Chapter 110: Ch 109: Elena

Tension faded from Elena’s frame as soon as her uncle was gone. She looked embarrassed but also satisfied to see that nothing had happened because of her uncle.

"P-Please don’t mind my uncle too much. He’s a good person at heart. He just...has a complicated past."

Elena tried to defend her uncle, and she was also showing signs of extremely low self-esteem.

Her condition was much like Seraphina’s but also somewhat...different.

Kael felt sorry for her, but he was not sure if he wanted to help her. After all, Elena was still home, and she showed a desire to remain there. Besides, as far as he recalled, her leaving her village was the catalyst for a lot of trouble in her life.

’I do think it would be for the best if she remained here. No matter how bad her life is, it would still be better than having the world be destroyed at her hand.’

It made Kael feel like a bastard, but he needed to make a rational decision here.

’Hey, are you telling me to kill Elena if she’s not mentally stable? I know she’s a threat, but surely she’s not that far gone? She can still be saved...’

There was no answer to his question, which did not surprise him.

That ancient spell was only a guide, not something there to provide him with all the answers. He could not even access the information about his targets whenever he needed to.

Sigh

’Let’s focus on the task at hand. First, I should focus on making sure Elena is healthy.’

Kael had a lot of money, and his magic had recovered enough to the point where he could walk around if he forced himself.

So he forced himself to stand and turned to look at Elena’s confused expression.

"Hey, I still feel hungry. I am craving something nice. Shall we take a look outside to see what is available? Don’t worry about the money. I have some, so I can pay."

Kael promised Elena, and she slowly grabbed his hand. But the suspicious look on her face did not go away.

He was about to ask her what she was looking at when she decided to answer him.

"You can move normally now? But you were not even able to move a few seconds ago..."

"A-Ah, that? Don’t worry about it. That was just a momentary dizzy spell! As you can see, I am completely fine now..."

Kael showed Elena that he was serious by walking around a little, but she still looked hesitant to believe him.

However, her desire to eat something nice won in the end because she nodded and followed him out.

...

’Darn it! Does this village have no food? How can every store turn us away? No, more importantly...why are all the crops here rotting? Can people even survive on this stuff?’

Kael prided himself on being frugal and not spending his money on luxuries and the best things.

He had also eaten desperate meals during his time as a student, so he could say that he was well acquainted with the taste of mediocrity and frugality.

However, being in this village was a different kind of hell he had never seen before.

But the worst part was not even the rotting vegetables and other food. It was the fact that everyone seemed to think that it was normal and went about their day.

Even Elena did not raise any concerns. She just looked wide-eyed at the ’food’ that was being sold.

"Hey, is the food always like this around the village?"

Kael asked, and Elena looked at him with a wonder-filled expression on her face.

"T-The food? I think it looks better today than anything I have seen until now. You must be a really lucky person."

Elena did not seem to be lying. But Kael had a hard time believing her words.

The food in front of her was not even comparable to prison food.

"I suddenly no longer feel hungry. I am also feeling tired. Should we head back inside and rest?"

Kael asked Elena, and she looked disappointed but nodded anyway.

As bad as it made Kael feel, he could not feed Elena such horrible food and still feel good about himself.

’I promise I will feed you nice stuff once we get out of here...I should start trying to convince Elena that we need to leave today.’

Kael formed a plan in his mind as he followed Elena back to her room.

He instantly felt the creepy sensation of being watched. And that weird, tense magic around this village was still present.

However, it was becoming easier and easier for him to adapt.

’This is bad. I need to get out of here, and fast.’

...

"Please go to sleep on the bed. I will sleep on the floor. Having an injured person sleeping on the floor won’t sit well with me."

Elena pointed out with a stubborn look on her face as she refused to take the bed. Kael felt irritated and almost suggested they share before he realized that it would be a bad idea.

The girl did not give him a chance to even speak before she sat down on the floor and made herself comfortable.

"Good night. I promise I will find good food for you tomorrow. Please keep hanging on until then."

Elena told Kael, but he doubted she would be able to keep her promise. After all, to give someone good food, you needed to know what good food was first.

But Elena looked desperate, so Kael did not stop her. Instead, he pretended to close his eyes and observe her a little more.

He was sure she would lower her guard once she was convinced that he was asleep.

A few minutes passed, and Kael relaxed. And then, he heard a choking noise that made him open his eyes.

’What the hell-! Is there an attack? I did not sense anyone-’

There was no one in the room besides himself and Elena, and the source of that choking noise was Elena as well.

More specifically, she was choking herself, and her face looked red and dazed. Something was clearly wrong with her, and Kael immediately jumped to help her.
