Chapter 112: Ch 111: What happened to the Village?

The request came back, even more insistent this time. Kael could not even pretend he did not hear what Elena asked of him this time.

But hearing her out and granting her wish were two separate things.

"I don’t want your blood on my hands. Didn’t you say we were friends? And you are still asking me to take your life?"

Kael asked, wanting to hear what Elena had to say. But instead of answering him, she burst out laughing.

Her eyes shone as she calmed down, and Kael suddenly felt pinned under her gaze.

"That’s true. I called you my friend, but you never considered me one, right? Look, you are conflicted about how to answer my question even more. Would a ’friend’ have so much trouble?"

Elena was right. For Kael, she had been the closest thing to a friend because of their similar natures. But he had never gotten close enough to her.

The necromancer noticed his expression, but instead of pointing it out, she continued to speak.

"We might be strangers to you, but for me, you were my closest friend. And that’s why I wanted you to grant me peace."

Elena spoke softly, and Kael felt even more unsettled.

"In exchange, I can answer any question you would like to ask me. It’s a tempting offer, right?"

Kael took a deep breath to detach himself from the situation. The world magic was a huge help to him in this matter.

’It seems like Elena has a multiple personality disorder as well as suicidal tendencies. This all could be a side effect of her magic since it is connected to death. Her unstable nature does pose a threat to the current situation, but the knowledge she carries likely exceeds my own. Thus, keeping her alive might be beneficial...’

"Hey, if you won’t do it, then allow me. Or maybe we can both do it and be together-"

Those words instantly reminded Kael of how he died during his second life. He had no intention of dying like that again.

Especially at the hands of someone who showed clear signs of a mental disorder.

"Let’s stop talking about death and killing. I am sure we can find another way to stabilize you-"

"I had a feeling you would say that. After all, you are far too kind. However, you will regret not making a decision soon. And when you do, call for me. I will end it all."

Elena’s touch felt gentle, and her hands brushed past Kael’s face.

One second she was standing in front of him, and the next, her body collapsed.

Kael immediately grabbed her and prevented her head from colliding with the ground. Seeing her peaceful expression made Kael feel a little burdened.

[Effect of the ’Special Condition’ will expire now. Your backlogged emotions will be returned to you.]

Kael did not feel ready, but the world’s magic cared nothing for his well-being.

All of the things he had been suppressing slammed into him at once, making Kael shake.

"Darn it! Even if I know that there is no need for me to fear Elena’s magic, I still feel terrified. This must be the result of my trauma from dying. Darn it!"

Elena had been behaving too much like his patient used to before she killed him. He would not even be surprised to find out that the patient who killed him had somehow been influenced by Elena.

If there was someone crazy enough to find a way to do that, it would surely be this necromancer with the strongest bond to death.

"Let’s hope I am able to cure her mentality before it is too late."

Kael sighed before he felt sleep tugging at his eyelids. He finally closed his eyes and fell asleep.

...

Kael woke up alone the next morning, and Elena was nowhere to be seen.

He took in a sharp breath as panic began to settle in his mind. However, the door opened the next second, and Elena entered looking unbothered.

That made the fear gripping Kael melt away, and his body relaxed.

"Are you feeling alright?"

He asked Elena, and she looked confused for a few seconds before she flashed him a smile.

"I am fine now. I feel like I troubled you last night, but I cannot remember what I said or did. But don’t let it bother you. This happens far too often. The villagers even smack me sometimes to wake me up."

Elena sounded cheerful, and it was hard to connect her with the same madwoman he had met last night.

However, he was not naive enough to believe that Elena was actually alright. Her current happiness was likely a mask she wore to hide her pain.

If Kael could find the root cause of her sadness, then he could help her out. But first, he needed to get her out of the village.

"Elena, do you want to go to the river with me? I feel like a small walk will do me good."

Kael asked her, and Elena looked troubled.

"Go...on a walk? I don’t think I should..."

The desire to get away from the village was there in Elena, but something was holding her back. Her attachment to the village was a problem for her, and Kael slowly offered to help her break those chains.

"It will be fine. If your uncle gets mad, then I will pay for your company. A little exercise will do us both some good."

Kael pointed out, and his arguments became more and more compelling.

"I...alright...it should be fine..."

Elena still looked troubled, but she agreed to go out with Kael.

However, she still looked worried. Her eyes kept looking back at the village even while she was with Kael.

"Is something troubling you, Elena? There is no reason for you to hold back your words. I am here to listen to you."

Kael reassured Elena, and she decided to confide in him.

"I don’t know why, but I keep having this strange feeling that I should not leave the village...Can we head back now?"

She asked, and Kael decided they had been outside long enough. Elena would not make any more progress if she was so worried about the village.

"Alright, let’s head back."

They headed back to the village, but when they reached it, they did not see a settlement. Rather, what awaited them were the remains of a village with corpses everywhere.

Kael felt stunned, not knowing what had happened. And Elena?

She let out a loud scream as she rushed toward the village. Kael followed her and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Elena-"

"N-No! Not this! I didn’t-! It’s not my fault! Please, you have to believe me-!"

She was begging someone, but Kael had a feeling it was not him.

Her power was also getting out of hand, sapping life from the plants and even the earth. Kael needed to stop her before she ended up destroying too much.

"Elena, stop-!"

He yelled, but she was not hearing him. In the end, he had no choice but to knock her out using his magic. And thankfully, it worked because he had no other backup plan.
