Chapter 98: Ch 97: Let’s have some fun
"You are doing good. Make sure you check your right side a little more. And don’t follow Kael’s sense of balance. Males have a different center of balance than females."
"I-I understand."
Kael looked to his side where Iris and Seraphina were training.
Seraphina was a healer and the saintess, so there was no need for her to get physically stronger. But she still wanted to do her best...or so she told Kael.
Honestly, looking at her giving 100% in physical training made Kael feel like he should be ashamed of himself.
But he could not force himself to feel guilty for resting. And that made him feel awkward about sticking around and watching the girls work out.
Leon had decided to go running to build up his stamina, so Kael decided to head out and find him instead. It would be a good distraction for him.
"Lyra, let’s go and bring Leon back now."
Kael told the cursed Demon Queen, and she nodded before following him into the outskirts of his territory.
Kael’s property was surrounded by a barrier. It allowed people with access to cross it at any time, but no one else was allowed in.
Leon had access, but he had never shown any eagerness to leave the barrier. And that was what made Kael surprised to hear fighting noises coming from outside the barrier.
He followed the sound, only to see Leon swiftly killing off demons.
The demons seemed to have lost their minds, and their bodies had started deforming as well. This was a sign of corruption.
It was not an unusual sight in itself. Lower-level demons had no defense against even the slightest traces of corruption, and these parts had seen Roku.
But it was a little startling to see them so close to the barrier.
"Leon, you can come back now. I need to check on these demons, so I need you not to kill them all."
Kael knew Leon was capable of killing these demons, but that was not what he needed right now.
The hero also understood what Kael meant by his words, and he quickly ran back inside the barrier.
The demons followed him with blank looks on their faces, and Kael wasted no time trapping them inside a second barrier.
"I don’t know what happened here. These demons started going crazy all of a sudden and attacked me as soon as they saw me. They were disturbing the wildlife, so I decided to do something about it."
Leon explained what had happened before Kael could reach a conclusion and pin the blame on him. He sounded serious about this as well, likely not wanting to be misunderstood.
Kael had no intention of pinning the blame on Leon, especially with how strong the scent of corruption was.
This likely signaled an oncoming disaster.
"I don’t think this was a natural case of corruption. As much as I want to say that Roku did it, my instincts are telling me that the culprit behind this is someone else."
Leon continued, and that changed things for Kael.
He was not going to dismiss Leon’s words just because he was a kid. In fact, Kael was sure Leon was on to something.
Lyra took a step closer to the fallen bodies to inspect them, but Kael grabbed her before she could get too far.
"Hey, be careful about where you step. I know you think you are all tough and powerful, but you are currently a baby and your body is weak. It would be bad if you got corrupted by this."
Unlike Roku, these demons were not vessels of corruption, but carriers.
And like carriers of other diseases, they could transmit their corruption to others without much effort.
Lyra protested at first, but ultimately gave in once she heard Kael’s reasoning. But the tension in the air remained.
Something was going on here, and Kael had a feeling things were about to become complicated for him pretty soon.
’I better focus on breaking Lyra’s curse as soon as I can so that she can go back home and handle things for me. A war would be the worst outcome for us all.’
Unfortunately, things seemed to be headed in the direction Kael least expected.
And he was not the only one who was worried about war.
The Demon Queen in his arms was equally agitated by what her people were doing.
__________
"A war? Has everyone lost their minds? How could they allow corruption to spread like this? I am sure those other fuckers are just waiting to blame humans for this and go to war. Ugh, if only I could go back and teach them all a lesson-"
Lyra felt betrayed and agitated at the same time. She wanted to tear something apart, but the only thing she had right now was her bed.
Her soft and comfortable bed that had been given to her by Kael.
Just the thought of anything happening to it left a sour taste in her mouth. But Kael’s scent made her feel better, and she curled up on herself.
"Darn it! You are distracting me again, human! I will not forgive this humiliation..."
Lyra complained but continued to roll around in Kael’s scent anyway. It made her feel calmer and much more relaxed.
It was also better for her to be able to think about what she needed to do next.
But there was not much she could do in her current condition. She was stuck like a pet with no way to break her curse at the moment.
Still, there were some things she could do, like finding the scent of the one who had caused these demons to mutate and forcing some memories out of their small minds.
But to do that, she would first have to sneak out of the house, and that might be the biggest disadvantage she had.
Still, she tried her best and succeeded in making it to the front door. And that was where she met Kael, who was planning on heading out.
He saw her and quickly petted her, causing her to melt. That allowed him an opportunity to grab her and take her out with him.
"Lyra, let’s go and have some fun, alright?"
He asked, but Lyra did not feel like having fun. She needed to work.
Unfortunately, she was unable to break free of his grip and was forced to follow him outside.
