Chapter 96: Ch 95: Talk of interest

"Here, take it, you bastard! How dare you think that you can come here and take over my territory? I should smack you again just to teach you a good lesson."

Lyra kicked the rotting body in front of her with her legs before she flinched at the texture.

As the demon queen, it was not her first time dealing with corruption. Demons were a species that were infected with corruption. But because of this, they had also learned how to control it to some extent.

But humans could not control corruption. And it was also harder to corrupt humans.

If a human had actually been corrupted, then...

"Darn it! This is a messed-up situation. A demon must be helping the humans with this experiment. I am going to kill them all once I go back..."

Lyra raged and she was about to kick the fallen body once more when someone picked her up.

Kael’s familiar scent washed over her and her body wanted to relax. But she instantly recalled where she was and what she was doing and started to struggle.

She even tried to bite Kael, but her small teeth made no impact.

"Hmm, it looks like your beast is untrained. Should I give you a hand in disciplining it?"

An unfamiliar voice asked and Lyra felt startled as another scent reached her nose. She could not even imagine how she had failed to notice that there was another scent in the air besides Kael’s.

She growled to show her displeasure, but Kael hid her face in his chest, which made a lungful of his scent reach her nose, instantly calming her down.

"Darn it! This feels nice...Ugh, I will get you next time..."

Her voice was starting to sound drowsy and she was beginning to feel lethargic as well.

"Ugh, stupid humans...if only you understood what I am saying. All of you will pay for treating me like this."

Lyra complained, but she fell asleep soon after.

"Grand Master Margret, please do not overstep your boundaries in my territory. I don’t want to have sour relations with you."

Kael warned Margret and she instantly took a step back and raised her hands to show that she was harmless.

With her hunched back and aged appearance, Grand Master Margret looked no different from a kind lady next door. And that was why people often let their guard down around her, thinking she was harmless.

But Kael knew better.

Anyone who worked under her lost their humanity. In fact, he was willing to bet that Grand Master Margret was not even human herself.

But as much as he disapproved of her methods, he had no desire to make an enemy out of her.

"Hmm, it seems you care about your companions, Grand Master Kael. That’s a good thing. The later you lose your humanity, the more fond memories you will have to hold on to. But also remember—nothing lasts forever. Not even memories or bonds. Now then, shall we head inside and have some tea?"

Grand Master Margret took charge of the conversation and Kael pretended to relinquish the lead.

He sent a message to the others to follow him inside while he led his fellow Grand Master in as well.

’With Margret here, it will be better if those three kids are in my direct line of sight. That way, the old witch won’t be able to pull any tricks.’

...

"You have a nice and cozy house in this space. But don’t you feel the need to have something grander? Kids your age usually aim for big things in life."

Grand Master Margret commented as soon as Kael handed her the cup of tea he brewed.

Margret likely did not mean anything by these words, but Kael still felt compelled to answer her question.

"I have no desire to get too much. It’s a hassle to handle too many things. I have no reason to burden myself with heavy loads like other Grand Masters."

Kael did not mean this to be a jab, but it sounded like one toward the ever-busy head scientist.

Thankfully, Margret did not take his words too seriously because of his young age and lack of experience.

"So, what else can you tell me about the vessel of corruption? How did you come across it? I doubt you found him just roaming around."

Grand Master Margret finally came to the real question that she wanted to ask.

Kael saw no point in hiding what he knew about the situation, so he told her everything. Seraphina, Leon, and Iris also came back around this time and sat down beside them.

"Hmm, I see. This is a grave matter. From what you say, we can assume that this was someone’s experiment. I will keep an eye out for this information, but do keep me posted about this matter."

Grand Master Margret finished the conversation and Kael sighed in relief. This had gone better than he expected.

He was ready to bid the old lady farewell when she turned toward Lyra and tried to grab her.

Lyra instantly woke up and hid behind Kael, but the look of discomfort was clear on the cursed demon queen’s face.

"Grand Master Margret, may I ask what you are doing?"

Kael asked in a tense voice as he positioned himself in a way that hid Lyra’s body.

The other Grand Master quickly placed her hand on her chest in a display of heartbreak before speaking in a dramatic voice.

"All this old lady wanted to do was check up on a demonic beast. There have been many attempts to domesticate demon beasts up until now, but most of them ended in failure. However, I can tell that this one is special. So I wanted to take a look—"

"I think you have overstayed your welcome, Miss Margret. My companions are not tools for you to experiment on."

Kael did not like to be direct often. Usually, he preferred to soften the blow.

But there were some people who needed to be told ’no’ with a solid reason and Grand Master Margret was such a person.

Talking in a roundabout way with her would only make her want to get her way even more.

"Alright! Since my cute junior has asked me not to interfere, I will take my leave now. But in return, make sure you look after that beast. And hand me its corpse when it dies. I will make good use of it."

Lyra shuddered behind Kael’s back and hissed at Margret, but the older lady just laughed that offense off before she left.
