Chapter 124: Ch 123: Facing Elena - Part 3

Elena was not a mindless fool. She liked to have a plan when she acted.

So the fact that she was standing still and allowing Leon to stab her sent alarm bells ringing through his mind, and he instantly changed the course of his strike.

Leon’s sword struck the ground beside Elena, and she made a disturbed face.

"What are you doing? You are supposed to stab me-"

Leon immediately struck one of her pressure points, causing Elena to go down. This not only blocked her magic but also rendered her unable to use spells. His aura was blocking her mana.

"Fuck! Finally-!"

Lyra complained as she panted. She had used a lot of power to stop Elena’s spell.

The space around them started to return to normal once the spell broke, but the places that Elena’s spell had affected remained black and lifeless.

"Now, tell us where Kael is and what you did to him. And don’t worry! You won’t die even if you don’t answer."

To most people, this would not have been a threat, but Elena’s expression shifted instantly.

Her blue eyes looked at Leon with defiance, but she gave up too quickly.

"What can you even do if I tell you where Kael is? You already broke my spell, rendering all I did until now useless. I...none of this was supposed to happen."

Elena’s voice was quiet, but it did not take long for tears to fill her eyes. Her body shook with tears she had not shed until now.

This situation...she had refused to believe it until now. Because if she did...

"Kael...he...none of this was supposed to happen..."

She had not properly faced the present. Honestly, she was not even sure she understood what was happening around her.

All she knew was that Kael was alive, he was breathing, and he had come for her. But he was no longer responding to her.

Leon looked annoyed by her lack of an answer, but the one who took action against her was Lyra.

The Demon Queen grabbed Elena by the collar and pulled her up.

"You-! Stop feeling sorry for yourself and get yourself under control. If you cannot handle the situation, then that is your problem. Now, hurry up and point us toward where Kael is."

Elena nodded at the harsh tone. Lyra’s anger was making her body act on autopilot. Her legs were moving, but she had no idea if she was moving or not. Even the voices of other people sounded like they were coming from far away.

It took some time for her to pull herself together, and she reminded herself that she was doing this for Kael.

Elena heard the Demon Queen asking about Seraphina and Iris and what they should do about them. But Leon’s only response was to let them remain where they were for being weak.

This response would have been unthinkable for him if he were still the same Hero she recalled. But he had changed a lot since the time they first met.

Not that it was important at the moment.

"Ugh, this village gives me the creeps. There is a strange smell around. What the heck is this?"

Lyra complained as she held her nose to stop the rancid smell from reaching her. It took her a few seconds to realize that the sharp odor irritating her belonged to the bodies of the dead buried around the village.

The smell had yet to fade, which was likely the effect of the necromancy arts that Elena had used.

"Don’t worry. You will get used to the smell..."

Elena assured them, and her confident voice was likely coming from her own experience.

"Ugh, sorry, but I don’t want to get used to this smell. I wouldn’t even be here if not for Kael. Not that I am here for him...I just don’t want this peace to break."

Lyra quickly corrected herself, but everyone knew what she was talking about.

Leon ignored them both as he headed toward the central house. He opened the door, only to block the incoming attack with his sword. He had fallen into a trap.

"You-!"

"I am not sorry. Who said you could take the lead in my territory? The reason I am tolerating you is because Kael needs help. Also, I have a feeling something is wrong with the spell we cast to come here. Someone has interfered with it..."

Leon already had a feeling something like this had happened. But as important as that matter was, Kael came first.

The final door opened, and they reached Kael...or at least his body. The man looked unresponsive and did not even open his eyes when he sensed new presences entering the room.

"Hmm, something is wrong here. Kael usually wakes up instantly once I walk into his room. Is he-"

Lyra tried to reach toward Kael, only to be thrown back by a barrier of magic. Corruption was mixed into that barrier, making it highly toxic for anyone to approach.

"Elena, what did you do? If you wanted to die, then you should have done that yourself. Why drag Kael into this as well?"

Leon questioned, and he was fully losing his temper. This, in turn, made Elena defensive.

"Don’t you think I tried? All I wanted was to die at Kael’s hands. He should not remember us, so he should not have any problem granting my wish. But he..."

There was no need to say any more. They all knew that Kael was a fool, and there was no changing that.

What did matter was what they were going to do now.

"Let’s wait for Seraphina to wake up first. She is the one who is most sensitive to mana and corruption. And if she fails...we might have to look for Selene Asterveil."

Everyone fell silent at that declaration. None of them wanted to involve Selene, and there was one main reason behind this.

It was because Selene had once killed Kael. It was something they had only heard secondhand from Selene after Kael’s official death. But the fact remained that it had happened once.

Who was to say that she would not do it again? After all, she was one of the two people who had said that they were participating in the spell for their own purposes and not for Kael.

"Elena, command the dead to bring Seraphina and Iris inside for now. We can discuss what we need to do once they are awake."
