Chapter 14: Burden of the strongest

"What? So you are interested in him so that you can use him as a target for your assassination? That’s new."

Lucian couldn’t help but be baffled by this, and it wasn’t wrong to say he wasn’t alone on this.

"Well... let me clarify if he was serious or not about going to the Abyss for now. You can try it after that, but do tell him about this first." Aurora said, shaking her head inwardly.

"If that is all, then I would like to take my leave first," Adrian said, and disappeared from there.

"I need to raid a rift. See you all later." Lucain took his leave as well.

Following him was Magnus, who disappeared right after.

Nyra looked at Aurora once and then glanced at the door behind her as she left that place.

"You are here late. What is it, Seraphina?" Aurora asked, not surprised that she stayed even after everyone else was gone.

"I saw something in him. It wasn’t mana at all." Sarah opened her mouth after a moment of silence.

"I first thought I was thinking too much, that it might be nothing. But... when I tried to probe him just now after what Nyra said... all of my spirits didn’t dare go near him."

As she began to explain what she found, her throat dried up.

This was the first time she had ever seen her spirits get scared of something. They did not falter even when facing monsters far stronger than they were, but here? They were terrified to even go near him.

"Are you telling me that he is that powerful?" Aurora raised her brows, getting serious.

"No. He isn’t. Nyra won’t lie to us. He is weak, but maybe it is what he awakened that makes him so terrifying."

"Rodrek mentioned that he was unawakened, no mana, no affinity. But he did say there was a strange fear he felt when he faced that boy. I knew he wouldn’t be wrong. There are still things we don’t know about the world stones and the mysterious powers we hold."

"Even then, I don’t think he will turn his back on us."

"I don’t think so either. But from what I see right now, he doesn’t care about anyone other than Eleanor. Don’t worry about that, Seraphina. I will keep that in mind. Focus on yourself, we do not have much time left now."

Seraphina nodded her head and left the scene.

Aurora didn’t call for Ethan and Eleanor immediately; instead, she looked at the timer in the tower.

’So many mysteries but no answers... am I even capable of saving everyone?’

Being the strongest in this world wasn’t never the privilege but a burden.

Carrying the hope of the world on her shoulders is probably the most burdensome thing ever.

Whenever people looked at her with admiration and inspiration, hoping to become someone like her one day, it was one of her biggest fears.

"How good would it be if I were never in this position?"

It wasn’t that she didn’t want anyone to have power as great as hers. It’s actually the opposite, she wanted everyone to have the strength, but not the responsibility of being everyone’s protector.

"With great power comes great responsibility... what a fascinating thing to say. What if the responsibility is far greater than the power they hold?"

Anyone else can lose, they can give up, they have that privilege, but not her.

She can never lose.

"Ah~ the view sure is great from here."

Her serious expression disappeared in an instant as if it was natural for her, getting back to her usual happy-go-lucky mood.

"You two can come out now." She said softly, using mana so her voice would reach both of them.

Ethan opened the door as soon as he heard her voice and walked onto the roof with Eleanor by his side.

As he had expected, Aurora was the one standing there alone.

’I was expecting a fight, but I guess that didn’t happen.’

"I assume you will be taking her?" He still asked to confirm.

"As it was supposed to happen. Do you not like this?"

"I don’t have any opinion. So when am I leaving?" He directly asked her.

Eleanor gently tucked his jacket on, still afraid of what he was about to do.

He had explained why he wanted to go there to Eleanor just now.

Even though she didn’t stop him from his decision, she couldn’t help herself.

"Before that, are you sure you want to go there? You are an unawakened, though I know you are hiding something, and I won’t ask what it is, but do tell me if you want. You are a normal human, hundreds of S-rank hunters have died there, so are you sure you really wish to go there?"

"I have to." Ethan was firm in his decision.

He would have thought otherwise if that place were unconquerable. Eleanor found the sword there in his past life.

Even though he is nowhere near her strength, he needs to do it.

He has to go there.

"Alright, fine. I will arrange another hunter for you, so you won’t die there. When do you want to go?"

"Right now."
