Chapter 94: Ch 93: Fragments of Corruption

[Warning: High levels of corruption are spreading]

[Target Seraphina’s corruption level: 10%]

The two messages flashed across the screen at the same time and Kael felt his head hurt at the implications behind this.

He knew that Seraphina had ventured outside her room last night in order to check up on Roku, but he had decided not to interfere and allow her that much freedom.

Apparently, that was the wrong thing to do because it ended up corrupting her faster.

But that was not even the bigger issue here. The bigger issue was definitely the high levels of corruption he could feel. It did not feel normal, but rather like a ticking time bomb that was ready to go off at any second.

He no longer had time to waste on unnecessary projects. Kael quickly headed out toward the direction he could feel that huge lump of energy coming from.

The first thing he noticed was how quiet the forest was. And the second thing he noticed was the mass of corruption heading toward him.

But when he concentrated on it, he could feel that there was more than one mass of corruption.

’Did it somehow mutate into multiple parts? This is not good. I better take care of this situation, and fast...’

At least, that was the plan. But a deformed mass walked toward Kael and his breath hitched in his throat.

Roku was walking toward him with his limbs covered in dark matter. He was struggling to walk and even his eyes looked dazed as a side effect of the corruption he was experiencing.

And yet, his voice was crystal clear when he called out to Kael.

"K-Kael, help me. It hurts! It hurts a lot...I feel like I am going to lose my mind. P-Please! I...made a mistake..."

The kid begged, somehow still conscious. But that should not be possible. And Kael was not saying this just because he was in disbelief.

Not only had this kid been completely consumed by corruption, but he had also split the corruption apart. That was only possible once the corruption had taken over.

"P-Please, help me-!"

The kid begged in anguish and there was only one thing Kael could do for him at this point.

"I understand. I am sorry that things came to this. However, I promise that you will get to sleep peacefully now."

Kael promised Roku as he used his magic to put the kid to sleep.

Or, that was the intention.

But the corruption started to fight back.

"N-No! I refuse! I don’t want to sleep. I want to get better! I want to live. So help me-!"

The kid reached toward Kael through the magical binds that were holding him down. He was thrashing and the corruption started to devour the restraints that were holding him down.

Kael gritted his teeth, knowing fully well that this was all happening because of his lack of will to kill Roku.

"D-Don’t...O-Or I...S-Should I get rid of the others for you? Are they troubling you? D-Don’t worry! Once we are the only ones left, you will have to pay attention to me."

Now that was going too far.

Kael could feel his sympathy for the kid slowly slipping away.

[The consciousness known as ’Roku’ has disappeared. Please end the vessel of corruption before it can spread any further.]

Kael raised his staff toward Roku and hesitated once more. But then a loud yelp echoed through the forest. It was Lyra’s howl and that made Kael act.

He had to make a decision now and he chose to save the future rather than linger on the past.

"I am sorry, kid. I wish you the best in your next life. However, it is time to end this painful one for you."

"P-Please, don’t do this! I promise I will be a good child and not cause trouble. Please, save me-!"

Roku begged earnestly but Kael closed his eyes and ears before he put the first fragment to rest.

Now, there were five more left, and he needed to take them out.

However, a miracle happened.

Someone had already taken out the other four fragments, leaving only one behind.

So Kael headed toward that fragment, intending to take care of it himself as well when he felt a huge spike of magical energy enter his property.

He recognized that energy and he quickly lowered the barrier to allow Grand Master Margret onto his property.

She landed quietly and Kael immediately went to where she had landed.

Coincidentally, it was in the same direction as the last fragment was....well, maybe it was not a coincidence at all.

Kael reached her in record time but she had already caught the last fragment and held it in her magic-made prison.

"So this is the specimen you messaged me about? Isn’t it too weak?"

Grand Master Margret asked with a frown on her face. She looked unimpressed with her find and Kael rubbed his forehead at her reaction.

"I am afraid that there was an accident a few minutes ago. The vessel managed to split itself into six pieces. I had no choice but to dispose of the other five and I was on my way to dispose of this last piece as well."

Kael informed the other Grand Master and she looked a little annoyed by his words.

"I see. It’s a pity that I cannot use the whole specimen, but I guess beggars cannot be choosers. I will take this kid now."

Grand Master Margret informed him and Kael got ready to tell her that it would not be possible since he intended to destroy the vessel.

But the screen had other plans for him.

[Grand Master Margret’s actions have been confirmed and chosen to be an acceptable solution.]

It was a surprise to read, but Kael decided that if the ancient magic thought this was fine, then it would not be a problem anymore.

"Alright! You are free to take that fragment. Now, would you like to come in and have a cup of tea?"

Kael offered, more out of courtesy than actual interest. But he did not expect Grand Master Margret to take him up on his offer.

"Hmm, I might as well take you up on your offer since I came all the way here. I assume you will want my help in deceiving the others about this vessel?"

Grand Master Margret was as sharp as her magic. And luckily, she also seemed to be in the mood to do him a favor.
