Chapter 109: Ch 108: Saved by Someone

Kael...was alive. And pain was the first sensation he felt across his body.

It hurt to even move, but he knew he needed to open his eyes if he wanted to know what the situation was like.

The first thing he noticed about his surroundings was that he was inside a house that was barely holding together. The roof looked like it could cave in at any second, and the floor was dirty, with the walls chipping and also having holes in them.

The second thing he noticed was that he was covered by a dirty rag that did not look safe to touch.

And the third thing he noticed was that his magic felt disturbed.

Kael could still cast spells, but whatever magic had been used to block him was powerful enough to almost knock him out.

"Darn it! I am certain that it was not a normal spell. Something that complicated could only be made by another Grand Master or someone of similar skill."

If that was the case, then it would be almost impossible to track down who the original owner of that spell was.

"For now, I need to find out where I am and what I am going to do from here on out."

Kael tried to drag himself out of the bed, but it was a hard thing to do in his current condition.

He was already not the fittest person, and this just made the situation worse.

Before Kael could wallow in more self-pity, the door that was barely hanging on opened, and Elena Noctis’s familiar face entered the room.

She looked young and far too fragile. It was a direct contrast to the strong and silent woman he recalled her growing up to be.

The current Elena was shy, and she avoided looking him in the eyes. More than that, he noticed how thin and fragile she looked.

"Y-You are awake? Would you like to eat something? I-I brought you food-!"

Elena’s hand trembled as she brought the small bowl toward Kael. The bowl hardly had anything inside it, and the murky contents looked unsafe to drink. But Kael was hungry enough to eat anything.

He took the bowl and almost threw up at the first taste.

’Is this even edible? I feel like I will get food poisoning if I eat this.’

But Elena was looking at him with a desperate expression on her face, which made Kael put the bowl aside and question her to distract her.

"Where am I? How did I get here? Did you save me?"

Kael recalled seeing Elena when he had first passed out. But he was not sure if it had been his imagination or not.

Elena shook her head to indicate that she was not the one who helped him.

"T-The villagers helped you and brought you back. Y-You should thank them and not me."

Elena told Kael, but her voice sounded terrified.

Kael had only once heard Elena talking about her villagers before, and that had been when she had drunk herself into oblivion. She had talked about them fondly and called it the ’only’ good time she had before meeting Leon and Kael.

But looking at her now...it did not look like she was having a good time.

"I see. Then, can I meet the village head? I can thank him and offer him a reward-"

The sound of a door being slammed against the wall reached Kael’s ears, and his sensitive hearing picked up the sound of heavy footsteps heading their way.

Elena must have heard those footsteps as well because she flinched as she looked outside the door with a desperate expression on her face.

"S-Sir must be back! I should go and greet him-!"

Elena tried to sound happy, but terror crept into her voice. It made Kael want to keep her with him. So he immediately grabbed his side and pretended he was hurting.

"Ouch! It hurts...I don’t think I can get back to bed. Can you help me?"

Kael asked, and Elena nodded as she tried to bear his body weight.

But she was too thin and weak to do that. Normally, she would not have been able to get Kael to bed on her own, but he decided to help her out.

He was not injured enough to need help in the first place, but his instincts were telling him to keep Elena with him for now.

Elena looked proud to be able to help him out. Her eyes shone with pride as she looked at him with a triumphant smile on her face.

"L-Let me know if you need anything else. I will do-"

"What will you do, you bastard! Do you have any idea how much trouble you caused me because you decided to save this stranger? Food and clothing are not free, you know. And now you want me to feed another mouth?"

A stranger came inside and grabbed Elena’s hair a little too fast for Kael’s liking.

He did not even get a chance to do anything until he heard Elena’s cry of pain.

"U-Uncle, forgive me. I-I did a good deed-"

"Good deed, my foot. You just increased the number of mouths I have to feed. Food and clothing for this man will come out of your rations. Do you understand?"

The man Elena called uncle shook her roughly, and Kael finally realized that he was not watching some family drama but a real fight. It made him act instantly, and he broke the two apart by pulling Elena toward him.

Her uncle looked pissed at Kael’s actions, but then he noticed the high-quality robe Kael had on his body, and his body language changed.

"You...you are not a commoner, right? That robe of yours is rather high quality...I hope you will pay up the appropriate amount for saving your life."

Kael almost told the uncle that he was not going to pay a single dime when he stopped himself. Elena was shaking, but she still had an affectionate smile on her face when she looked at her uncle.

It was the only thing that stopped Kael from attacking him.

Also, he had a feeling that something was wrong. He had not noticed it before, but there was a strange static in the air that made him feel agitated.

It was almost as if this place was being affected by large-scale magic.

"I-I am sure he will repay us, uncle. But before he can, we need to t-treat him right!"

Elena came to Kael’s rescue by stressing those words, and her uncle gave her a look before walking away.
