Chapter 99: The Pit

The day of the feast finally arrived, the Wutherhorn manor looked more lively that it had ever been, not even during his awakening did it look this lively, Light thought as he walked through the bright halls.

The walls were adorned in all kinds of decorations and there was lively chatter seeping out from every door in the building.

The last three days with Jacob had been rigorous, with Light undergoing different training regimens in just three days. He worked himself to the bone and he was finally confident that he could survive in a simple gladiator match.

Jacob wasn’t exactly the best teacher, he had made sure that Light got almost no rest and was exerting energy at almost every minute of the day.

Light would have rather exerted all that energy in Anissa, they had grown pretty close in the last couple of days, she had blatantly refused to leave his room, but nothing if any consequence had happened between them, at least not yet

The both of them were still untainted as of this moment, and each of them wished for their first time to be with the other person, a wish that neither of them had spoken out loud.

He still wanted Xenia, or so he thought. With the arrival of Anissa, he had been forced to accept the reality that going after Xenia was a wild goose chase.

The woman had made no effort towards him whatsoever, quite frankly, she seemed disturbed everytime he drew closer to her, and he never seemed to understand the reason, at least Anissa was upfront about her feelings for him.

There was a huge banquet in the main hall of the Manor, a large space where everyone of importance sat. Jacob and Xenia were already seated as the Primarch’s special guests, Light glanced up at the table where the family sat.

He could count them all, there were nine of them. His father, mother, and all seven brothers.

They had left no room for him at the table, most likely at their father’s command, but he didn’t care for something that mundane, sitting at the high table wasn’t the luxury most people thought it was.

Light just glanced over at them, then he ordered a maiden to get him a seat, which he sat on.

The festivities began in regular fashion, with the Primarch giving a speech, appreciation to Jacob.

Then a few performances were displayed, nothing out of the ordinary, the day seemed to go by very slowly from Light’s perspective. This was the best he could do, just sit and watch until it was his time to shine.

Yannick watched as his brother entered the room and looked up at the high table, where there would be no room for him. Their father—after much debate—had instructed them not to add an extra seat for Light, as he no longer considered him his son.

Yannick could only watch in pity as his brother was given a regular seat in the crowd.

"Yannick, you should try this wine, it’s really good." Jonathan tapped him on his shoulder and handed him a small glass containing a red liquid.

Jacob noticed when Light came in, but he wondered why the young man didn’t throw his usual tantrum upon noticing that he didn’t have a seat on the high table.

Was it out of fear? Or was the boy waiting for something?

He would decide as the event went on, after the celebrations, the eating and drinking, the toasts, the laughter. It would finally be time for the main event.

People would look forward to Wutherhorn events just so they could witness the gladiator fights that were promised.

There was always at least one entertaining fight per year, one that would be the talk of the town until the next year.

If Light could have such a campaign, then surely his father would have no choice than to accept him.

"I’m so sorry, love. I was getting ready." A feminine voice spoke from behind the red haired young man, he turned to see her golden hair and rosy cheeks, Anissa had already planted herself down on a seat beside him before he could even say anything.

"Why are you not sitting with your family?" She asked, wondering why the boy was sitting in the crowd like a commoner.

"Well, it seems like daddy dearest instructed that I not be provided a seat at the high table. But it’s okay."

"What!? How dare he? His son just returned and he treats him this way?" Anissa was fuming, Light thought she looked beautiful when she was angry, she was already about to march towards the high table in a fit of rage when Light held her hand firmly.

"Where are you going missy? What do you want to do? Yell at the Primarch?" He asked, a knowing smile tugging at his lips.

"I-I... they shouldn’t treat you like this, it’s wrong." She said, her lower lip quivering.

"I know, but I’ll show them, don’t you worry."

With that, his voice trailed off, the master of ceremonies was already announcing the commencement of the gladiator rounds, which caused the rest of the people to yell in excitement.

The gladiator fights were held in a specific area of the Wutherhorn estate called The Pit.

It was a large arena that served as a battle ground for many fights, the ground and pillars were already somewhat destroyed from wear and tear, but the family neglected to repair anything because it ruined the significance of the arena.

"It would take everyone about thirty minutes to get to The Pit on horseback.

So there was a little time for discussions on the way.

_ _ _

Thirty minutes seemed like an hour as the horses trotted along the dirt road slowly, Light moved closer to Jacob and Xenia—leaving Anissa trailing closest behind—who were moving in rhythm. Once Jacob noticed him, he acknowledged him with a nod.

He was starting to get fond of the young man, and vice versa.

"You ready?" Jacob asked in a calm tone, noticing a little nervousness in Light’s expression.

"I was born ready!" Light immediately straightened himself and puffed his chest out, an attempt to appear tough and confident. Jacob did not hate it, he even thought that gesture made the boy more honorable.

"Good, don’t forget what we practiced. And remember to never let your guard down."

Light nodded in acknowledgment. Jacob wasn’t so bad as a master, although he could not forget that humiliating defeat in the training grounds, he was only lucky that neither Anissa, nor Xenia was there to witness such an atrocious performance.

"Jacob! Come here boy." The Primarch called out to the white haired boy who rode steadily on a brown horse.

’What is it with old geezers and being fond of me?’ Jacob mused and sighed. He quickly moved towards the man, who was a few paces ahead of them.

"Have you thought about whether or not you’ll fight in The Pit?" The man spat out his question the second Jacob was within viewing distance.

Jacob hesitated to answer for a moment, then he said. "Well, I welcome the idea, but I’m gonna need a challenge." The young man smiled.

"Oh! I’ll give you a challenge alright!"
