Chapter 527: Chapter 527: Returning It To You
Caleb stared at Nina, dumbfounded. He couldn’t seem to believe that his daughter, who had always been so obedient and sensible, would do something like this.
Fighting through the pain in his forehead, he stood up, pointed at Nina, and snapped, "You! How could you lay a hand on Miss Kane?! She’s your elder, for goodness’ sake!"
Nina sharply slapped away Caleb’s pointing hand and frowned. "Elder? What elder? Does a mistress like her even deserve that title?"
She then turned to Caleb and said coldly, "And another thing, don’t think I don’t know you’ve spent a fortune on Zoe Kane over the past few years! Every cent you spent on her was part of my mother’s marital assets, and you’re going to give every last bit of it back to me!"
At Nina’s words, Caleb’s mind went numb. A dull ache surged through him like a tidal wave, as if millions of tiny insects were gnawing at his brain tissue.
He gritted his teeth, forcing out the words, "You! This is... this is outrageous..."
But before he could finish, Nina sneered and said grimly, "If you don’t agree, then there’s nothing left to discuss. I’m not giving you the ring, so you can just forget about it!"
"You!" Caleb pointed a trembling finger at Nina. Whether from the headache or the rage she had provoked, his head swam. He grabbed the back of the sofa for support and staggered back onto the seat.
Caleb didn’t want to hand over the family fortune to Nina. ’If I give it all to my daughter,’ he thought, ’then everything I’ve worked for my entire life will have been for nothing!’
But from Nina’s defiant stance, he knew that if he didn’t agree to transfer ownership of the house today, she would never hand over the Pink Diamond Ring.
Caleb was terrified of Zara Walsh. After yesterday’s ordeal, he understood with chilling clarity that his life meant nothing to the Walsh family.
’If I can’t get the Pink Diamond Ring by tonight, Zara Walsh will really make good on her threat...’
At that thought, Caleb shot a venomous glare at Nina and agreed through gritted teeth. "...Fine. I’ll transfer the house to you. Now hurry up and give me the ring!"
Upon hearing this, Zoe Kane cried out, "Honey! If you give the house to her, what will happen to Chester?"
Caleb’s brow furrowed, and he hissed, "Shut up!"
’The priority right now is getting the ring,’ he thought. ’Otherwise, Zara Walsh won’t let me off the hook!’
’As for the house, I can just trick Nina into signing it back over to me later.’
’And if that doesn’t work...’ A cold glint flashed in Caleb’s eyes.
’If worst comes to worst, I’ll just send that damned girl to join her mother! As her father, I’m the first in line to inherit her estate. The house will be mine again eventually!’
His mind made up, Caleb ignored Zoe Kane’s protests and went through with the property transfer with Nina.
Fortunately, the government had been pushing for services to be moved online since the disaster, so the transfer could be done right then and there. After a few clicks and confirmations, Nina and Caleb quickly completed the process.
After the property transfer was done, Nina forced Caleb to take out his phone. She had him open every single one of his banking and payment apps, then transferred the last of his money—a little over a hundred thousand—into her own account.
And just like that, after more than an hour, Caleb was well and truly penniless—just as he had been before he married Mindy Walsh.
Staring at one zero-balance account after another, Caleb’s head spun, and his mind went into a daze.
’All these years, I swallowed my pride and married into the Walsh family. I outlived my in-laws, got rid of my wife, and finally made it to the top. I successfully claimed the entire family fortune since there were no other heirs, and now, in the blink of an eye, it’s all gone...’
A piercing pain shot through his head. Caleb rubbed his temples hard and gritted his teeth as he said to Nina, "Are you satisfied now? Give me the ring!"
"Not so fast..." Nina said, her gaze slowly falling on Zoe Kane. "And you," she said coldly. "Give me all your money."
While going through Caleb’s accounts, Nina had also glanced at his transfer history. She discovered that starting six years ago, Caleb had been intermittently transferring large sums of money to Zoe Kane.
The amounts ranged from small, romantic gestures of 520 or 1,314 yuan to large sums in the hundreds of thousands. All told, it added up to at least five or six hundred thousand. She was going to make Zoe Kane spit it all back out.
At Nina’s words, Zoe Kane reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, instantly bristling.
Without a second thought, she shot back, "By what right?! By what right do you demand my money?!"
Nina sneered. "Your money? How dare a homewrecker like you even say that? All of it was my mother’s marital property!"
Then, as if remembering something else, she added, "And that jewelry box my mom left me. You took that too. Give it back!"
At the mention of the jewelry box, Zoe Kane’s expression faltered. She stammered, "That... that jewelry was all stolen by refugees..."
Zoe Kane wasn’t lying; the jewelry had indeed been stolen by the refugees Zara Walsh had sent. But Nina didn’t believe a word of it.
Nina snatched the phone out of Zoe Kane’s hand. Ignoring Zoe’s protests, she searched through all the payment apps and found a bank account with a balance of over eight hundred thousand.
Nina shoved the phone in Zoe Kane’s face and frowned. "Looks to me like you sold that jewelry! Where else would this money have come from?"
Zoe Kane’s face flushed in panic. She snatched her phone back and argued loudly, "This money has nothing to do with your parents! It was my own property before I got together with your father!"
And she wasn’t lying. She had sold two properties back in her hometown right when the disaster started. This money was her nest egg, her security for the rest of her life.
But Nina couldn’t care less.
Nina gave Zoe Kane a scornful look and said coldly, "Well, you lost the jewelry my mother left me. Consider this money compensation for that, plus all the marital assets belonging to my mother that you spent."
Seeing the absolute refusal written on Zoe Kane’s face, Nina scoffed, "Fine, don’t give it to me... I’ll just melt this stupid ring down and toss it somewhere you’ll never find it!"
Caleb’s head felt like it was about to split. He grabbed Zoe Kane’s arm and said sternly, "That’s enough! Give her the money!"
Fearing she wouldn’t cooperate, he lowered his voice and whispered in her ear, "The priority right now is getting the ring back. Don’t be a fool. Think about Chester and Leo..."
His eyes held a clear warning. Defeated, Zoe Kane could only weep as her trembling hands navigated her phone, transferring every last cent she had to Nina.
Seeing the seven-figure balance that suddenly appeared in her account, Nina allowed a satisfied smile to touch her lips.
Caleb saw her expression and said through gritted teeth, "Satisfied now? Give me the ring!"
Nina nodded and said nonchalantly, "Fine."
With that, she pulled a ring from her pocket and tossed it at Caleb.
Caleb hastily snatched up the ring, only to find it had no Pink Diamond. It was just a plain silver band, heavily worn and oxidized. Looking closer, he could even see an S925 stamp on it.
Holding the battered ring, Caleb couldn’t quite process what he was seeing. He mumbled, "...This... What is this...?"
Nina snorted. "Isn’t this the ring you wanted? This is the Silver Ring you used to marry my mother. Now, on her behalf, I’m returning it to you."
"From this day forward, my mother has nothing to do with a cheating lowlife like you! And I am no longer your daughter!"
