Chapter 95: Ch 94: First Human Kill
Sigh
"So it has come to this after all. It would have been better if I had taken care of you without Kael realizing it. Unfortunately, I hesitated for too long."
Leon sighed, but Roku’s form had already lost its mind. It attacked Leon, but Leon used his mana to end the vessel’s life.
Once he took care of his part, he decided to check up on Seraphina. Iris did not need to be looked after because she was already used to hurting humans. But Seraphina was a different matter.
The best-case scenario was her waking up to her true nature and the worst...
Well, that had already happened once before.
__________
Seraphina was training alone near the river when she felt the sudden rise in corruption.
The annoying feeling was clawing at her skin, trying to draw her attention toward the entity walking toward her.
"What is that...?"
Seraphina’s instincts told her that whatever was walking toward her was a problem she needed to take care of if she wanted to protect Kael and her home.
But the uncertainty of the situation made her tense up, not knowing what she should do next.
So she decided to check out the problem first and then make a decision about what solution to apply.
She walked toward the bushes and parted them to look inside, only to see Roku’s familiar figure walking toward her.
His familiar silhouette made her relax for a few seconds before she noticed the dark aura around him. Moreover, his limbs looked deformed, giving him a sense of being ’wrong’ somehow.
"Roku, do you need help?"
Seraphina asked in a careful voice. She kept her distance from the kid, but stayed close enough that she could jump in and help him if he asked for it.
Roku looked at her with pleading eyes and his voice sounded low and tense.
"P-Please, help me! It hurts...so much..."
Those eyes made Seraphina move and she almost reached out to help Roku when her instincts yanked her back.
Because of this, she dodged Roku’s attack at the last second and the younger one took a step forward on unsteady legs.
"S-Sister, it hurts! Please, help me...Give me your mana-"
Seraphina immediately formed a barrier between herself and Roku, but the younger one wouldn’t stop.
"This is..."
’He’s been completely taken over by corruption. Hmm, he even fragmented his body already. There is no saving him. So let’s put him to rest.’
"But...Kael told me I needed to look after him. I cannot just kill him."
’Does it really matter? What Kael won’t know won’t hurt him. Now hurry! Let’s put that thing out of its misery.’
Seraphina felt like she had no control over her body.
Her hand moved on its own and divine power gathered around her palm before it struck Roku’s body.
Satisfaction and relief filled her far more than guilt, and she collapsed to her knees while giggling. It felt...so satisfying and freeing to get rid of Roku. But she could not tell why she felt like this.
’Aren’t you happy now? That child was becoming our competition for Kael’s attention. Now that he’s out of our way, it will be easy to approach Kael and monopolize his attention.’
Seraphina felt sick just thinking about it, but every part of her told her that the voice was right.
"This is..."
’Our true nature. You know it as well, right? That you are not the virtuous saintess that the world expects you to be. There is a beast lying in your shadow, waiting to devour.’
"This is not true!"
Seraphina tried to deny this, but her rebuttal felt weak. She felt seen through, but in a way she did not want to be.
Why could she not feel shame like a normal person after killing another person? Why did she have to feel this joy at the thought of monopolizing Kael? And why did she not mind this at all?
"I see. So you ended up taking action after all. It was only a matter of time before you did."
Leon’s voice made Seraphina look up, but instead of pity, she saw recognition. Leon knew of her true nature, but he did not make a comment about it.
"But I-"
She tried to speak but then paused.
Seraphina had been terrified of others finding out her true nature and shunning her. But Leon had found out and Seraphina had not felt the same fear she expected.
Actually, when she thought about it, she did not care about anyone finding out. But there was one exception- Kael.
If he were to find out and shun her...she did not think she would be able to take it.
"I won’t tell you what you should and should not do. But do be careful not to hurt Kael. If you do, then I will eliminate you as well."
Leon felt different from the person Seraphina remembered him to be. But honestly, she could not say she knew him well at all.
She did not even know herself well.
But she did know one thing- "I have no intention of hurting Kael. You can trust me with his life."
She promised and that was the end of their conversation.
__________
"I am sorry. You lost your life too young. May your soul find peace in the next life."
Iris prayed in front of the mass of corruption she had slain.
She felt a pang of guilt at the young life she had taken, but nothing more than that. She had too much blood on her hands to keep feeling guilty.
Besides-
’That child had already been devoured before he got a chance to be saved. There is no point in being sad about his fate.’
Once Roku’s body was disposed of, she decided to inform Kael about what had happened here.
Chances were that he already knew what happened, but it did not hurt to get all the facts straight.
However, she did not need to do that because Kael sent her a message to come inside.
She doubted she was the only one he had called, but just being given a message from him made her feel special.
’Darn it! I am falling more and more for Kael. Any more and I won’t have a chance to get out of here.’
But Iris knew that it was already too late for her.
