Chapter 99: Ch 98: Sir McClain’s Estate

Finding the ones behind this corruption should have been easy. Since corruption was a type of energy that left a huge mark, it was easy to follow its trail.

Or...it should have been. But there was no trail to follow in the first place.

"Someone has been taking great care to conceal their presence. But too bad for them. I am not going to allow them to get away with this."

If Kael could not track the one who corrupted these demons, he could track the source of the corruption itself.

And the reason he was taking Lyra with him was simply because he did not trust her to keep her head down.

The Lyra he recalled was a reckless person who did not fear throwing herself head-first into trouble. That had caused more than a few wars to start in his last life.

Kael did not want another war to start anytime soon. So he decided to keep an eye on her.

Following the corruption was easy, but the thing that worried Kael was that he had to go outside the forest and even toward the city.

"This is not good. The source of corruption is too close to a human settlement. Since corruption can stay dormant longer in humans than in demons, I can only conclude that this is someone’s plan."

The reason Kael spoke aloud was to help Lyra understand the situation. She was smart, so she would pick up on what he was saying.

He kept walking until he reached the section where people’s private property started. This section was not supposed to be accessible by commoners.

The noble community was usually tight-knit because of their similar interests and status, and most people easily recognized each other. It was easy for the guards to think of him as an outsider.

So it did not take long for them to stop Kael.

"Sir, I am afraid you have ventured onto the private property of Lord McClain. Since this is your first offense, we would like you to leave."

The guard addressed Kael in a polite manner, which came as a surprise.

Usually, the people working for nobles also belonged to influential families, especially those with posts in relatively safe positions of power. And such people were not known to be polite.

So Kael decided to be polite in return.

"It’s fine. I don’t mind that this is someone’s private property. I just need to check a few things, and then I will be out."

Kael informed the guard, which only served to make the guard look more troubled.

"Sir, please don’t make this more difficult than it has to be. You know what I mean to say. This will be your last warning."

The guard tried to reason with Kael while still being polite. Kael knew he was testing the guard’s patience. But since the guard had been so nice until now, he decided to throw him a bone.

However, the other guards decided they had had enough of Kael and immediately stepped between them and grabbed him by the shoulder.

"Hey, punk! Don’t you understand what our captain is telling you? Would a beating make you understand better?"

Kael sighed and looked at the guard with a pitiful expression. Then, he lifted Lyra and commanded her.

"Lyra, bite him."

Lyra followed his command, and the guard flinched while immediately pulling his hand back.

"Ouch! M-My hand! How dare you-! What kind of dog is that? I will sue you-"

The guard looked panicked and clutched his hand, only to notice that there was no mark.

Lyra’s teeth were not sharp enough to even hurt Kael’s fragile skin. How could they possibly hurt a guard with thick skin?

The loud noise attracted a lot more attention than Kael expected, and it even brought the ’high’ nobles to the scene.

"What is going on here? What are you all looking at? If there’s a beggar, just throw him out-"

A middle-aged noble walked over to them, and he looked to be in a much higher position compared to the guards.

The new noble was also much more informed than the guards because his eyes flashed with instant recognition.

"Sir McClain, there was no need for you to come here yourself. We are working on removing the beggar as we speak-"

"Tsk, what do you mean by beggar? How can you say such things about my esteemed guest? P-Please don’t take offense to my guard’s words, Grand Master Kael. His words are not my words. I-I will take care to ’reeducate’ him later."

The guard looked stunned as he watched his employer bow in front of the person he had assumed was a ’beggar.’ He seemed to have realized what kind of mistake he had just made.

However, Kael showed no indication that he forgave the guard.

Instead, he walked past the guard and toward Sir McClain.

"I would like a bowl of water for my puppy. She seems to have bitten something bad and now needs to freshen up her mouth."

Kael picked up Lyra and spoke with a soft smile on his face.

The guard who had been bitten by Lyra flinched, and Sir McClain instantly connected the dots.

"Of course! It would be my pleasure to serve you, Grand Master Kael. Please follow me inside. What else would you like to do? Did you have a specific reason for visiting us?"

Sir McClain was sweating bullets as he asked this question. He looked like he was having a hard time keeping his face straight.

But he did not seem nervous in the way Kael wanted him to be.

’Hmm, I don’t see this man as a good enough actor, so I doubt he is pretending. But he is also not nervous enough about seeing me here. Then, does he not know what is going on?’

It was possible that Sir McClain was being used as well...not that it mattered to Kael.

His first priority was to find the truth behind what was happening.

"Sir McClain, I will take you up on your offer. I would like to see all corners of your estate thoroughly."

Kael spoke with enough certainty to prevent Sir McClain from taking his offer back. His eagerness made Sir McClain flinch and look doubtful.

"I guess...I can do that for you...Grand Master Kael."
