Chapter 114: Ch 113: I remember everything

Kael ate his portion of the soup and then plated some for Elena to eat as well. It was soft food, so her stomach would not protest after suddenly tasting some flavor.

The blue-haired necromancer was still asleep by the time Kael came back, and he kept looking at Elena with a sorry expression on his face.

’I feel like a creep while watching her sleep. But I need to make sure to keep an eye on her and feed her something as soon as she wakes up. This is all medical practice...’

It was not, and Kael knew that. But he justified his actions with such thoughts.

Finally, Elena woke up an hour later, and she looked exhausted.

Her eyes were hollow, her face was pale, and she had no energy. She showed all the signs of being sick without actually being sick.

"You look exhausted and hungry. Here, I made some soup for you to eat."

Kael handed her the bowl, and Elena looked like she could not even recognize who he was, much less what he was talking about.

Her hand lingered around the bowl and the spoon, but she did not lift either to take a single bite.

Kael sighed as he looked at her before deciding that he needed to do something about her. So he grabbed the bowl from her hands and decided to feed her himself. It startled Elena, and she allowed Kael to feed her.

It was easy to make Elena swallow after she took the first bite. Her hunger returned, and she devoured the rest of the soup.

Kael handed her the bowl, and Elena did not waste even a drop of the soup.

She still looked hungry once the bowl was empty, but she no longer looked like she wanted to die, which was a plus.

"Are you feeling more awake now?"

Kael asked, and Elena’s face instantly flushed once she realized what she had done and how she had behaved.

She hid her face behind her hands and hair, not wanting Kael to see her red face.

"I-I am sorry. Did I sleep for too long? I have a lot to do at the moment, and yet I still remained asleep. I-"

Tears fell from Elena’s eyes, and even she did not seem to have noticed them yet. Her body was shaking due to overwhelming emotions that she was not able to control.

"Huh! How weird. Why am I crying? I..."

Elena’s body was shaking, and she seemed to have no idea why. Her eyes showed none of the emotions she had displayed the day before.

The only logical explanation was that she had lost her memory.

’No way! Did Elena exchange her memories in return for using her power on the village? Then all these people...Wait! Were they even alive when I first landed here?’

Kael felt like he had unlocked the answer to a difficult question. But it opened even more questions for him to ask.

But if that was the case...then why did the villagers treat Elena so poorly? Shouldn’t they treat her better? The people who are brought back to life are connected to the will of the necromancer. They all should be treating her like their god-

"Have you figured things out yet? I don’t recall you being so dull before. Did coming back make you lose brain cells?"

Elena’s voice suddenly sounded sharp, and Kael immediately looked at her, only to see her eyes glowing.

She was currently being possessed by the entity Kael had talked to before.

It made him feel on edge, but he did not snap at the entity to go back either.

Silence followed between the duo, and Elena broke it first.

"You must have noticed what is going on here, right? Everyone in this village died a long time ago when Elena first awakened. Abandoned by her parents, she was taken in by a shaman. But the shaman wanted to use Elena to conduct experiments."

"The child wandered the village, following the will of its master until she broke. And then began the last experiment for the child—to see how long that child would last once she started losing what was important to her over and over again."

"Have you noticed the barrier around the village? It’s there to keep me inside. The second I leave, this place collapses because it loses my power. And when I come back, the shock and memories make me lose my mind. It’s a never-ending cycle for me."

Elena did not even sound angry or tired when she spoke. She spoke as if she had gotten used to this situation.

But Kael knew that there was only so much a human mind could handle before it was no longer able to endure it.

’No wonder Elena is so fucked up. Anyone would be after going through what she has.’

Still, she had options available to her.

"You have the option to leave and never come back here. All you have to do is take a step."

Elena let out a startled laugh.

"That’s a nice thought and something only a detached person like you can say. However, if I could leave, I would have. Don’t you think so as well? There are chains called memories and guilt binding me to this place."

Elena confessed, and it suddenly made sense why the village was the way it was.

Usually, there was no way someone brought back to life by a necromancer would ever harm them. These bodies did not even have wills of their own.

So if they were still treating Elena badly, then...

’Is this because of Elena herself? Is she...unconsciously causing them to attack her so that she can feel less guilty about what happened?’

Kael almost flinched at his own thoughts. They were ugly, and he hoped he was wrong.

But looking at the situation, he had a feeling he was not. Elena was purposely making herself be treated badly because that was her way of atoning for her sins.

"Hmm, it seems like you are finally getting how messed up I am. See, there is no point in saving me anymore. So just take me out of my misery now. My dear friend, please set me free."

Elena opened her arms and begged Kael. She was asking him to make a decision again.
