Chapter 100: Ch 99: That Garden

The tour of the estate started as soon as Lyra finished drinking her water. Sir McClain looked proud of the estate and all the things he had managed to accomplish in his young life.

Kael did not find the tour interesting, but he pretended to be interested so that Sir McClain would continue to show him around.

The guards continued to follow after them, but they kept their distance from him, which was for their own good.

"-and this is the garden my grandmother was particularly fond of. She kept all kinds of beasts there before she died recently. We have yet to open it and check on its condition. It’s just...hard to see this place because it reminds me too much of her...Grand Master Kael, what are you doing?"

Sir McClain yelled as he watched Kael reach toward the door and push it open.

But there was a reason why Kael had done such a thing. It was because there was a large concentration of corruption hidden behind this door that he instantly wanted to check.

"Grand Master Kael, are you trying to pick a fight...what is happening here?"

The noble looked angry at first, but then shocked once the door opened and a rush of black smoke headed toward them.

Kael instantly bound the door with his magic before he pushed the smoke back. Then, he expanded his shield like a bubble so that he could walk inside the garden.

Both Lyra and Sir McClain followed him and he decided to issue a warning to both.

"Don’t leave my shield at all costs. I won’t be able to guarantee your lives."

It was a warning that made the pair flinch and walk closer to Kael.

They kept walking, but the darkness made it almost impossible to tell where they needed to go.

Thankfully, Kael’s sensitive nature instantly pointed out the source of the corruption to him and he started to form a seal around the object.

However, it was not easy to contain the corruption.

There was no telling how long the corruption had been gaining strength, and now it was starting to push Kael’s powers back as well.

He had to use much more power than he expected to force the corruption back, and the effort made his knees feel weak.

"G-Grand Master Kael, what is-"

"Don’t speak to me right now. I need to concentrate as much as I can and bring this thing under control. Otherwise, everyone in this estate...no, this town will get corrupted."

Kael panted, and Sir McClain instantly shut his mouth.

After what felt like an eternity, the corruption finally started to dwindle and the seal started to take effect.

The seal snapped into place in a second, but the process thus far made Kael feel like his body was burning from the inside.

"Grand Master, what is-"

"Don’t come close to me. My magic is in a highly alerted state and it will lash out if you come too close. Instead, send for the Magic Tower and the Temple. They need to be informed of what is happening."

Kael commanded and Sir McClain looked shocked.

He was about to comply when the guard from before decided to try his luck once more.

"Tsk, we cannot call the authorities. Don’t you know what kind of reputation we will get if we call for them? Our lives will be over..."

"Your life will become hell if this corruption manages to break free of my seal. Do you want to experience that hell?"

Kael demanded and the guard looked too stunned to talk back.

Thankfully, Sir McClain had a brain and assessed the situation correctly.

"I-I will go and call for the authorities. I will also ask for this area to be evacuated. Please, just make sure this does not explode and take us all out."

Sir McClain quickly left in a hurry while Kael kept an eye on the seal.

Thankfully, it seemed to be holding up just fine, so an accident would not happen...for now.

"It seems like Grand Master Kael found the extra surprise I left for him. This is far sooner than I anticipated. He’s far too quick to catch on to these things."

Chairwoman Lumi sighed as she looked at the crystal ball that played the recording of what Kael had done.

It was a pity that she could not see his work firsthand, but she knew that a live viewing would expose her.

That was why she decided to delay her viewing by half an hour.

Still, it was impressive what someone as young as Kael had been able to do.

He had discovered the spell she had left behind and even managed to wrap it up nicely.

"Lumi, I do hope you have a plan for what to do next. I don’t like to see disappointment."

Council Head Kristain warned her and Lumi let out a small laugh. There was no sign of fear or agitation on her face.

"Relax, my dear partner. I anticipated this happening. This is more of a distraction for the thing you are working on. So, how is our meeting with the demons coming along?"

Lumi asked in an amused voice. Seeing her so relaxed filled Council Head Kristain with certainty that their plan was working.

"The demons have agreed to help us out and lend us some of their own people to experiment with. I am sure you will be able to make good use of them."

Kristain sounded certain, but Lumi only sighed when she looked at him.

"And, what does this deal have in store for you? I doubt you would make a deal that did not have anything in it for you."

Lumi pointed out and Kristain looked at her with a heavy expression. It said that she did not need to know what he was planning.

But Lumi already knew what her partner was planning.

The war between humans and demons was fast approaching. The Temple was preparing to ignite the flame any day now. And Kristain was going to use this opportunity to make sure he was able to profit.

After all, he was the kind of man who would do anything to achieve his goal.

Unfortunately, even she did not know what that goal of his was.
