Chapter 113: Ch 112: New Variable

Kael tried to step toward Elena, but something grabbed onto his legs and forced him to stay in place.

He looked down, only to see a bony hand grabbing hold of his legs and preventing him from reaching Elena.

[Warning: Variable is unstable. Make preparations to eliminate the threat.]

The ancient magic was starting to work, and if Kael did not do something, then Elena would be eliminated.

So he decided to fight her magic using his own.

Magic was a force that could be amplified by one’s emotions. But there was a huge risk of the user being overwhelmed by their emotions and magic, making them unable to recover.

Currently, Elena was fast approaching that state herself.

Her magic was cutting and sharp, threatening to swallow everything it came into contact with. It was even trying to swallow Kael’s magic.

Luckily for Kael, he knew how to deal with such a situation, and it was all thanks to the war he had died in.

There had been so many attacks from corrupted soldiers. And the corruption’s sole purpose was to swallow everything.

It was safe to say that Kael had gotten used to fighting against such power.

He forced a barrier around himself and approached Elena. Her magic got stronger the closer he got to her, and Kael grabbed her shoulder with a pinched expression.

"Elena, can you hear me? If you can, then take a deep breath and try calming yourself down. I know you want to let your grief out, but you will hurt the remains of the villagers if you rage like this."

Kael reminded Elena, and she looked at him with a detached expression.

Somehow, he had a feeling she was not even here at the moment and that he was talking to a puppet.

"What’s even the use? They’re all dead! I-I remember how this happened! It’s all my fault. Because I trusted someone and then lost control of my powers! Their deaths are on my hands...No, I can still save them. They are not dead. Their souls are still here."

Elena muttered, having no intention of listening to what Kael had to say. In fact, her mental state looked even worse than Kael had thought before.

The way her body was shaking...

’Is Elena having a seizure? I need to calm her down.’

Kael used his magic to conjure a blanket and throw it over Elena’s head.

"S-Stop! What are you doing! Let me go-!"

She struggled, but Kael stubbornly kept the blanket over her head, and he even wrapped his arms around her.

"Everything will be fine, Elena. Just take a deep breath and calm your nerves. I am sure everything will pass. There is no longer any need for you to shoulder the burden of what happened here by yourself."

Kael told Elena, and her breath hitched. Then she started crying.

Elena cried so hard that the blanket over her head became wet. But neither Elena nor Kael pointed it out. They stayed like that until Kael felt Elena calm down and fall asleep in his arms.

He decided to take her back to her house and put her to bed. Being somewhere familiar would help her sort herself out.

Sleep also threatened Kael, and he decided to take a nap. This day felt like it had been going on forever.

Kael closed his eyes, intending to sleep. But when he opened them next, it was not of his own volition. It was because someone else wanted to assert their authority in front of him.

...

"Tsk, how long are you going to keep sleeping? Do you think you are a guest here just because that bastard girl brought you back? Learn your place."

A sharp voice snapped Kael out of his daze, and he blinked while looking at a familiar face.

It was Elena’s uncle, the one who had been rude to her ever since Kael came here.

Not only was he alive and standing in front of Kael, but his temper seemed to be the same.

Kael tried to wrap his mind around what had happened. As far as he knew, the uncle should have been dead, along with the rest of the village.

But here he was, fine and not even looking winded after what he had been through.

A picture of what was happening was beginning to form in Kael’s mind, but he was not sure if he disliked it or felt annoyed by the situation.

The uncle ignored his look of confusion and instead went over to Elena to kick her out of bed.

"Hey brat! It’s time for you to get up and do your job. Breakfast won’t prepare itself-"

The uncle kicked Elena’s bed. He would have kicked Elena as well, but Kael managed to stop him in time.

"Elena is sick right now. How about we let her sleep while I cook something for you to eat?"

Kael offered, and the uncle looked offended that he was going to let the younger man serve him. But then the uncle quickly changed his mind.

"Hmph! It is not every day that a young master offers to cook for you. I can brag about this to everyone soon."

The uncle muttered under his breath before he allowed Kael to follow him to the kitchen.

Kael took one last look at Elena’s tired body behind him and decided to make a decision. It was time for him to cook some food.

Except...there was nothing in the kitchen to cook with except rotten ingredients. But it made sense why nothing would grow in this village.

Kael decided to take some things out of his magical storage unit that he kept for emergencies, and he began to cook.

He cooked a relatively simple meal since he knew his stomach was going to need something light after what had happened.

Kael plated the food and gave it to the uncle. But he kept feeling like it was a waste of his time and ingredients.

"What’s this?"

The uncle asked while looking at the normal-looking soup. Kael had a feeling it was the uncle’s first time tasting soup made with actual ingredients.

The elder took one sip before devouring the soup. It was finished within seconds.

"Hmm, you are a good cook. Perhaps I can overlook your presence. In return, cook for me every now and then."

The uncle declared, and Kael did not say anything to him. But he was annoyed by the uncle’s audacity on the inside.

’This man...let’s forget it. I need to focus on Elena for now.’
