Chapter 340: Chapter 320: Lex Cross’s Disappearance (3)

The guard, named Gavin Todd, was in his early twenties. His face was fair and clean, making him look like a greenhorn, but he was exceptionally kind.

"Thanks, buddy!"

"Ah, people in the base are always jumping to conclusions. Pregnant women are already more vulnerable than ordinary people. The place where they quarantine them is stuffy, hot, and has no ventilation—even a healthy person would get sick staying there for too long! If there are a lot of pregnant women in quarantine and they put the infected ones together with the healthy ones, wouldn’t that just harm the healthy ones? Anyway, I just don’t think it’s a very sound policy!"

Flora Bloom nodded in agreement with Gavin Todd’s words. Cynthia Grant did too. "The base’s policy is definitely flawed, but I guess we’re the lucky ones!"

Faced with Cynthia Grant’s praise, Gavin Todd rubbed the back of his neck, abashed. "It’s just my humble opinion," he said shyly.

Seeing how kind-hearted Gavin Todd was, Flora Bloom suddenly asked, "That guy, Lin Tian, is from the Adler family. What about you? Which family are you from?"

"I’m with the Todd family."

’The Todd family? His surname is Todd?’ This couldn’t help but make Flora Bloom think of Chelsea Todd. ’Both are from Argent, and both are named Todd... could it be such a coincidence?’

"But even though my surname is Todd, I’m just a minor superpower user who serves the Todd family. I originally worked in the construction department, but I took this guard shift for a day to earn some extra Crystal Cores because the regular guard couldn’t make it."

"I see." Flora Bloom understood, and her heart leaped with joy. ’This Gavin Todd definitely doesn’t know he’s awakened a second superpower. If I can recruit him now, my team will have a Thunder Ability User in the future!’

With this in mind, Flora Bloom gave Gavin Todd a conspiratorial look. "Gavin Todd, how many Crystal Cores do you make a day working in the construction department?"

Gavin Todd did the math. "If I’m fast enough, one gold coin plus a meal per day. If I’m slow, it’s just the meal."

A slight smile touched the corners of Flora Bloom’s lips.

"And what about a day as a gate guard?"

"Two Crystal Cores plus a meal. But if you let a suspected virus carrier into the base, or if a zombie transformation happens inside, you don’t just lose the Crystal Core reward—you get held responsible."

Flora Bloom nodded, a calculating look in her eyes. "For a superpower user like you, doesn’t that make it difficult to even level up your superpower? And how can you get full on just one meal a day?"

Gavin Todd sighed. "Sigh, there’s nothing to be done. Zombies are running rampant outside the base, and all the nearby areas have been picked clean of supplies and food."

"If you want to search farther out, it’s not just dangerous—you might run into trouble and never even make it back. Even if you do return, the team consumes a lot of food on the way, and you have to turn over fifteen percent of whatever you bring back to the base. You’re left with next to nothing. That’s why, aside from the few major families who send teams to try their luck in more distant places, nobody else bothers going."

"The superpower users from the major families have already cleared the zombies in the surrounding areas, so if you want to get Crystal Cores, you have to go farther out."

"Farther means more dangerous. So whether it’s resources or Crystal Cores, a team without real strength can’t get very far."

Flora Bloom looked at Gavin Todd pensively. "Do you know where Lex Adler went?"

Faced with Flora Bloom’s sudden question, Gavin Todd was about to refuse to answer, but then he saw a packet of instant noodles suddenly appear in her hand. "You?!"

Gavin Todd was beyond shocked. "You... you’re a Space Ability User?"

Flora Bloom nodded. "Tell me what you know about Lex Adler, and this packet of instant noodles, plus these cookies, bread, and water, are all yours. The more detailed, the better!" As she spoke, a pack of bear-shaped cookies, a loaf of bread, and a bottle of mineral water appeared in her hand.

Staring at the food and water that had materialized in Flora Bloom’s hands, Gavin Todd was not only stunned, but his mouth was also watering.

"You... sigh!" Gavin Todd suddenly let out a dejected sigh, his face a picture of sincerity. "To be honest with you, I really want to take all your snacks, but I truly don’t know much about Lex Adler’s situation! I only know that he took his people to a very strange place and never came back."

"What kind of place?" Flora Bloom pressed.

Gavin Todd shook his head. "I don’t know that either."

"Then can you find out who issued the mission?"

Gavin Todd nodded. "No need to check. It was a mysterious place discovered by the five major families at the same time. Each family decided to send a team to investigate. But out of all the people sent by the five families, not a single one has returned!"

Flora Bloom fell silent.

’Lex Cross’s satellite communicator has been showing a bad signal and a busy tone this whole time. Could it be related to the location of this mission?’

For some reason, two words immediately popped into Flora Bloom’s mind: "Secret Land."
