Chapter 93: Ch 92: Roku’s last day
The night had been quite...suspiciously quiet.
Kael would not have usually liked such a quiet and uneventful night, but something was bothering him in the back of his mind.
He had a feeling that something was wrong, but he was not picking up on what it was. So he decided to think about it later and head toward breakfast for now.
Both Seraphina and Leon came down quickly for breakfast, which was another odd thing. They usually liked to sleep in if they had the chance to.
Even Iris looked surprised to see those two up. And unlike Kael, she chose to question them directly about it.
"You both woke up so early. Are you sure you will be fine during training?"
Iris looked uncertain, but both Seraphina and Leon seemed unfazed by her reaction.
"It’s fine. We both went to bed early, so we woke up early. Right, Leon?"
Seraphina decided to lighten the mood, but Leon immediately tanked her attempt.
"Tsk, I woke up early because there is no way I am going to miss out on keeping an eye on that thing. Speaking of that thing...is it not awake yet?"
Leon was talking about Roku, and it was easy to tell from his attitude.
Kael felt a headache coming on because of Leon’s actions, and he had never felt like yelling at Leon more than he did at this moment.
’No! Yelling does not resolve anything. I already know what is bothering Leon, and it is not something that can be fixed. At the same time, I cannot ask him to get used to the aura of corruption either since it is in his instincts to dislike it.’
As a hero, Leon had strong instincts against anything that could be a threat to this world’s stability. It was a good thing since it allowed him to know what was dangerous and what was not.
So it was not a good thing for Kael to ask him to get used to Roku. Still...
"Leon, just be nice to the poor kid for today. Someone will be coming to get him in the afternoon. So just be nice until then."
Kael pressed Leon, and the hero looked annoyed but ultimately decided to agree with him.
"Fine, I understand. I won’t torment that thing anymore...as long as it does not talk to me first."
It was not a satisfactory answer, but Kael had a feeling that this was the best he was going to get from Leon.
He sighed and decided to take this as a win for now.
Especially since he could feel Roku’s presence standing right outside the dining room.
Kael sensed him there as soon as the kid came downstairs, but he did not say anything since Roku had not shown himself.
Roku waited a few more seconds outside, debating whether he should come in or not when Kael decided to call out to him.
"It’s fine. You should come and join us for breakfast."
Roku fidgeted for a few seconds, and then he walked inside. He immediately sat beside Kael and shrank when he saw the looks he was getting from Leon.
"Leon, stop tormenting poor Roku. It’s his last day with us."
The hero looked away with an unhappy expression. But it was the look on Roku’s face that made Kael concerned.
"Are you alright?"
He asked the kid, and Roku bit his lip. Kael had a feeling that Roku would not say anything about what was bothering him, but he was quickly proven wrong.
"Do...I have to leave? I like it here. Can you keep me? I promise I will be nice and keep out of your way. Please, don’t send me away."
Roku looked vulnerable when he made that request, and Kael felt bad for dashing his hopes.
’Tsk, this is going to leave a mental scar on this kid. But I cannot help him even if I wanted to. All I can do for him is pray that Grand Master Margret is kind to him.’
Kael’s expression was enough to give Roku an answer, and he immediately looked away from Kael before sitting down at the table.
There was no apology from Kael’s side, but there was no reassurance either.
And that was how the conversation came to an end.
Finally, it was time for training, and Roku decided he wanted to join the others in training today in order to try and control his destructive powers.
Kael allowed it, but he had a feeling the kid made his decision because he wanted to avoid him.
Somehow, the situation had turned troublesome.
__________
’I...why did I react like that? Kael helped me out a lot, but that does not mean he has a responsibility toward me. I should tell him about Master so that I can return-’
But where could he return to? Back to that cave his master had locked him in because that was what he needed?
Roku did not want to go back there. He felt like he would suffocate if he ever went back.
’How did I even survive before I got saved? Master...what did Master tell me?’
Roku knew that his master had given him instructions regarding what he needed to do once he was all alone, but he could no longer recall them.
All he could feel right now was his burning need to stay here and protect his life. He did not want to go anywhere.
’I...What can I do to convince Kael to let me stay here? What do I need to do-?’
There was one thing Roku could try, but he was not sure if it was the right thing to do or not, and that was to become someone only Kael could take care of.
The reason Kael had brought him here in the first place was because he was dangerous to others. So if he became a danger once more, then maybe-!
Maybe Kael would allow him to stay here.
"Y-Yeah-! That could work."
To make that possible, he needed to break the seal around his powers. So he allowed them to start rampaging inside him. He was going to do whatever he needed to do in order to break the seal around his powers.
And once he had the seal broken, Kael would be forced to keep him around.
Finally, Roku would have a home.
