Chapter 98: Deities & Demonic Towers

Caelum wore a thoughtful expression after hearing Marirose’s explanation.

’Why was the moon originally incomplete?’ he wondered.

For some reason, that question continued to linger in his mind.

Unfortunately, before he could think further about it, the tour continued.

Afterward, they visited another temple.

Then another.

And another.

The Summoning Goddess, the God of Agriculture, the Golden God, the Goddess of Justice, the God of Judgment, the God of Storms, God of Architecture and Craft, the Goddess of Beauty and Love, the God of Lightning, the God of Death, Goddess of Life and many more...

By the end of it, Caelum genuinely could not tell whether he was attending a prestigious school or touring a grand exhibition dedicated to gods and goddesses.

Even the students looked exhausted from the sheer amount of information being thrown at them.

Eventually, after what felt like an eternity, the group finally returned to the open area outside.

By that point, most of the other student groups had already finished their tours and were beginning to leave.

The three other nuns also arrived nearby.

"Ha! You’re still not finished?" Brittney said smugly while folding her arms beneath her chest, the effect was great (?).

"As expected, Justice is always slow!"

The sight immediately drew attention.

After all, Brittney was a follower of the Goddess of Beauty and Love and David Nun was a follower of the Goddess of Justice.

And since they both were childhood friends, the two rarely missed an opportunity to annoy each other.

The silent nun remained silent as always.

Meanwhile, the older nun, Gisila, simply sighed before looking toward David.

"Did you at least tell them about the Deities and the Demons?"

"I was literally about to explain it before she interrupted me!" David Nun complained while pointing accusingly toward Brittney.

"Finish quickly, We have another batch arriving soon." Gisila replied calmly.

After saying that, the three departed.

"Hmph!" David Nun snorted before turning back toward the exhausted children.

"Alright!"

She clapped her hands loudly.

"I believe most of you have already grasped the basics."

Several students nodded weakly.

"Good, then let me tell you something more important."

Unfortunately, she did not give them any opportunity to refuse.

"So, most people believe that the gods and goddesses reside within Heaven only, however, they are not the only divine beings that exist."

She paused briefly.

"There are also beings known as Deities who possess only small spheres of influence and some are barely known at all, but regardless of their fame, they are still categorized as Divine Beings."

The students listened attentively.

"Unlike many gods, numerous deities reside on this land. And naturally, if gods can influence the world..."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Then what about demons?"

Nobody responded.

Nobody nodded.

Nobody looked particularly interested.

It almost seemed as if David Nun was asking the question to herself.

A vein bulged on her forehead.

These children were simply too unenthusiastic and difficult.

Still, she had a job to do.

Just then, an elderly priest happened to walk past nearby.

Seeing David Nun’s expression, he appeared to understand the situation immediately.

Without saying a word, he raised his staff.

Then he softly recited an incantation.

Tiny droplets of water condensed above the tip of his staff.

"[Holy Refresh]."

The droplets scattered outward and lightly landed on each student’s forehead.

Instantly, their minds became noticeably clearer.

The lingering fatigue disappeared, their attention sharpened.

The old priest then gave David Nun a thumbs-up before quietly walking away.

Like a mysterious old man who had completed his purpose and vanished.

Caelum stared blankly at the retreating figure.

’What the hell did I just witness?’

Still, he had to admit, his mind felt remarkably refreshed.

David Nun cleared her throat, appreciating the Old priest.

"As I was saying... just as gods possess influence over the world, demons possess influence as well."

Her expression became slightly more serious.

"However, due to certain restrictions, they cannot freely descend and cause chaos among humanity themselves."

She paused deliberately for dramatic effect.

"So instead they created a systematic weapon designed to destroy civilizations, and those weapons are known as..."

The students immediately became interested.

David Nun smiled.

"Demonic Towers."

***

According to David Nun’s explanation, Demonic Towers were exactly what their name suggested.

Towers established by Demon Kings who sought to extend their influence into the world of Lyron.

However, unlike the terrifying stories told to children, demons could not simply descend upon the Earthly Plane and begin conquering kingdoms, like visiting a neighboring country.

Demons were beings of chaos, disorder, temptation, and destruction.

Yet despite their power, they were restricted by the laws governing the world.

The Earthly Plane rejected them.

It rejected the gods as well.

Its natural order resisted their direct entry.

As a result, the Demons sought another path, different from the Gods.

By exploiting the principles of causality and the world’s own laws, they established the Demonic Towers, because they could not always wait for a Human to summon them.

And the Towers were massive structures that served as bridges and anchors through which their influence could seep into human world.

Naturally, such a system required participants.

No sane person would willingly enter a place overflowing with danger and death without receiving something in return.

Thus, the towers were made fair and rewards were offered.

Ancient inheritances.

Rare treasures.

Lost techniques.

Powerful artifacts.

Resources capable of changing the fate of a normal person.

The brave entered seeking glory.

The ambitious entered seeking power.

And every time someone climbed a tower, the influence of its ruling Demon King spread a little further into the world.

At the same time, the towers also acted as footholds for demonic activity within the Earthly Plane.

Places where demons could exert their will despite the restrictions placed upon them.

David Nun further explained that demon worshippers and cultists were not necessarily connected to the towers themselves.

Many acted independently.

Some worshipped powerful demons in exchange for forbidden knowledge.

Some sought power at any cost.

Others simply wished to watch the world descend into ruin.

Even among demons, unity was a rare thing.

The Demon Kings fought among themselves.

Their followers clashed.

Entire demonic factions waged wars against one another in the shadows.

Betrayal, conquest, and ambition existed just as much among demons as they did among mortals.

And so the duty of the gods, goddesses, churches, and divine organizations was not merely to spread faith.

Their task was to oppose demonic influence wherever it appeared.

To guide heroes.

To raise saints.

To destroy Demonic Towers.

To ensure that the influence of chaos never overwhelmed the world.

The explanation sounded simple enough.

A battle between good and evil.

Light and Darkness.

Order against chaos.

Gods against Demons.

Most of the students listened with shining eyes.

A few were already imagining themselves as legendary heroes standing atop collapsing towers.

Yet, Caelum remained silent.

His blue eyes narrowed slightly as he stared into the distance.

Something was wrong and not necessarily with the explanation itself.

But with the overall picture.

The more he thought about it, the more distorted the picture became.

The Demonic Towers provided resources and opportunities.

They provided inheritances capable of producing powerful heroes.

They attracted countless adventurers who willingly entered them.

And in the end, those same towers were destroyed by the very people who benefited from them.

Meanwhile, the churches gained prestige.

The gods gained followers.

The heroes gained fame.

Everyone seemed to profit from the existence of the towers.

Everyone except the demons themselves.

A faint frown appeared on Caelum’s face.

’That doesn’t make sense.’

Even in his previous life, he had learned a simple truth.

No one contributed towards their own loss.

Especially not beings powerful enough to be called Demon Kings.

Either the demons were far more foolish than the stories claimed.

Or, this was not the truth.

And for the first time since arriving at the Holy Grounds, Caelum felt that he had glimpsed a tiny piece of something far larger lurking behind the history of the world.

Or maybe, the world itself.
