Chapter 113: Title Effects
"Meow~"
A small cat suddenly appeared in front of them.
At first glance, it looked harmless.
However, the ghostly energy surrounding its body immediately revealed that it was anything but an ordinary cat.
The creature possessed a small skull-like exoskeleton covering part of its head, while pale ghostly flames flickered within its eye sockets.
"A baby Catarat? How unusual..." Jojo muttered observing the creature carefully.
"It’s not particularly dangerous but Catarats only appear in places where someone prosperous or important has died."
The group’s expressions immediately changed.
"That’s not comforting," Paul muttered as Jojo nodded.
"If one is present here, then this place may be something akin to a graveyard."
Still, the baby Catarat didn’t seem hostile, it simply stared at them.
Jojo eventually waved his hand.
"Ignore it and continue moving, a creature like this isn’t worth our attention."
The group nodded and resumed walking.
However, after several minutes, Jojo frowned as the Catarat was still following them.
That was strange.
Creatures like Catarats rarely approached the living, yet this one stubbornly remained nearby.
"Wait..."
Ryan suddenly spoke. His expression was odd.
"Why do I feel like that cat keeps looking at you, Caelum?"
In reality, he was repeating what the old man inside his sword had just told him.
Everyone immediately turned toward Caelum.
"What?"
Caelum looked confused.
Then he looked at the cat as the cat looked back.
Their gazes met.
For some reason, Caelum immediately understood something.
The feeling was difficult to explain.
The Catarat’s eyes resembled those of a loyal subordinate awaiting instructions from its leader.
"..."
Even Caelum found that absurd.
The group halted as Caelum approached the little ghost cat.
Then he crouched down.
"Do you know this place?" he asked and to everyone’s surprise the cat responded.
"Meow!"
Caelum blinked.
The cat blinked back.
"...Then can you show us the way?"
"Meow!"
The Catarat instantly nodded.
Or at least, it performed something that looked very close to a nod.
Then, before anyone could react, its legs dissolved into smoke.
Using an almost sliding motion, it floated through the air and positioned itself directly on Caelum’s shoulder.
The group froze.
"..."
"Woof!"
Voomie barked as the fat dog looked furious.
Her body rapidly shrank until she became roughly the same size as the ghost cat.
Then she jumped onto Caelum’s other shoulder.
Both creatures stared at each other.
An invisible battle seemed to begin.
Somehow, Voomie felt her position was being threatened.
Caelum ignored the silent war and instead opened a familiar system panel.
A particular title appeared before him.
[Baby Aura Farmer: You aura farmed as a baby, babies of myriad races see you as their leader.]
"..."
Caelum stared at the title.
’I don’t know why this is happening...’ He hadn’t expected the effect to be this absurd.
Apparently, the title didn’t discriminate between races.
It even worked on ghostly creatures.
Shaking his head, Caelum closed the interface.
With the Catarat acting as their guide, the group continued deeper into the forest.
As they traveled, Caelum constantly felt eyes watching them.
Countless eyes, some cold some curious.
The sensation came from all directions.
Yet whenever anyone turned to investigate, nothing was there.
The observers would vanish as though they had never existed.
Not a single creature revealed itself.
The forest remained eerily silent.
At some point, Caelum also warned Voomie.
"If you keep bullying the baby cat, I’ll only feed you vegetables."
The threat was so devastating as Voomie immediately behaved.
At least externally.
Eventually, after nearly another hour of travel, the trees began to thin as then the group finally saw it.
A massive black mansion standing alone in the middle of the forest.
The building looked ancient.
Dark towers rose toward the green sky, black stone walls stretched outward like a fortress. Sharp windows and elaborate decorations covered its exterior.
An oppressive atmosphere radiated from every corner of the structure.
Caelum stared at it for several moments as the architecture looked familiar.
In fact, he could only describe it as the pinnacle of Gothic architecture.
Back on Earth, during a brief period in the years after the B.C.E (Before Cosmos Era), an entire cultural movement had exploded into popularity.
Clothing, Buildings, Literature, Art and even people’s tastes.
Everything had changed so drastically that it was as a social anomaly.
Eventually, investigators discovered that most of the movement’s influence could be traced back to a single individual.
A person who manipulated the public to establish the Gothic culture for his personal appeasement.
His name was...
***
Creak—!
Caelum pushed open the massive iron gates as the group cautiously stepped inside.
A long stone path stretched from the entrance all the way to the mansion.
On both sides of the path stood countless graves.
What disturbed Caelum even more was the ghostly energy radiating from nearly every tomb.
Thin streams of energy drifted through the air like invisible mist.
This wasn’t merely a cemetery.
It was a place where the dead truly lingered.
The group unconsciously moved closer together.
Then the baby Catarat suddenly jumped from Caelum’s shoulder.
"Meow~" The little ghost cat stretched lazily letting out a yawn.
Then, before anyone could react, it floated toward a nearby tomb and its body dissolved into smoke.
The next moment, it disappeared straight through the gravestone as though it had never existed.
Apparently, it had gone to sleep.
"..."
A strange silence descended upon the group as nobody knew what to say.
Eventually, they continued forward.
The mansion doors towered above them.
Dark wood, black metal and unknown carvings.
Everything about the structure screamed mystery.
"It doesn’t have an owner’s name," Paul suddenly pointed out.
Sure enough, there was no family crest, no identification whatsoever.
It was as though the mansion didn’t belong to anyone.
Caelum narrowed his eyes.
Earlier, he had extended his Spirit Sense toward the building.
The moment his Spirit Sense touched the mansion doors, he felt something he couldn’t properly describe.
It felt more like something had looked back at him.
The sensation lasted only an instant.
"Skyler, keep your divine power active. Everyone else, stay alert."
The group immediately nodded.
Golden light radiated from Skyler’s body as he reinforced the barrier around them.
Meanwhile, Caelum drew his sword as Blue sword Qi flowed along the blade.
The faint glow illuminated the darkness surrounding them.
The others also prepared themselves.
Only Jojo maintained a thoughtful expression while observing the mansion.
After confirming everyone was ready, Caelum stepped forward.
Creeeak-!
