Chapter 1236: Chapter 1236: Too Cruel
"Jiang Xue, no matter what you think of me, I just want to be friends with you, that’s all." Nangong Chen said with an utterly sincere look on his face. He really did want to be friends with Jiang Xue, and he really did have other intentions as well. It was just that for now, those other intentions were being kept hidden.
Even though Jiang Xue hadn’t noticed those other intentions of Nangong Chen’s, she trusted her own intuition. In her eyes, Nangong Chen was a dangerous man, so she didn’t dare relax her vigilance in the slightest.
"Be friends?" Jiang Xue laughed, that smile seductively enchanting, making Nangong Chen freeze for a split second. Then he heard Jiang Xue say, "You, Young Master Nangong, what kind of status do you have? As long as you say the word, there’s no end to people wanting to be friends with you. Why insist on fixating on a little nobody like me?"
"Yes, there are plenty of people who want to be my friends, but the one who saved my life is only you. In ancient times, a life-saving grace was usually repaid with one’s body. However, you’re already married, so I can’t give you my body. Are you really going to strip me even of the right to be your friend? Don’t you think that’s a bit too cruel to me?"
Hearing this, Jiang Xue was so angry she laughed instead, and said, "What, you’ve latched onto me now, is that it? Going by what you’re saying, I shouldn’t have saved you in the first place?"
"No, no, no, you’ve misunderstood me. If it weren’t for you, I might have been dead long ago. Your immense kindness and great favor, I’ve always kept it in mind and am deeply grateful. A mere drop of water should be repaid with a gushing spring—let alone a life-saving grace. I only want to be your friend, and I hope that when you run into difficulties, I can lend you a hand."
"Is it really just that?" Jiang Xue looked at Nangong Chen with open suspicion. How could she bring herself to believe him so easily?
"If you don’t believe me, I can swear to heaven." Nangong Chen’s expression was so earnest that, for a moment, Jiang Xue really couldn’t make up her mind.
But when she thought of Nangong Chen’s status, Jiang Xue felt that if he truly had no ulterior motives and only wanted to be friends, then it wasn’t entirely impossible.
With that in mind, Jiang Xue looked at Nangong Chen and said, "Fine, I’ll believe you—for now."
Hearing this, joy flashed through Nangong Chen’s heart, and then he said, "Jiang Xue, thank you, thank you for giving me this chance."
"By the way, the reason I came to you today is that there’s a contract I need your signature on." As Nangong Chen spoke, he took out the contract he’d already had prepared back in Beijing and handed it over to Jiang Xue.
"A contract? What contract?" Jiang Xue frowned and glanced down at it. With just one look, she roughly understood what the contract was about. So she raised her head to look at Nangong Chen and said, "Nangong Chen, I remember I already told you back in Beijing: all of Nangong Jun’s assets belong to you. I don’t want anything."
"I know."
"Then what do you mean by this now?" Jiang Xue pointed at the contract, looking at Nangong Chen with a very serious expression. Since she’d said she didn’t want it, she definitely wouldn’t take it. Besides, right now Nangong Jun was searching for her everywhere.
If Nangong Jun found out that a portion of his assets was in her hands, who knew what crazy things he might do.
And she absolutely did not want to bring trouble down on her child and her family; otherwise, she wouldn’t have refused Nangong Chen before.
"Jiang Xue, there’s nothing else behind this. These assets, on the surface, are still mine, but in private they belong to the two of us. So you don’t have to worry—Nangong Jun won’t know that you have a share in them." Nangong Chen, of course, knew what Jiang Xue was worried about, so he hurried to explain.
