Chapter 114: A Bad Situation
The moment they crossed the doorway, something slammed violently into the barrier Skyler was maintaining.
KRUURRK—!
A mind-shaking screech echoed throughout the room
The sound wasn’t merely physical, it directly assaulted the mind.
Everyone except Caelum, Jojo, and Bonjour immediately felt a strange drowsiness wash over them, as though something was trying to drag their consciousness into sleep.
"YAAAH! Ghosts! Ghosts!" Paul screamed.
In panic, he began wildly waving his hands in the air as though trying to physically fight the invisible attack.
His reaction almost made Caelum laugh.
The barrier surrounding the group weakened for a moment.
That was all the opportunity the attackers needed.
Two shadowy figures rushed toward them.
Their bodies appeared translucent and distorted, resembling masses of black mist vaguely shaped like humans.
One of the specters charged directly at Caelum, attempting to phase through his body.
Bang!
The creature suddenly stumbled backward.
It was as though it had crashed into an invisible wall.
The specter let out a confused screech.
Meanwhile, the second specter targeted Skyler.
The divine energy surrounding him had apparently marked him as the greatest threat.
Skyler was slightly startled by the sudden attack as golden divine power erupted from his body.
The specter immediately released another ear-piercing shriek.
The surrounding divine barrier fluctuated violently but before the creature could get any closer, Jojo moved.
The panda appeared behind Skyler almost instantly as purple energy wrapped around his fists.
The force rotated violently around his arms, producing a low humming sound.
Then he punched.
BOOM!
The specter was sent flying.
Its body crashed into a distant wall before sinking halfway into it.
On the other hand, Caelum had already grabbed the other specter by the neck as the creature struggled wildly.
"Jojo, do you know what these things are?" Caelum asked.
"Do you expect me to know everything?" Jojo replied.
Caelum ignored the panda’s tone as his eyes carefully studied the creature.
The energy within its body felt strange.
’This is somewhat similar to Yin Energy...’ he thought.
Though the nature was different but the feeling was surprisingly familiar.
Without hesitation, flames erupted from his palm.
The specter released a distorted scream as fire rapidly consumed its body.
Within moments, nothing remained except ashes.
Caelum’s expression didn’t change.
These creatures had attacked first and he had no intention of showing mercy.
The remaining specter saw its companion perish.
Its distorted face twisted with rage as it lunged at Caelum.
Unfortunately, its fate was no different.
Fire erupted once again.
A few moments later, the second specter also disappeared.
Caelum briefly reflected on the encounter.
’They’re weak.’
The creatures were unable to properly utilize the energy within their bodies.
At most, they were comparable to Lesser Beasts or First Circle Mages.
Perhaps even weaker.
Then something unexpected happened.
A door suddenly materialized in front of them.
No one had seen it appear.
It simply existed now.
The group exchanged glances.
Unfortunately, remaining in place didn’t seem like a better option.
Eventually, everyone nodded.
One after another, they stepped through the mysterious doorway.
The moment they emerged on the other side, everyone froze.
The room looked nearly identical. The only difference was that it was slightly larger.
And instead of two specters.
There were four waiting for them.
***
’This is getting bad...’ Caelum thought as he stared at the thirty-two specters surrounding them.
This was already the fifth room.
Every time they cleared one, a door would appear.
Every time they crossed that door, the room would become larger and the number of specters doubled.
What started as two specters had now become thirty-two.
If this continued much longer, even they would eventually be overwhelmed.
Caelum, Bonjour, Skyler, Jojo, and Sénior formed the main fighting force.
Ryan stayed near the rear, protecting Paul and Voomie while providing support whenever possible.
’It’s like we’re trapped inside a box,’ Caelum thought.
Just then, several ghostly chains shot toward him and attempted to wrap around his limbs.
However, Caelum simply grabbed the chains with brute force.
The specter controlling them visibly froze as Caelum pulled them.
The unfortunate ghost was dragged through the air and a moment later, he smashed it into the floor.
BOOM!
The specter’s body distorted before dispersing into smoke.
Nearby, Bonjour was swinging his fists relentlessly as arder covered his entire body like armor.
Every punch created a shockwave capable of scattering specters.
Sénior stood further behind.
Unlike the others, he wasn’t engaging directly.
Instead, he continuously chanted strange spells.
Whenever one of those spells landed, a specter would instantly disintegrate.
Jojo’s fighting style was even more surprising.
The panda fought entirely with his bare hands.
Even Caelum had to admit the panda was clearly a martial arts master.
Ryan was also performing well.
His sword flashed repeatedly as he protected the rear line.
The old man inside his sword occasionally gave instructions, allowing him to react far beyond what a child his age should be capable of.
The only true weak links were Paul and Voomie.
Paul was absolutely terrified of ghosts.
His glasses flashed constantly as he cast support spells, but every time a specter got close, he nearly screamed.
As for Voomie...
The fat dog had completely abandoned any intention of fighting.
She was currently hiding behind Paul.
A situation that greatly damaged her dignity.
"WOOF! PROTECT ME!"
"You should protect us!" Paul shouted.
Eventually, the final specter was defeated as Its body dissolved into black smoke.
Afterward, the familiar door appeared as everyone looked at it.
Nobody was happy to see it again.
"This time, Caelum, can you enter alone?" Jojo suddenly asked.
The panda’s eyes were shining with thought as he had finally noticed something.
Caelum nodded.
"I was thinking the same thing."
"I’m coming too." Bonjour frowned.
"No," Jojo replied immediately.
Bonjour wanted to argue but Jojo’s gave an absurd logic that he was unable to argue against.
After a few moments, he reluctantly backed down.
"NOOOO! I DON’T WANT TO GO!"
Voomie screamed as Caelum ignored her protests.
Grabbing the fat dog under one arm, he dragged her toward the door.
"WOOF! OWNER, THIS IS OPPRESSION!"
Then the two crossed through the doorway and the remaining group stayed where they were.
Several moments passed, then the surrounding space distorted.
The room expanded as the walls stretched outward.
The air trembled and behind them, a new door materialized.
Creak!
Caelum stepped out carrying a miserable Voomie.
The moment he appeared, sixty-four specters materialized throughout the room.
"As expected!" Jojo exclaimed, his eyes widening in realization.
"This is a closed-loop space! I should have realized it sooner!"
The others looked at him.
"What does that mean?" Ryan asked.
"It means we’re not progressing at all! Every door simply loops us back into the same space while increasing the difficulty."
The realization caused everyone’s expressions to darken.
They had been fighting for so long only to discover they hadn’t advanced a single step.
"The solution is simple yet difficult and for that..." A grin appeared on his face.
"So we’re going to destroy the entire thing."
"I can do that."
Without waiting for approval, Arder erupted from Bonjour’s body.
The barbarian’s aura surged to its absolute limit.
The floor beneath his feet began cracking before he even moved.
He stomped.
BOOM!
The entire room shook violently as cracks spread across the floor like spiderwebs and walls trembled.
Paul nearly fell over grabbing onto Ryan for support.
"WE’RE STANDING ON THE GROUND TOO!"
The others stumbled as well.
Meanwhile, Bonjour stared at the widening cracks with satisfaction.
He should had taken this approach from the start, after all he is a Barbarian, not a human.
