Chapter 134: Ch 133: Mother

Kael calmed down after hearing Leon’s words. He realized that the hero was right when he said that Elena was alright.

But that did not mean that the trouble was over.

"So, have you decided what we are going to do now? The war is over, but the damage has already been done. People will demand an answer. And too many soldiers were attacked by a necromancer. The traces are everywhere. I don’t think people would welcome Elena with open arms."

Iris pointed out with an unexpected heaviness in her tone.

Actually, he had not expected her to notice the current situation. But since she was hated by the nobles, it was possible that she had become sensitive to these topics.

Not that it was a problem for Kael.

"I can take her in as my ward for now. That should shut most people up and-"

Sigh

"Can you not think about putting your life in danger for one second? Those nobles will start tearing you apart if you take a necromancer back with you...not that it’s a problem. It will give us justification to finally tear them down."

Leon began with a worried tone, but he looked thoughtful by the end of it.

As the hero, Leon would not do anything that could harm innocent people, but sometimes, he did look like he was considering a mass murder or two.

It was nice of him to want to help Kael, but putting himself in danger was unnecessary. And that was how Kael found himself reaching out to pat Leon’s head like he was a kid.

"Hmm, don’t stress about the situation. It will resolve itself...hopefully. And if not, we can just ignore all the fools who are complaining about something like this."

Kael pointed out, but Leon still looked unhappy.

"Hey, if this is such a big deal, then I can take the necromancer in. No one will be foolish enough to question my actions. I can send her over as my guest if you want to keep her."

Lyra quickly broke the tension as she inserted herself into the conversation. And honestly, Kael had forgotten all about her.

Her proposal was worth considering, but it had its own demerits. For example, would the demons accept Elena as one of their own? And Elena’s position would not be secure-

"You are overthinking this. Just leave it all up to me for now."

Kael decided to trust Lyra this time. She might be rash, but she was not foolish. If she was saying that she wanted to take in Elena, then she would likely do a good job.

...

Elena woke up around noon with a foggy mind. She could not recall what had happened, but she felt like she had been through a lot.

A part of her felt...like it was asleep, and it made her feel empty inside. Even her memories seemed to be missing.

’The last thing I remember is...those people and my doctor treating me. And then...what happened? Where am I? Where is everyone?’

Elena wanted answers, and the one who could give them to her arrived inside her room.

Kael opened the door and looked at her with a soft expression that made her feel warm and tingly.

"Are you awake now, Elena? How are you feeling?"

Kael asked, and Elena felt like something was stuck in her throat when she looked at him. A feeling of comfort washed over her that felt familiar.

Being with Kael felt safe, but not in the same way as being with her family. And still, a part of her wanted to call Kael by that nickname.

"I am feeling better...mother."

Kael’s expression was priceless. He rubbed his forehead, almost as if he were fighting off a terrible headache.

"Is there any way I can stop you from calling me that?"

Kael asked, and Elena shook her head.

Her feelings for Kael were not familial, and yet, adding this word made her feel as if she were close to him.

Kael looked at her like he wanted to protest, but then decided that there was no point in doing so and gave up.

"Fine. You can address me as mother if it makes you feel better. It’s not the worst..."

Kael looked like he wanted to curse, but he was still kind enough to agree to Elena’s wishes, which made her feel like everything would be fine.

"You should freshen up first and then come downstairs. I will brief you on what happened here."

Elena nodded and stood up on shaky legs. Her body felt weak, but her mind and heart felt steady.

She had a feeling she would be able to face anything right now.

When she came downstairs, unknown people were sitting around the table with grim expressions on their faces. They acknowledged her presence but did not look particularly happy to see her.

Kael patted the spot beside him, and Elena quietly went to sit next to him.

Cough

"Elena, do you know what happened to this village?"

Kael asked her, and Elena tried to remember. But she could not recall everything clearly.

Still, she had a feeling she knew what had happened.

"Don’t be too alarmed by what I am about to tell you..."

Kael told Elena that her village had gotten caught up in the fight between humans and demons and had perished. But Elena had a feeling that it was not true. She could subconsciously tell that she had played a role in all of this.

And because of this, the anger she was supposed to feel never came.

Kael looked at her with a nervous expression, waiting to see what she would do with this information. But Elena had no desire to do anything.

Instead, she turned to look at Kael with a questioning look in her eyes.

"So, what are you going to do with me?"

She finally asked, and Kael answered immediately.

"For now, we have decided that Lyra will take you in as her ward. Once you get settled and solidify your position, you can choose where you want to go."

Kael assured Elena, and she immediately grabbed his clothes and tugged on them.

"Then, can I choose to live with you in the future, mother?"

Elena’s question sounded innocent, but it caused everyone except Kael to burst into laughter.

He felt his face flush at Elena’s innocent question, and he nodded at her, ignoring the snickering happening in the background.

"If that is what you decide in the end, I won’t turn you away. But only if it is your wish."
