Chapter 526: Chapter 526: Loving Father
Melody Summers opened the door, and Zoe Kane walked in, helping a limping Caleb Summers.
As soon as they entered the living room, Caleb Summers couldn’t wait to put on the facade of a loving father. He spoke softly to Nina Summers, "My dear daughter, Daddy knows you’ve had a hard time lately. It’s all my fault. I came specially to take you home today."
Sitting on the sofa, Nina Summers looked up at his words. Seeing Caleb Summers and Zoe Kane walk in arm in arm, she instinctively gave a huge eye-roll.
’Seeing this first thing in the morning... What awful luck!’
’Who wants to watch a middle-aged cheater and his mistress showing off their affection arm in arm?!’
Caleb Summers felt a bit awkward at her reaction. He knew Nina Summers didn’t like Zoe Kane, so he had originally planned to come alone today.
But he didn’t know what was wrong with him. Lately, he’d been having constant headaches and dizzy spells, feeling as if worms were crawling inside his brain. He was so unsteady after getting up this morning that he could barely walk, so he had no choice but to let Zoe Kane accompany him.
Caleb Summers rubbed his throbbing forehead, walked over to Nina Summers, and said with a benevolent expression, "Alright, Nina, it’s been many days. You’ve thrown your fit long enough, haven’t you? Hurry and come home with Daddy!"
"Me, throwing a fit?" Nina Summers suppressed her disgust and sneered mockingly, "What, are you trying to trick me into going back and marrying some old man this time?"
Caleb Summers’s expression stiffened. He recalled the last time he’d come to take Nina Summers home, when he had indeed tried to force her to marry Jim Sheffield...
But so much had happened recently. Of the once-powerful Sheffield Family, some were dead, some were in prison, and some had been dismissed from their posts. To avoid any association, Caleb Summers had blocked every member of the Sheffield Family, and the matter of a marriage alliance had long since been tossed to the back of his mind.
Now that Nina Summers brought it up again, Caleb Summers could only laugh awkwardly and say, sounding a little guilty, "No, no, we’re not doing that. It was all Daddy’s fault before. I just felt that the world is a very dangerous place right now, so I was anxious to find you a good match."
"Now, Daddy’s thought it through. No one is good enough for my precious daughter, so we’re not getting you married! Good girl, you can just stay by Daddy’s side forever, and I’ll take care of you for the rest of your life!"
Caleb Summers delivered these lines with such sincerity, as if he were truly a father who would spoil his daughter rotten. Watching from the side, Melody Summers clicked her tongue in amazement, inwardly marveling at his acting skills.
But Nina Summers just watched Caleb Summers’s performance with cold eyes, feeling nothing at all.
Nina Summers didn’t speak, but Caleb Summers wasn’t fazed. He continued with a kind expression, "Nina, you’ve always been my favorite child. I raised you since you were little. Can’t you feel how much Daddy loves you?"
"I just favored your little brother a bit because he’s younger, but I’ve been reflecting lately. I know I’ve really wronged you these past couple of years... I promise you, it will never happen again!"
"Everything in the past was my fault. Please, just come back home with Daddy. Give me a chance to make it up to you. We’ll go back and live a good life, and from now on, you’ll always come first in the family, okay?"
As he reached the emotional peak of his speech, Caleb Summers even shed a few tears, looking for all the world like he was sincerely repentant.
But this display only made Nina Summers sick to her stomach.
’So many men are just natural-born actors. Look at Caleb Summers—he’s probably even convinced himself with this act!’
Nina Summers couldn’t be bothered to watch Caleb Summers’s "profound fatherly love" act. She just snorted coldly. Following what Melody Summers had taught her, she said slowly, her face devoid of expression, "That’s enough. Stop acting in front of me. I know what you came here for today."
Caleb Summers was taken aback. He immediately put on a hurt and helpless expression. "Daughter, how could you say that about your father..."
Nina Summers rolled her eyes again. She really couldn’t stand his hypocrisy any longer!
So she cut Caleb Summers off and got straight to the point. "You want that ring back? Fine. But I have one condition."
As Caleb Summers stared at her in confusion, Nina Summers said, enunciating each word clearly, "I want all of your assets."
Hearing this, Caleb Summers immediately flew into a rage!
He dropped the loving-father act, slammed his hand on the table, and roared at Nina Summers, "Assets? What assets do I have left? I spent all my savings on fines a few days ago! And when you get down to it, isn’t this all your fault?!"
’If Nina Summers hadn’t provoked Zara Walsh, none of this would have happened! He wouldn’t have been set up and lost his job, and he wouldn’t have had to spend nearly all his savings on fines.’
’Every time he thought about it, Caleb Summers wanted to personally tear this wicked daughter of his limb from limb!’
’But to coax Nina Summers into giving up the Pink Diamond Ring, he had to keep pretending to be a loving father. He was holding it in so much he felt like he was about to start bleeding internally!’
Nina Summers sneered. "You may not have savings, but you still have the house. Transfer the house to my name right now, to be my sole property. You, your wife, and your son are never to set foot in it again!"
Her maternal grandparents had helped pay for that house after Nina Summers was born. Before the natural disasters, it was worth several million, and during the peak of the real estate boom, it could have sold for nearly ten million. Without the help of Mindy Walsh’s family, Caleb Summers, a man from the countryside who had married into the family, could never have afforded it on his own.
Right after Mindy Walsh passed away, Nina Summers was in such a daze that Caleb Summers was able to coax her into renouncing her inheritance rights, and that’s how the house ended up in his name.
Although years of natural disasters had caused property values to plummet, that house held all of Nina Summers’s memories with her mother. She refused to let scum like Caleb Summers and Zoe Kane live in the house her mother had bought. She had to get it back!
The moment Nina Summers finished speaking, before Caleb Summers could even respond, Zoe Kane panicked.
She dropped her silent act and blurted out anxiously, "That’s unacceptable!"
In Zoe Kane’s eyes, that house was meant for her son, Chester Summers. Giving it to Nina Summers was out of the question.
Nina Summers shot Zoe Kane a glare and said with a displeased frown, "And why not? I’m taking back my mother’s house. What right does a mistress like you have to butt in?"
Zoe Kane’s expression stiffened at the word "mistress," and she instinctively shot Caleb Summers a wronged look.
But Caleb Summers’s mind was completely focused on the Pink Diamond Ring, so he didn’t dare have a falling-out with Nina Summers. He had no choice but to pretend he hadn’t heard her.
Seeing that Caleb Summers had no intention of defending her, Zoe Kane could only suppress her grievance, force a smile, and say gently, "Nina, you’re a girl, after all. If we give the house to you, won’t it just end up benefiting an outsider when you get married and leave...?"
"Why not leave it to your little brother, Chester? That way, even after your father is gone, you’ll still have a family home to come back to with your brother around..."
Before Zoe Kane could finish, Nina Summers shot to her feet and slapped her across the face!
A sharp "SLAP!" echoed through the living room. Shaking her stinging right hand, Nina Summers cursed at Zoe Kane, "Shut up! You shameless mistress, what right do you and that spawn of yours have to occupy my mother’s house?"
