Chapter 7: Believe in me

Eleanor watched his back as he stared at the sky,

’He must be feeling down because of that... how do I even cheer him up? Ahhh... I don’t know what to do at all.’

Still, she couldn’t just stand still doing nothing while he was breaking down, so she decided to do everything she could.

"Ethan..." she softly called his name while slowly moving towards him. "I know it’s hard, but don’t stay silent."

Getting just an inch away from him, she rested her head on his back. Her voice was breaking even though she hardened herself. She did not even have the joy of becoming an awakened.

"I can’t watch you like this. It doesn’t matter even if you didn’t awaken... I will find a way for you. The tower..."

"You don’t have to, Eleanor."

He didn’t let her complete her words and said calmly. The last thing he wanted from her in this life was to throw away her life in pursuit of finding something that could help him. Not anymore. Not again.

"No. I am sure there is something we can do."

Her tone became firm and a bit louder. She wasn’t screaming, but it was close to it. Even now, she believed that he had given up and was telling her not to force herself, which definitely wasn’t the case here.

Ethan turned around and cupped Eleanor’s face, calming down her agitated state. He did not speak for a second and looked deeply at this foolish woman before him.

’I really was an idiot back then, wasn’t I?’

He shook his head at his own foolishness and stared at her eyes once again. Those pair of beautiful blue eyes were staring back at him. Not a hint of malice nor disdain was in those eyes. The only thing that resided there was deep care and love for him.

Unexpectedly, a small smile bloomed on his face. For a moment, he forgot all about the doom that was going to befall this world. It was as if all that future was a mere illusion and this moment was the only beautiful reality there.

It would be a lie to say he wasn’t skeptical about this being an illusion, but if this illusion could give him a chance to make up for his mistakes, then he was more than willing to take it.

"Don’t push yourself like that. I already know I am manaless. There is nothing that can be done about this."

"But..."

"No but, I have accepted it already, so don’t worry about it anymore. You should be happy instead, you will become a star now. The new rising talent."

He was looking forward to changing her gloomy mood, but even with that, it didn’t seem to work. Her eyes moved down. No matter what, she couldn’t be happy at all.

"Or what? You don’t plan on ignoring me from now on, do you?"

Seeing that his normal tactics weren’t working, he decided to tease her a little.

"No. I will never." Eleanor instantly refuted. Even the thought of that never crossed her mind.

Ethan chuckled lightly at her response, one which he had forgotten how to do. Cupping her face while squeezing her cheeks, he said, "Then don’t worry so much. It doesn’t matter which one of us awakens, our end goal will remain the same. Besides, I am more than willing to live off your money."

Eleanor blushed softly. In a way, he was confessing his feelings to her. Not directly, but anyone with a mind could figure that much out.

Not that she hated that at all, but it was kind of sudden. Even his actions before were sudden. She hadn’t forgotten that at all.

’He... changed.’

Someone else might not notice this, but she couldn’t ignore it. Till now, he had never shown his affection openly. As a matter of fact, it was mostly from her side, but now...

She didn’t mind. Moreover, she closed the gap between them and rested her head on his chest.

"Did something happen?" she asked.

Ethan immediately understood what she meant by that. After what he did, it was natural for her to ask this.

"Nothing happened. Everything is alright. Do you believe in me?" he responded gently.

It wasn’t that he was unwilling to tell her, but right now, when he himself wasn’t sure of his state and this reality... he couldn’t do that.

Eleanor nodded her head without moving from her position. There was no doubt in her mind.

Ethan smiled softly and said, "Thank you."

Eleanor opened her eyes. She did have faith in him, but couldn’t stop her fragile heart from worrying about him.

’Will you tell me in the future?’ she asked him in her heart but didn’t voice it out. She was sure that he would tell her when the time felt right.

’Forgive me, I wish to tell you everything that happened, but now is not the right time. For now... I need to prepare for the future and retrieve that sword.’

"Ellie." Ethan softly called her.

"Hmm." She hummed without lifting her head.

"I want you to join the Black Horizon Guild."
