Chapter 121: Ch 120: Gaining control over the Army

The battlefield felt like it was getting too chaotic. People were running around, trying to get ’one last push’ in before the other side could launch an attack. Tension was high on both sides when the guards on scouting duty on the human side noticed something weird.

"Are the demons...retreating? Just what are they planning this time? We better head back and report this."

The scouts quickly headed back, their senses sharp in an attempt to catch any trap they might be falling into.

But no one came after them, and they safely made it all the way back to the camp. They instantly made their way to their general’s tent to inform him of the sudden changes on the battlefield.

"General, we have news...!"

The tent opening fluttered, and the scouts were greeted by three unfamiliar presences, which made them halt.

It was awkward for the guards to continue speaking in front of these strangers, but their general waved his hand to give them the final push they needed.

"General, the demons have started to retreat. We assume that it’s some kind of trap. What should we do now?"

The fight was likely to get worse if the demons were retreating. Those scoundrels had no sense of shame and would do anything to gain an advantage. That was why crushing them was important.

Their general should know all this as well, so he should be telling them to follow the demons any second now.

But there was a pinched expression on their general’s face that did not sit well with the guards. Was there...something going on here?

"See, I told you, right? The demons will retreat soon because we reached a truce with their queen. She will be here to offer us a peace deal soon. So make sure no one steps out of line and causes the war to reignite."

The girl dressed entirely in white spoke in a soft yet authoritative voice.

Her words made the scout angry, but one look at the general told him that it wouldn’t be a good idea to snap at her.

"Saintess Seraphina, I understand where you are coming from. However, we cannot trust these demons. Who knows what they are planning? This might be a trap-"

"But even so, this is what I have decided. Are you going to go against the saintess’s words?"

"Of course not! Your will is our will. I will order everyone to stand down."

The general quickly understood the barely hidden meaning behind Seraphina’s words, and the guard noticed it as well.

Since the guard was not from the temple’s holy order, he did not take orders from the saintess. But even he revered and respected the Saintess enough to consider her words sacred. The real reason her words were scary, however, was because of the composition of their army.

Most of them belonged to the temple, and they would turn against other humans at a single word of disrespect toward their saintess.

In such a situation, there was no point in showing arrogance. The safest way to get through this was to follow the Saintess’s wishes and stop this fight.

"What do we do if the demons decide to break their side of the deal? We will suffer heavy consequences-"

"Don’t worry. Both Seraphina and I will accompany you along with Iris, and we will fight with you if things go wrong. That should be more than enough, right?"

The hero spoke up, which was more than enough to ease the rising tension. The general had no choice but to agree.

Both the demon and human representatives came forward to agree upon the truce. Lyra was dressed in heavy traditional garments, while Seraphina took the lead on the human side.

Everyone gathered there watched as the two approached each other before exchanging a handshake and signing a deal.

Those who tried to cause trouble were quickly caught, and that officially ended the war.

But the situation was far from over.

Now that one urgent matter had been taken care of, it was time to deal with the other one. And to do that, Iris’s role came into play.

Lyra, Seraphina, and Leon were too high-profile to go around asking questions. Iris, on the other hand, was someone whose information was being suppressed by the Noble Council.

Hardly anyone knew her name, much less what she looked like. So she was the perfect person to sneak around and gather more information.

She approached the soldiers eating their meals, and as expected, no one recognized her. But she soon ran into her first hurdle—socializing. She was not used to approaching people and making them talk, so she was not sure what she should do to get more information.

Iris sat down awkwardly at the campsite, wondering what her next move should be when someone else decided to approach her.

"Hey, are you new here? I don’t think I have seen you around."

The friendly soldier sat beside her and started to chat.

"If you are from the other division, then you were definitely lucky. We had to constantly fight during the war. And just when we thought we were doing well, that madman came. Well, I do understand Grand Master Kael’s position, but did he have to remain neutral? He’s human, right? He should have just helped us if he wanted to get rid of the corruption."

Iris nodded awkwardly, not wanting to interrupt the speaker.

She had a feeling she was going to find out what she needed from this blabbermouth.

"So anyway, that was the only time we joined hands with the demons. I don’t know the details, but I am sure our leaders activated some kind of anti-magic field and then attacked him. It must have worked because we never saw that man again. Hey! Does this mean we are awesome? We took down a Grand Master..."

The soldier giggled and almost sounded relieved. She even smacked Iris on the back to lighten the mood.

But that only served to make Iris angrier.

The soldier in front of her was happy and delighted to see Kael getting hurt, and all Iris wanted to do at that moment was destroy this camp and erase all the people here.
