Chapter 8: Promises

Black Horizon is one of the biggest guilds in the world. A behemoth, as well as part of the Big 6 guilds. It wasn’t a name she had never heard of; she had even been approached by them the earliest.

She lifted her head and stared at his face, yet didn’t ask anything.

"Ok."

"Won’t you ask why?"

"Why would I? I have full faith in you. You must have had a reason for that," she said it so naturally that it kind of felt wrong.

"Well, you aren’t wrong, I do have a reason for that. There is a hierarchy even among the top 6 guilds."

There are 6 S-rank guilds in this world, the strongest in the world, but not every guild can be an S-rank.

You need to possess an Ultimate Skill to be considered an S-ranker, but having a single S-ranker in the guild doesn’t make it an S-rank guild. A guild must have 10 S-rankers to be considered an S-rank guild.

Throughout the world, there are only 6 guilds that have managed that. This condition makes it the hardest to form another guild of the same rank. Not all S-rankers will be willing to work under someone else, and this very reason makes those 6 monsters from those guilds even more terrifying.

They were able to have multiple people under them. That in itself shows just how powerful they are. However, nothing in this world is truly equal. There is a clear hierarchy even among those 6 guilds.

Among those 6, Black Horizon is the one with the most number of hunters, most number of resources, most number of S-rankers and A-rankers, as well as the ones who reached the 40th floor the earliest. The guild leader of Black Horizon is also the strongest hunter in this world, someone who is close to Level 80.

She is also one of the few who was able to awaken an unidentified mana pool and someone who actually holds 2 Ultimate Skills. It was only because of her that the Black Horizon guild was able to take in 17 S-rank hunters till now.

These were just a few things related to the top guild of this world. Their true strength is even greater.

"The guild leader of Black Horizon is the strongest hunter in the world. I want you to stay under her and grow your strength."

There is not much time left for him. If he delays again, then the outcome of this world and their fate will be the same as before.

"What do you mean?"

"I will be going somewhere for a while. It could take me months or even a year. I want you to stay with her till then and grow stronger."

She readily agreed to everything he said till now, but the mention of him going away filled her heart with dread. There hasn’t even been a day she has lived without him after they met. He was the only friend and family she had left. Even when he said he would return, the thought of being away from him made her scared.

With a trembling hand, she grabbed the fabric of his shirt and said, "Where? I will go with you. Don’t lea-"

Sensing her fear, Ethan wrapped his arms around her tiny body and pulled her into his embrace.

"Don’t worry, I will be back as soon as I get what I am looking for, I promise. I won’t make you wait long for that. You remember what we promised, right?"

With his reassurance, Eleanor calmed down and hummed softly, "Umm."

"We will destroy the tower."

Both spoke at the same time, in unison.

A promise that they made with each other, a promise that brought them together.

"You already awakened, so let me get something to stand beside you. I can’t be the one to break our promise now, can I?"

"You will come back, right?"

"I will. Can you promise me one more thing, Ellie?" Ethan asked.

"What?"

"Do not wait for me and climb the tower. I want you to become an S-rank hunter by the time I come back. Can you do that?"

It was almost an impossible thing he was asking for. Becoming an S-rank hunter is already a rare thing, but to become one in a year at most? It was absurd.

And yet he asked for that. He knew if there was someone who could do it, then it was Eleanor. There are geniuses who have awakened an unidentified mana pool; they are in a different league than others. But even among them there is a difference, like the leader of Black Horizon. Not everyone can have 2 Ultimate Skills.

However, there was one thing even more unbelievable. This seemingly sweet and timid girl became the Frozen Empress in the future, the one who alone climbed to the 40th floor and completed that stage in just 2 years.

She was a nightmare for monsters.

’Till the end, I wasn’t able to figure out why she was unable to clear the 50th floor. With her strength and the pace at which she cleared the floors one after another, she should have cleared even Floor 50.’

"I will," Eleanor agreed without hesitation. "Umm... can you promise me something too?"

She added after a short pause while tightening her arms around him.

Ethan clearly felt it but did not say anything and only stared at her.

"If I really become an S-rank hunter by the time you return, will you promise to do one thing for me?" Her tone shifted a little when she asked that, and even her breathing seemed to become heavy. She lifted her chin and looked at his face again. Unlike before, there was a different glint in her eyes this time.

Ethan, however, didn’t think too much and agreed to it.

"I will."
