Chapter 125: Ch 124: Back to the Day I died
"This place is..."
Kael opened his eyes in a dark but familiar room. He was back in the modern world, and his clock showed him that it was time for him to get up.
It was likely an illusion caused by the corruption he swallowed. That, combined with the surging magic he took inside to seal Elena, had trapped him in this space. That made it hard for him to even use his magic.
But that did not mean Kael was going to waste away.
Sooner or later, he would find an opening in this magic and bring it down. But until then, he needed to carefully navigate this space and not let the magic detect anything unusual about him.
The first thing he needed to do was start his day. But his body felt lethargic, indicating that he had not slept enough.
Not that it was anything new for him at this point in his life.
"First, let’s figure out what time frame I am currently experiencing."
Kael looked at his phone to check the date. It was the most accurate source of information for him since he did not have a physical calendar or a clock.
XX/XX/XXXX
"This date...isn’t it the one when I died? Is this...my death date?"
Kael felt like his subconscious was playing a cruel joke on him. Did it want him to relive the pain of dying at his patient’s hands?

"Or maybe this is an opportunity to see what could happen if I avoid dying..."
Not that anything would change even if Kael survived here. But he could not help but question the ’what-if’ scenario he had been presented with.
He headed to work with this conflicting feeling. But once he actually saw his workplace, his mind began to clear and he came to a conclusion.
This time, Kael would save himself from his patient and not die at her hands.
Kael had more than one reason to come to this conclusion, but the most important one was the fact that he did not know what would happen to him if he died in this space. Would he repeat this day? Or would his spirit vanish?
More importantly, how could he break out of here?
"First, let’s go to work. I can think about everything else later."
And just like that, Kael decided what to do.
...
His workspace looked similar to how he recalled it, but the details started to blur if he tried to look too closely.
It did not surprise him to see some of the details changing before his eyes as he walked toward the front desk. After all, this place was made up of his memories. So if what he recalled changed, so did this space.
No one talked to him as he entered the small hospital. It was the usual affair for them.
But Kael decided to change the routine today. He walked up to the front desk and lightly knocked on the wooden counter so it would not collapse.

The lady on duty looked startled by his sudden behavior, and that made Kael even more certain that this was all in his head.
After all, the front desk lady had dealt with so much in her life that she had lost her ability to flinch. Instead, she had become a human smiling machine who usually repeated her lines to customers.
"Miss...Emma, is someone scheduled for me today? I am feeling a little under the weather, so I would like to take the day off."
Kael hardly interacted with the front desk lady, so he did not even know her name. But she had her name tag on, so it was easy for him to recall.
The front desk lady looked surprised to see Kael talking to her, and she even pointed at herself to make sure he was not mistaken.
When Kael showed no sign of leaving, she sighed and brought up his schedule to take a look.
"You are not booked for anyone today, so you can take the day off if you are feeling unwell. But this will reflect on your record. Are you sure you are alright with this?"
The lady asked, and Kael nodded.
After all, the alternative was to die at his patient’s hands, and Kael wanted to avoid that future.
"I have cleared you from the schedule. Just get me your ID card, and you can leave for today."
Kael nodded and immediately patted himself down for his ID. But he was not carrying it, and he did not take that thing home either.
That meant his ID was in his office...
The same office where he had lost his life.
"Emma, is there a guard around? Can you call one for me?"

He asked, and Emma gave him an annoyed look at having to do her "job." But she complied with his request, and this time, Kael headed toward his office with a guard behind him.
The door to his office was open, but it was to be expected.
After all, his patient and killer, Miss Sera, was already waiting for him inside.
"Huh? This is odd. I remember all the rooms being locked when I opened this place. How is this room already open? Doctor Kael, please step back. I will check inside for any intruders."
The guard opened the door slowly, and Kael’s eyes immediately went to Sera, who was sitting on the guest sofa.
"Doctor Kael, you are here-"
She started to speak, only to fall quiet as her eyes landed on the guard who had entered with him.
Confusion swam in her eyes as she looked between Kael and the guard. However, the guard took her presence much more seriously than Kael expected.
"Miss, what are you doing here before opening time? And how did you unlock this door? You do realize that this is breaking and entering, right? You can get sued for this."
The guard told Sera, but she did not look concerned about getting sued. What she was concerned about was Kael’s reaction.
He noticed Sera looking at him once in a while with pleading eyes. But Kael did not want to help her.
Kael knew the future that awaited him with Sera, so he decided the best thing to do would be to send her away and "advise" her never to come back here.
