Chapter 115: Ch 114: Gaining Freedom

In such a situation, Kael felt like he had to make a choice fast. The easiest one would be to do as Elena asked and end her life.

He should do it as well...the person in question wanted it, and the world magic wanted it.

Kael was even sure a part of him wanted it for all the suffering he had to endure.

But wanting to kill someone and actually going through with it were two different matters, and he was not ready for the second.

’I guess there is a reason it was said that doctors should not treat people they are close to. I hardly know Elena, but it’s still making me hesitate about what I need to do.’

The tense atmosphere was broken by a knock at the door. They got only a few seconds before the uncle entered the room, and Elena’s glowing eyes returned to normal.

She looked at the door with a scared expression, but her uncle did not notice and grabbed her arm.

"You! Get ready to go out and weed your keep. And this time, do not show your face back here until you are done."

Elena nodded and quickly followed her uncle out.

Kael followed at a more reluctant pace, but he was not sure what he should do.

As much as he wanted to save Elena, what was happening was because of her own will.

For now, he decided to stick by her side and help her out. The work she was assigned was cleaning, and Elena started doing that.

But her body was still lacking the necessary energy due to her constantly using her powers.

"Here, let me help you."

Kael did not allow Elena to even speak a word of objection before his magic swept through the area. Elena looked surprised, and her eyes sparkled as she looked at him.

"Wow! So magic can even do that? Can I learn some as well?"

She asked eagerly.

Elena was likely joking, but Kael gave the idea a second thought.

It...did not sound bad.

Learning control over her magic would allow Elena to control her outbursts better. It might even give her some will to live.

Moreover, Kael would finally get to experience her mana up close and form counters against it.

"I don’t see why you can’t learn. I can teach you if you would like me to. We also have time right now."

Kael offered, and Elena looked delighted.

"Then, I will take you up on your offer."

"Circulate your mana a little more gently. I know it’s hard, but once you get through the first roadblock, it should be easier to control."

Kael advised Elena, but she was having a lot of trouble.

Her body already knew how to use her magic, but her mind had not caught up. That made the mana flow through her body too fast for her to keep up with.

It also caused small outbursts that Kael instantly suppressed before Elena could notice.

"This is...really hard. Maybe using magic isn’t for me."

Elena complained as she started to give up. So Kael decided to encourage her a little more.

"You are doing far better than most people do at the start. Try a little bit more."

Kael told Elena, and she nodded and concentrated on her magic. It started to overwhelm her, and she began to lose herself. Kael immediately acted and broke her concentration.

Elena looked flushed but delighted at being able to use her magic, and Kael felt a little less burdened by her current state.

"Let’s head back now. We should-"

He felt a sudden surge of energy heading this village’s way. He had sensed that energy a lot, and he cursed as he realized he had forgotten something very important—

The war was still ongoing.

’Shit! Did that war reach the village? It would be bad if the corruption started to eat away at the village as well.’

The village was being continuously brought back to life by Elena’s magic. However, if the corruption were to reach this place, Elena’s magic would lose its effect.

And once it did, there was no telling what it would do to Elena.

"Elena, you stay here. I will check out what is happening. Just don’t come out of here, no matter what you hear, alright?"

Kael told her, and Elena looked confused, but she nodded.

"Alright, I will stay here."

She told him, and Kael immediately headed out.

The situation outside was bad. The fight had reached this village, and both humans and demons were swarming around the place. The barrier would not be able to keep them back for much longer.

"Darn it! Should I just blast them all?"

Kael asked in irritation. But it was not a solution that would make the situation better.

So he decided to fire off a warning shot, but that had the opposite effect.

Both forces turned toward the village, and Kael finally noticed something he had missed all this time—the army that was headed his way did not look normal. Their eyes were glazed over, and their steps were stiff.

They were corrupted.

And not only that...but they had also brought corruption with them.

"How irritating. Just how much corruption did you bring with you? I specifically told you fools to stay away."

Kael complained, but his heart felt lighter.

Once an entity was marked with corruption and had degraded to a state where it no longer had consciousness, it would be unwise to think of it as even alive.

He had no trouble aiming his magic at these zombies and taking them out.

Kael had still not recovered fully, but he could still utilize great magic. He immediately started calling upon his power, and it gathered around him.

A barrier appeared behind him, shielding the village from any further harm while he concentrated the rest of his power on the huge horde of corruption heading his way.

"I hope you all will not suffer in the afterlife. May your next lives be peaceful."

Kael chanted, and the mana that gathered around him started to turn holy and purifying. It was starting to burn his insides as his magic transformed into holy power, but it was the only way to get rid of the corruption.

White light filled the area, and it purified the wave. The forest that surrounded the army was obliterated in the process as well.

Kael descended from where he had been floating and looked at where the forest once stood with a detached expression.

Then he turned back toward the village and headed for Elena, only to see an outburst of magic pushing against his barrier.

"Darn it! What happened now?"
