Chapter 137: Ch 136: It’s better not to know

There was a feeling of unrest in the air the next morning. Kael could feel the tension in the air as he walked down toward the common hall.

The first thing he noticed was the fact that there were far fewer people in the lobby than yesterday. And combined with the worried looks he saw...

’Hmm, it seems something happened last night. Should I ask about it?’

Kael did not want to overstep and stress the people out by asking questions. But luckily for him, the inn owner decided to rush over to him and question him about the situation anyway.

"Sir, are you alright? Have you seen the other patrons of this establishment? Some of our guests went missing last night. I-I have no idea what to do! My business will be ruined if this gets out."

The innkeeper had tears in her eyes as she told Kael about her hardships.

Kael felt sorry for her, but he did not want to get involved in her case since it sounded troublesome.

"Ah! I am sorry, but I was knocked out yesterday, so I did not see anyone else. But maybe your guests went out to have some fun at night and have yet to return?"

The innkeeper did not seem to believe him. Her expression darkened even more at his words.

"Those people would never! I...Sir, you can use magic, right? Please track our guests down for me. I will pay you!"

Kael took a step back as the desperate lady clutched his clothes. She was physically stronger than him, and Kael had a feeling she would pull him down if he was not careful.

So his first task at hand was to make the inn lady let go of him, and he was even willing to use magic to achieve this.

"Miss, can you please let me go? I don’t like how you are gripping me-"

"I won’t let go until you agree to help me. Please! This is a matter of life and death!"

She pleaded, and Kael decided to finally help her so that she would leave him alone.

He cast his magic, and the innkeeper watched him with a wide-eyed expression. She bit her lip as soon as Kael finished casting, and then she turned her hopeful eyes toward him.

"Sir..."

"It seems like the missing people walked out of here on their own. They headed this way."

Kael led the inn lady out to the lake, and then he stopped in front of the water’s surface.

"They stopped here and decided to take a late-night swim. And the rest...well, let’s just say the monsters got a late-night snack because of it."

Kael told the inn lady, and she broke down.

"No! This cannot be! My guests! They still had to pay for their stay-"

"How about I compensate you for their stay? You should report this ’accident’ to the authorities."

Kael placed a hand on the shop owner’s shoulder and helped her up. She instantly looked better at the thought of being compensated by him.

But she did not break character by showing her joy too obviously.

"A-Alright! I will go and call the guards...as soon as I get my money. Let’s head in now."

Kael sighed as he followed behind the inn lady. But he also cast one last look back at the lake with narrowed eyes.

The magic that had led these people here felt familiar. He could feel traces of Elena’s and Seraphina’s magic here.

Sigh

It was a good thing that Kael had decided to come here before the guards did. The traces Seraphina and Elena had left behind were faint, but a sensitive person could still pick up on them.

So Kael decided to remove them for now and return to the inn.

’I better have a talk with the kids about this. I need to teach them early that violence does not solve all problems and that killing is not an appropriate solution.’

The atmosphere returned to normal by the time breakfast came around.

The innkeeper had called for the guards, who investigated the situation and, after finding nothing, decided to classify it as a ’suicide.’

And the innkeeper also decided to take advantage of the situation and forge a will from those people to claim their belongings.

’What a shrewd woman. It has not even been a day since those people died, and she is already making her move. Not that it is any of my business.’

Kael kept eating his food and did not say much, and the others also behaved as they normally did.

"Mother, would you like to taste this dish? It’s good."

Elena picked up her fork and held it toward Kael for him to taste. He took a bite and chewed it properly before he looked her in the eyes.

A silence barrier appeared around them, preventing anyone else from hearing what he had to say.

"Elena, Seraphina, what did you both do last night?"

Kael’s voice was calm and devoid of judgment, but it still made the two he addressed flinch.

"We went to sleep last night. Don’t we look well-rested-"

"I am sure you slept well. But I don’t think that’s an excuse to let your magic leak out unconsciously. Accidents can happen because of this. It’ll be bad for you if someone links an ’accident’ to you and accuses you of unnecessary crimes."

Kael pointed out, wanting to stress how important it was for the pair to control their magic.

As expected, both Elena and Seraphina looked sorry for what they had done, and they lowered their heads toward the table.

"Did our magic cause some problems? I-I am sorry! I will try to do better. It’s just...I finally relaxed yesterday since you were awake and back with us. My control must have slipped."

"M-Me too! I relaxed as well because I was in a safe place. I won’t do this again."

Both Seraphina and Elena sounded genuine when they made their promises, and Kael wanted to believe them.

Then why did he have a feeling he was being played by these two right now?

’I don’t have a reason to doubt the kids. But something about the situation is bothering me. Is this truly a coincidence? Or maybe someone is trying to frame them because they sensed their magic leaking?’

Whatever the case was, Kael would need to keep an eye on the situation.
