"Well, if you say so," Shrugged Lumena, before hurrying off to get the teleportation device.
"Shall I accompany you? It might be risky to go by yourself," Remarked Satan with a frown.
"No, I should be fine on my own. I can take care of myself, and on the off-chance that this is something I can’t handle, you should stay here and assume command if the worst happens," I reasoned after mulling it over.
"Well, that isn’t ominous at all."
"I’m just stating the potential, hypothetical worst case scenario, that’s all," I replied with a wry smile, before the door opened and Lumena returned.
"Here it is, this should take you just outside the castle in Aotrom City," She remarked as she tossed the Magic Item towards me.
"Cool, thanks. Alright, then, see you guys in a bit," I responded as I caught the device.
"Good luck out there," Said Satan, as I actuated the Magic Item and teleported, finding myself in the site of our last battle-...hm?
What’s going on here? It’s eerily quiet, unsettlingly so...
I then extended out my wings and flew up, looking around warily as I reached a high vantage point, before narrowing my eyes as I spotted several bodies scattered about, laying on the ground.
I swooped down towards one of them, landing beside it before my eyes widened slightly...the hell happened here?
This person’s clearly dead, but something isn’t right...I don’t see so much as a single wound on them, they’re completely unscathed.
I turned the body over to double check, and sure enough, there were no injuries on the corpse. I don’t like this...
I then flew around the city, inspecting more of the corpses, and not a single one of them were damaged.
It’s as if they all just dropped dead...no, the way they’re all scattered about, it’s more like they were trying to run away from something.
But what’s most disconcerting is the fact that I haven’t seen a single person who’s still alive, not a soul...seriously, what the actual hell happened here!?
Maybe some kind of deadly virus? No, how would they know to run away from something like that? Plus, there’d be signs of infection if that were the case.
I then began to head back to the castle, flying over the buildings. As the castle came into sight, I began to veer down, before stiffening as a strange figure suddenly appeared, around the same spot where I’d teleported to.
I quickly swooped down and ducked into an alley, hiding in the shadows as I crept closer to the end of the alley, to get a better look at the figure.
What...what the fuck am I looking at?
A tall humanoid figure that was entirely white with a glow to it, it had glowing blue slots for eyes, but no mouth, ears or nose. What-...?
"We need to get out of here, NOW!!! I don’t know what that thing is, but I’ve never felt such an instinctive fear before! You have to leave! Immediately!" Azazel exclaimed urgently in my head, startling me.
I immediately did as he said, taking out the teleportation device and activating it, freezing as the figure rapidly turned its gaze this way as I ran my Mana through it, before I teleported back to Arcadia.
"Hm? Oh, that was fast, did you find anything-...?" Began Satan, before trailing off as he got a look at my expression, "What’s wrong? What happened out there? What did you see?"
"I...I’m not entirely sure."
